I ordered some from y'all and grew them for the first time last year here in Las Cruces, NM. They did very well, although I just grew them for seed. The other day, clearing out the bed, I found some I missed and covered them. I did wonder if they would "perennialize" there. We shall see! It was fun growing them, just for historical interest. I also grew some of your Hopi Blue Corn.
These beans are typically dry farmed and therefore planted after the first soaking rain of the summer monsoon season in early July. They can be planted as late as the first week of August in the low desert. In low desert areas of Arizona where irrigation is available, it is possible to plant two crops - one in the dry spring in March and again with the monsoons.
Very helpful tips! Thank you.
👌 it is good wow wow Ethiopia
Are these grown in native arid desert soil? I live in Tucson, wondering if I should layer some mulch and water before planting to loosen up soil.
yes they are, but adding mulch to the surface of your beds is never a bad idea after planting. Just leave a small opening for the seed to sprout.
Are there any other types of beans that grow well dry farmed in the desert? I'm not super stoked about having to cook tepary beans for hours.
Last year was very dry, but my seeds that I purchased from Native Seeds Search did produce enough, that I have about 200 seeds/plants this summer.
Can you eat the young green pods?
Do these benefit from inoculation like other legumes?
Great 👍

Do they grow year round in the desert?
