  • Team VR-UNiQ took 101 Canopy Course (by Flight-1)
    To help us learn canopy skills and accuracy.
    To be safe during big-way formations and training & competitions.
    Flight-1 instructor: Brian Vacher

    Note: never wrap your break lines over your wrists or hands, unless you know what you are doing and/or you've been briefed by a canopy-piloting-class or CReW instructor. The way I did that in this video is not good.
    Note2: At hop&pop exits it is not recommended to do floating exits. There is always a probability of your main or reserve popping, and the canopy going over the tail lo the plain. If this happens at hop&pop altitude, the pilot and the load have very limited time to exit or recover the plane. Preferably dive exits only. I was learning/polishing my camera exits here and didn't know about this rule then.

    I'm going for aff soon so thank you for this video. The canopy flight is what's getting me into this sport. I can see myself taking canopy lessons right away.

      best of luck with your AFF. Skydive Spain is a good place to do it in one week or so. And yes, sign for the canopy course once you have your license. Best way: sign with Flight-1 flight-1.com/courses

    I don’t know if you have 30 jumps... or 300 jumps, this is still a great video. I watch it from time to time just when I’m bored. Great video. I have 50 odd jumps, and just got my own rig with a pilot 190. Done 2 jumps on it so far... few more tomorrow. Home DZ is Picton (Wilton) NSW Australia.

      thanks! 🤣 I think I had ~220 jumps when I made this video. Our 4-way team signed up for a Canopy Course and this video was supposed to be our reference material. But suddenly it started collecting views madly. I am glad people find it useful.

      Yes, no problem at all. I have no idea how it collected so many views, I recorded it just to remember what we did at that course. Perhaps you may check with Brian Vacher from Flight-1 who was our instructor, if he is OK.

      just emphasise that wrapping brake lines around your hands is not recommended in "normal times" - perhaps only once in your life at good altitude, to check your toggle stall point, if you have a mal at that moment and cannot unwrap the lines, you are in deep shit :)

      @@MikhailBaskov Please note that there is a right way and a wrong way to wrap your toggles. From what I can see the way you wrapped your toggles is ridiculously dangerous. Prior to stalling your canopy when taking a wrap, you should practice releasing wraps before attempting the stall to see if your hand doesn't get stuck when pulling your arm back. I don't see this in the video. You wrapped the (right) toggle around your wrist and if it doesn't unleash when pulling your hand out.. It could lead to a very dangerous situation when you react wrongly to the stall could get an uneven riser twist leading to a spinning dive where you can't release your main canopy because your right hand is stuck inside the twisted risers. In paragliding people fly with wraps all the time and we warn each other about the pro's and cons to certain wraps. Look up some video's about taking a wrap in paragliding and you'll see.

    What is a canopy course? Does it come after A license’s 25 jumps?

      sorry for the late reply. Checking it just now.
      Taking a canopy course is your choice. I totally recommend any Flight-1 course, but there are many good school and coaches all over the world.
      Best time for your first course: immediately after your A-license. There is absolutely no reason why you should delay.
      Also, in USPA progression, you need to fill Canopy Progression Card for your B-

    Hello, i'm new skyidiver, hoping to finish aff next weekend ( only level 7 to go!). I'll be very happy to finaly be allowed a full face helmet (at my DZ its open helmet + goggles for students). The goggles are really annoying in combination with my glasses. I see you always open your visor under canopy, Is this required so you have a better view of the surrounding? I don't think i'll feel comfortable with my visor open, being afraid my glasses might drop, and without glasses i have no clue were i'll land XD.

      Hi Timmy. Congratulations on your AFF progress.
      I also wear glasses. Goggles really annoyed me during AFF, and I was very happy to switch to a full-face.
      a) Your glasses will prob sit tight inside a full-face as they will be squeezed from the sides by the helmet. If not, try to buy tighter-sitting glasses.
      b) closed full face may fog over under canopy as the airflow is slower through it vs free-fall speeds. So, most people open the visor after canopy opening.
      c) Same reason - it may be hard to breath in a closed full-face helmet under canopy.
      regardless, always keep an extra pair of glasses in your jumpsuit pocket, just in case you do lose your glasses. I never lost glasses under canopy, or in freefall, but once i lost a screw in my glasses while boarding, another time one lens fell out - so I used a spare

      @@MikhailBaskov Never thought about it fogging up, you do go from cold air to hotter air in a short period so it makes sense, and i'm usually sweating after a jump. Thank you for the quick reply.

    What do you mean by "turn away from windline"? Turn away from the line the plane was flying?

      VanCityR6 yep. i agree the term is not always correct, as sometimes the drop line is parallel to the wind direction, but sometimes not... at Skydive Spain i believe they drop skydivers usually along the line parallel to the runway actuallt

    In the last jump, what is the idea regarding the stalls? Seems scary.

      To familiarise you with the conditions when such stalls can happen:
      - returning from a deep spot on Rear Risers you can accidentally stall your canopy
      - while flaring (toggles or rear risers)
      ... to let you feel how they progress
      ... and to teach you to recover from the stalls.
      Don't try this by yourself. Talk to your instructor first.
      Better yet, sign up for a canopy course and they will explain it all to you in details.

    NEVER EVER wrap your brake/steering lines over your wrists.
    Here it was done just to find the toggle stall point, at high altitude, under the supervision of a Flight-1 instructor.
    If you have a mal during the stalling practice you will not be able cut-away util you unwrap these lines.

    Hey, I'm currently doing my skydiving course stages. I have a question.. if I end up downwind of the DZ and the wind is a little strong, when trying to fly back to the DZ, can my canopy stall having the nose into the wind? And if that happens what the heck do I do?

      I don't know what turbulance is too much turbulance and I was down wind and trying to fly the big training canopy back. At times it flopped around which was a little un nerving.. so I just sorta crab walked my way like tacking a yacht if that makes sense haha.. but I'd like to know a positive action to make so I feel more comfortable next time to just go.. ohh yeah this is happening.. do this etc

      When you were trying to make it back to the DZ did you use Rear Risers / RR or Front Risers / FR? There are 2 options how to make it back.
      Anyway, if you apply too much of RR you indeed can stall you canopy, so you have to be careful.
      If you are just flying back without any riser inputs I don't think you can stall even in heavy winds.
      In case of a turbulence make sure you fly fast: minimise toggle input, make yourself small

      @@MikhailBaskov okay! I get it. I made a mistake then. Whenever the canopy would shake I would go to half breaks. Like the double flair manover. My instructor told me that it would be basically impossible for me to stall the training canopy but I guess under the circumstances i was a bit stressed and all . I'll relax more next time. When I was under canopy and with the head wind I kept thinking that I wouldn't fly forwards and would be blown back without thinking about the fact that I'll constantly be dropping altitude anyway.

      Yes, it is practically impossible to stall the student canopy as your wing-loading is low. But as your loading is low, you canopy is not as pressurised as the highly loaded canopies, so it may wobble a bit, especially during unstable wind conditions. The trick is to keep it flying at all times.
      And the remedy against turbulence is keep it flying at the highest possible speed.
      But don't worry, you will learn all that at your canopy courses. As you saw in this summary video you will learn to control your canopy in all possible ways - with toggles, rear risers, front risers, with your harness (shifting your body in the harness); you will practice stalling your canopy (there is a way to stall even the most stubborn canopy but it has to be done under supervision).
      Skydiving is a great sport.
      People can fly!

      Part of explore life question is flying into the wind. The canopy doesn't care which way the wind is. It will always fly at the same wind speed. It only the landing that you have to face the wind to have a slow landing. If the wind is to strong then your ground speed will be negative. You end up flying backwards. A bit unnerving but you flare the same way etc. Just make sure you reel in one brake line as fast and as much as possible so you don't get dragged.
