Basically, a process opens itself, turning into two, which opens themselves, which turns into four... yadda yadda yadda... until system crash, or you somehow stop it. While the Rabi-Ribi one isn't technically a straight-up Fork Bomb, it's sort of the second closest thing; it opens "programs" (technically speaking, a tab on Chrome or other Chromium based web browsers shows up as a program under Chrome's tree in Task Manager, along with its extensions) until the browser (or your computer) crashes, hogging a whole lotta resources in the process. I'm sure the developers had no ill intention making it, but a virus is a virus is a virus, and one bug or glitch could turn an anti-piracy measure into a thing that activates for everyone, even legit buyers.

No malice, no mean intent, no threats, not even just a simple crash or message saying "ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!" Just a message from a guy who understands why people pirate games, and simply says "hey, I totally get it. I used to be that guy too. But I still can't let you play the full game. If you want, play the demo, and I even have some links to take you to places where you can learn about game development and how to get started on a career in making games!" Best part is those links he provides are legit and clean
My take would be trashing the quality with intentional random crashes(1/256 each frame) and other more subtle measures if the copy can’t be fully validated as legit.

frankly im not surprised by how broken manhunt is given how poorly the steam version of bully scholarship edition runs. i think one time i tried to look up fixes for how often the game crashed and the best one i could find had replies that said "thanks man, this one kept it from crashing for at least four hours!"

Rockstar also uses cracked/pirated copies of their game Midnight Club 2 on steam. If I remember right, some people cracked it on whatever it was on before steam, then Rockstar then used those game files and not original files on steam. The biggest tell tale this was the case is the hackers left their group signature in the game files of their cracked copy, which was in the Steam copy.
Since Rockstar owns the copyright on the game, and thus the derivative work of the crack, this isn't actually illegal at all. Another example is gog version of prince of persia the two thrones, which uses a reloaded crack to remove the star force. ubisoft also ended up using a scene crack to fix their broken game.
The devs get paid a wage, and if the rich weren't hogging up all the industry resources and media they'd just make indie games, so piracy was only ever theft against the rich, and all rich people are lazy and criminally minded so its ok.
So about gorebox. There is many things talked about the creature seen in the anti piracy thing. All known from it is that its name is "The Observer" which has the face of the photoshopped doll from an image called "Gurgles and Bugman". More info about him is on their Wikipedia

Okay the story involving Manhunt's piracy being found out from an OFFICIAL copy of the game instead of something related to actual piracy is both hilarious and frustrating
Making players with illegitimate copies encounter fake bugs as an anti-piracy method is pretty counterproductive. I can't imagine someone being like "Oh boy, I surely would like to buy this game that barely functions." The bunny game one is really good, it's pretty funny and gives you enough time to realize you fucked up before nuking your PC lol.

I heard that Ace Attorney Investigations 2 had an interesting anti-piracy measure: the game will change the language to a fictional in-game language (Borginian) but a fan patch fixed it long time ago. You can watch short by TheCapcomHistorian about it I also remember when I was a kid, I downloaded a pirated version of Mirror’s Edge and couldnt complete it, because on one of the levels anti-piracy protection slowed down the character, preventing her from jumping high enough to pass
the ads are only on mobile, since the mobile version is free while the pc version is 4.99 so it doesnt have ads. and you can still play singleplayer with a pirated copy, it will only do the jumpscare if you go into multiplayer
I'll have to tell about the Gorebox's "Anti-Piracy" Let me explain: in a Update in 2023 they put this thing that you will get jumpscared by that guy covered in blood with human eyes and a scary smile while on the full screen it says "What Are You Doing?". The real thing because they added it, it's because they wanted to evitate Hackers, This thing was added to stop Hackers and Exploiters in Multiplayer servers of breaking and cheating, when that screen appears, the Exploiter Gets permanently banned from multiplayer. That's all.
A bit of misinfo regarding Rabi-Ribi. The anti-piracy doesn't trigger as soon as the DLC is, it's triggered upon reaching Chapter 1 (the game starts in Chapter 0). The developer has also admitted to the "every frame" behavior being a bug that they don't know the cause of. Stuff surrounding this game is very poorly documented and is only found in niche discord servers.
6:00 The same thing happened for the Steam version of Max Payne which needs a truckload of patches to play the game because it crashes without them. It's so stupid that these broken ports that have not been supported by Rockstar in years are still being sold on Steam.
Max Payne was originally developed for Windows 98/XP, and the console versions are compromised ports. The game just has compatibility issues with modern versions of Windows.

If I'm not mistaken on the Manhunt anti-piracy measures, they kick in on the Steam version because Rockstar used a pirated version that bypassed the anti-piracy checks in game. But Rockstar removed the pirates' initials from the code which broke the work the pirates did and the game now detects the pirated game again. Did rockstar even test that? if they tested even just 15 mins in it would be blantantly obvious something was wrong and not game breaking glitches for a big game back in the day.
they clearly didn't test it hell, i didn't know about this when i decided to play manhunt and i got stuck on that one gate at the beginning of the game i then kinda gave up on it i'm surprised that they STILL didn't bother fixing it

And people has discovered that pirated copies without Denuvo run better because the anti-piracy measures tests files integrity every few seconds.
One of my favorite anti piracy was in Earthbound, where it would just become exceedingly difficult, and then delete your save file right before the final boss so you could never beat the game. You go through all that effort and then the game just takes it all away

Although, it's not that crazy. But Stormworks, a low-poly sandbox game where you build planes/boats in order to rescue others. If you were to pirate it, when you load into the world, thousands of sharks will start flying around you and some into you, at some point there will be so much of them your PC will start lagging until the game crashes

If any bottom parts were shown it probably looked like a Barbie doll(or would that be considered censored). All I know is I don't remember any blur or black bars appearing during nude scenes.
Street Fighter 6 does something similar to the Rabi-Ribi game I accidentally left my DLC Unlocker on and it started to fill my harddrive until my game closed/computer froze

@@Goversher The point is for the developers to make money. Shockingly, this is easier done if the video game is sold for a price above null.
Rockstar also uses cracked/pirated copies of their game Midnight Club 2 on steam. If I remember right, some people cracked it on whatever it was on before steam, then Rockstar then used those game files and not original files on steam. The biggest tell tale this was the case is the hackers left their group signature in the game files of their cracked copy, which was in the Steam copy.
Max Payne 2 on Steam had a Myth intro splash. Yep, that old cracker group.
Since Rockstar owns the copyright on the game, and thus the derivative work of the crack, this isn't actually illegal at all. Another example is gog version of prince of persia the two thrones, which uses a reloaded crack to remove the star force. ubisoft also ended up using a scene crack to fix their broken game.

I remember playing a sims game on the nintendo DS, and i used to change the time and date on the nintendo to skip time ingame and make money quicker, after you did that the ingame Charakters called you a "time travelling cheater"
edit: it was the sims 2 for DS and there was also a alien invasion if you changed the time to cheat apparently

Second, while none of the previous advice can eliminate 100% of copyright infringement, minimize it to the point is no longer a problem, most definitely helps

Okay the story involving Manhunt's piracy being found out from an OFFICIAL copy of the game instead of something related to actual piracy is both hilarious and frustrating
Making players with illegitimate copies encounter fake bugs as an anti-piracy method is pretty counterproductive. I can't imagine someone being like "Oh boy, I surely would like to buy this game that barely functions."

The real thing because they added it, it's because they wanted to evitate Hackers, This thing was added to stop Hackers and Exploiters in Multiplayer servers of breaking and cheating, when that screen appears, the Exploiter Gets permanently banned from multiplayer.

A bit of misinfo regarding Rabi-Ribi. The anti-piracy doesn't trigger as soon as the DLC is, it's triggered upon reaching Chapter 1 (the game starts in Chapter 0). The developer has also admitted to the "every frame" behavior being a bug that they don't know the cause of. Stuff surrounding this game is very poorly documented and is only found in niche discord servers.
6:00 The same thing happened for the Steam version of Max Payne which needs a truckload of patches to play the game because it crashes without them. It's so stupid that these broken ports that have not been supported by Rockstar in years are still being sold on Steam.

Max Payne was originally developed for Windows 98/XP, and the console versions are compromised ports. The game just has compatibility issues with modern versions of Windows.

ive been a gorebox player since 2019 and i did not expect the piracy screen to be here, its a huge honor✊
If I'm not mistaken on the Manhunt anti-piracy measures, they kick in on the Steam version because Rockstar used a pirated version that bypassed the anti-piracy checks in game. But Rockstar removed the pirates' initials from the code which broke the work the pirates did and the game now detects the pirated game again. Did rockstar even test that? if they tested even just 15 mins in it would be blantantly obvious something was wrong and not game breaking glitches for a big game back in the day.

@@markobighead3173The flight Sim Labs one was clearly stealing people's information from legit copies too, and the Rockstar one on Steam is a damaged pirated copy too, forcing people to acquire a pirated copy for the game to actually work.
And people has discovered that pirated copies without Denuvo run better because the anti-piracy measures tests files integrity every few seconds.

One of my favorite anti piracy was in Earthbound, where it would just become exceedingly difficult, and then delete your save file right before the final boss so you could never beat the game. You go through all that effort and then the game just takes it all away

Although, it's not that crazy. But Stormworks, a low-poly sandbox game where you build planes/boats in order to rescue others. If you were to pirate it, when you load into the world, thousands of sharks will start flying around you and some into you, at some point there will be so much of them your PC will start lagging until the game crashes

If any bottom parts were shown it probably looked like a Barbie doll(or would that be considered censored). All I know is I don't remember any blur or black bars appearing during nude scenes.
