So last October I came to Seoul for the first time in my life. I’m travelling on the subway and imagine who gets on the train? Jerry. And sits right in front of me with a tripod in his hands 😅 I couldn’t believe my eyes and could hardly keep from laughing at the chance of this happening 😊

Thank you for this video. As a Nigerian who recently came to Korea on a scholarship, I was always curious about his story. It's really motivating.
Jerry feels like a really nice and chill person. I think it's really interesting his point about coming from multiracial vs monoracial countries and I didn't think about it before too. Many people from multiracial countries have some hang-ups or things they notice when they come to Korea that feels harder to accept or get used to. There is some level of subconscious overthinking. For him, it is just normal and understandable :) appreciate that perspective!
I don't think foreigners that come to Korea are subconsciously overthinking anything. Most people have boundaries. Some Koreans are more likely to violate those boundaries with foreigners than they would with their own people. For example, I have heard countless stories of Koreans randomly going up to people to touch their hair and skin. Without even asking for permission to touch someone they don't know. They just do it! There is no overthinking involved on the foreigner's end. That is just weird behavior.

It was really interesting to learn about Jerry's journey in South Korea.
I'd like to point out a possible mistake in the english translation, though.
Nigeria is a multicultural country with 300+ ethnic groups, each having distinct languages, cultures, and history.
Perhaps Jerry meant to highlight a similarity between both countries by mentioning the singularity of their racial groups.
Although Nigeria is a home to predominantly black people, it is not a homogeneous country.
Right? Struck me as odd as well. Maybe the specific area he grew up was very homogeneous?

What I appreciate most about this interview is how it counters the often negative perspectives shared by many foreigners living in Korea. Despite their complaints, these individuals continue to reside in South Korea without plans to leave anytime soon. It's natural that everyone's experience differs, but the amount of negativity has been excessive, especially when actions don't match words. I love how Jerry highlighted the positive aspects of living in Korea, which can help balance or even overshadow the negatives. Thank you both for such an interesting interview!!

This was a great interview. I am just now learning Korean. I’ve watched Kdramas and listened to the music for over ten years but just didn’t think it was realistic to try to learn. This year something sparked in me to try. My current issue is I feel like I often only hear the endings of words 😭.

Loved this interview! I enjoy KExplorer content and I was eager to know about how he learned Korean!
I'd like to see some interviews with people who learned Korean but weren't able to move to Korea because they don't have the funds or ability too. Don't get me wrong it's great to see such success but not all of us have the degrees or funds at the moment to just move to Korea to make it easier to learn.

The fact that he still don't speak Korean 100% even though he been there for a while for some reason relief me, i was studying korean for one year and a half and im stuck in B1 level, he undirectely make me feel like its ok to not know everything but you have to keep trying

Being able to understand the "gist" of what someone is saying even if you don't hear/understand every word shows a high level I think. I don't think I've understood what someone was saying or the gist of what I was reading to where I could guess the meaning of words I didn't know in Korean yet. But in other easier languages I can do it. It's definitely easier said than done.

I don't think it matters what kind of country you come from, monocultural or multicultural. I think it matters how you think, how well you can empathise with other people, how well you can learn to understand other people as a priority to your own thoughts and feelings. I come from a very multicultural country, Australia. I grew up in country Australia and I live in country Korea. And there's good reason to believe that country Korea is much more difficult to fit into than city Korea - like country people in Australia, country people in Korea are more suspicious, more wary. Whereas cities are full of different types of people, so that it's almost guaranteed that there are people you fit in more with. Country people are more difficult. They see fewer people and fewer types of people - Australia too. And I had no problem whatsoever fitting into Korea. In fact I've been told more than once that I seem to have an natural adaptation to Korea. It's attitude and how well you accept difference. When I came here, I didn't really see culture shock at all. Honestly, the things that most surprised me were how much similarity there was in so many ways. Korean people are just people, like in every other country. They have feelings and points of view and similarities and uniquenesses, just like everyone else. It's not what kind of country you come from. It's your attitude to seeing new things and new people that underpins how well you fit in in Korea, and I suspect, any other country.
I might add that I really like K Explorer. 🙂
