Another common Chinese mistranslation of a US weapon is the Standard missile (SM-2, 3, 6, etc.) family--it actually means a "military flag," NOT "standard" as in a norm or measure of quality. I've almost never heard a Chinese-language channel get this translation right. It's spelled the same, but has different meanings. While the F16XL (one of my favorite planes) also has a similar wing design, it never entered service and came decades later. A closer comparison both in terms of generation and looks is the Saab 35 Draken, which is a rough contemporary of the F4D Skyray. They both have the side intakes, whereas the F16XL has the below the nose intake. The Draken was actually the first fighter to invent the now famous "cobra" maneuver that Soviet/Russian pilots like to show off of in air shows (not much use in air combat these days, probably) in their Flanker series fighters.
