The trailer was SO good it actually made me tear up with that score. I had such high hopes for this movie. I’m now convinced that corporate greed has corrupted Disney in every way now and they no longer carry the concept that Walt valued, “we don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies.”
Walt Disney was a racist and a Anti- semitic, Fuck his value. And the Disney company has always been corrupted, Go watch Song of the South, produced by Disney Films. And learn that companies history.
@@turquoisesands2660 that's not fair. The song is this is something that is wrong, but gives me doesn't shy away from it. 1:13:00 this made me cry man. One of the most realest conversations I've ever had was when my dad was driving me to my graduation and I asked him what was his dream growing up. He said he never had one he started working picking glass out of the trash in Mexico at the age of 6 because he was the oldest. He never had a dream. He worked all those years, traveled to a different country to give his children a dream. Never a day goes by where I'm not thankful for my parents.
Oh definitely, it was about honor. Especially how honor has different meaning when one is a woman, a daughter, a soldier, etc, which Mulan was all of the above throughout the story. It could even be said that those different versionf of honor contradict each other (woman/daughter is supposed to obey, follow, and take care of others (at least back in the ancient days of Asia) while soldiers' honor comes from defeating others). Mulan, however, fulfills all of versions of honor; that's where Mulan as a character really shines, at least in my opinion. But the movie failed to emphasize that.
People were upset Mushu and Shang wasn’t in the movie. But I was upset they got rid of Grandma!!! Also the background actors were speaking Mandarin. I remember they were speaking it when Mulan revealed her chi chasing the chicken.
Disney sucks at making these kinds of movies. It was like the staff couldn’t decide on what direction to take. And end up pandering to a large audience and age group for money and appeal, at the expense of quality. The original Chinese version is far superior.
I definitely recommend this person who also breaks down why Mulan didn't work well, especially from a cultural and story standpoint. The first thing she points out is how Mulan starts off already being a great fighter, which leaves little room for character development. th-cam.com/video/N3QKq24e0HM/w-d-xo.html
1:17:27 Preach! I did the same, went against all odds to do the career I wanted. Earned my own money to pay for my own diploma in the field that I wanted and in that process had to go through a Cold War with my mother for 3 years (she thought I was throwing my life away... I know she worries about me). Now 10 years later, we are more than good because I’m doing well for myself. Sometimes I do wonder who would I have become if I had never taken that leap to change my life.

Good episode, but I’m surprised you didn’t talk about “parasite” by Bong joon ho. Would have been a interesting conversation since western media was obsessed with that movie and it garnered so much praise in the award circuit. Curious about your thoughts since it’s such a culturally specific story about Asian class/family culture so it never made sense to me about why Americans liked the movie so much. Was it fetishization of Asian culture like KPOP or maybe finally recognizing good foreign filmmaking. My personal opinion of the movie was that it was aesthetically perfect but overall basic story that’s common in Asian dramas
Right? I totally agree with what you're saying. It's like the West is discovering film making from the East for the first time since Americans liked it so much. Not to take anything away from "Parasite", but there's so many other foreign films so much better. Even the director said so himself. Classics like "Old Boy", "I saw the Devil", etc. are a must watch!
Loved in 58:28 where you both touched the topic of a person having cultural nuance in order to enhance the story being told, which is exactly the conversation “The Farewell”’s director Lulu Wang brought up when she found out (big time Hollywood) director Ron Howard was set to direct a biopic based on acclaimed Chinese Pianist Lang Lang. If you haven’t already, look up her tweets about it, they’re great (the criticism and misquoting her in other articles, not so much). She literally ends it with, “Have we learned NOTHING from ‘Mulan’? I haven’t said anything because yes representation and many people I love are involved, but I just have to. Just HAVE to. Because 2020 man…and I’m fucking exhausted.”

From what I heard, the Chinese audience hated the movie for many of the same reasons the international audience did. "Where is the music? What, no Mushu?" Most importantly, the whole idea that anyone would automatically be perfect and capable "just because" was a huge turn off for the Chinese audience. Want to be capable? Great, then you better train and study hard. Sacrifice. Only after a huge amount of effort do you get to be capable. Merely being given it was considered offensive.

The funniest scene in the entire movie was when the dad holds up this jade phoenix family heirloom and said "This is the symbol of our family" and it was a different last name in the centre. I died laughing
Its also important to note that in the original movie, Mulan was fighting for her people and her family; not the government. Not to mention, the entire purpose of the first movie was Mulan being a normal girl, and working hard; whereas in this, she was just born with skill, and faced no struggle except being female.

1:18:47 A less extreme version David is become amusic minor while majoring in something that the parents approve and is something he likes ,but not his favorite thing . If the university has a double major program or multi subject degree have music ( like mine Texas A&M International University has a double major degree and multiple discipline studies degree too ) be one and stuff he likes okay with that the parents approve of. The bigest ,but still calm is becoming a music major. One example is a art teacher I had his dad didn't think art was worth it so be studied to be a architect you need so many art classes besides math and science that was his way to doing art. I know someone likes filming so they got a communications degree and minored in marketing as backup he could get a job in marketing useing his knowledge of photography, filming, creative writing, and so on. 1:23:43 The You Tube Channel called Today I found out has videos about that how a topic like historical moments are taught in different places. They still making some offen. That guy Simon though got many channels and team helping him he sounds professional and intelligent in most channels except Business Blaze he purely himself and holds the script .
100% agree. Also, the movie left nothing to the imagination. They spelled EVERYTHING out and there was nothing to infer as a viewer so it got corny really fast. "Loyal, brave, and true" couldn't have slapped us in the face harder. One scene that had potential was towards the end during the fight scene when Mulan loses her sword but the emperor told her to "rise up. You are a mighty warrior. Rise up like a pheonix. Fight the kingdom and its people." BRO, SHUT UP. Took away ALL the sentiment from that moment. Maybe if they drew in a flashback about her dad telling her about the pheonix or something and she realized what she had to do. But no, they had to state the obvious. It was terrible and I was so disappointed because I really looked forward to the movie.
Essentially it was the suicide squad of disney the trailer was phenomenal and the movie was garbaggio. Also growing up i knew a kid who's name was darren kwak. Also there is a white comedian named esther povitsky
the only thing that made sense was her not kissing the guy because it's not suppose to be.a story about a girl who falls in love, it's supposed to be about a girl who found herself.
I feel like they're confusing elitism with capitalism. There are elitists who support capitalism for sure, but the ideology of capitalism is that success should come from hard work, not that "special" people should be freely given power (I'm talking about purely the ideals, not saying a specific political ideology is a superior system, in case someone tries to put words in my mouth).
I loved Searching! I totally forgot about that movie, so when David mentioned it, I gasped because he dragged the movie out of deep vault of movies I've watched. I want to watch it again now
1:02:19 Maybe it’s cause it’s not nostalgic to me, but this is what I’ve been thinking abt bloodsport since I first saw it, objectively it’s a terrible movie but every yt comment I see about it praises it like it’s the greatest movie ever
I haven’t watched Mulan 2020 but I have heard about the awful broken English and it baffles me that they have it when in the animated film. In the animated film, they don’t speak broken English, at the most, only father Fa, mother Fa and Grandma Fa had a slight accent because they were older, I suppose. At the most, in the live action, they could’ve followed that route because that’s how it is in real life with modernized Asians where only the older/first gen like our parents/grandparents would speak broken English...but we as their children, the younger generation; we can speak perfect English and (most if not all, can also speak and or understand our native language)
I feel the same way about the broken English in Shows from Korea or China that have white people who are acting as foreign English speaking people. It seems so off when the white people in those shows can't speak English properly. One of the best asian-american film is The Great Wall. No broken english.
I once had a white girl come up to me, bow with her two hands clasped together, like in a prayer when greeting me. I told her Chinese people don't do that. She blurted out: "But I saw it on TV !"
Honestly I was excited for the film, but it should have been obvious that it was gonna be bad when they didn't have a single Asian person behind the camera or script. YOU CAN'T DO ADAPATATIONS WITHOUT SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
I appreciate this podcast because honestly when I first watched Mulan I enjoyed the movie. I enjoy hearing other differing opinions of such topics because things are brought up that I didnt even come to mind. Also, how come all Korean men have the best radio and podcast voices? Lol

That guy Simon though got many channels and team helping him he sounds professional and intelligent in most channels except Business Blaze he purely himself and holds the script .
you stole my shoes, david....i'll need those back
The ads I got for this video was Mulan lmao
It was terrible and I was so disappointed because I really looked forward to the movie.
when i was 8-9 years old.. i got mad and said, :SHITMAN".. my mom took a knife and slit the tip of my tongue. Lolz #fact
Essentially it was the suicide squad of disney the trailer was phenomenal and the movie was garbaggio. Also growing up i knew a kid who's name was darren kwak. Also there is a white comedian named esther povitsky
59:00 omg what a damn throwback. Need to watch that again
Who else would want to see a sketch of the male protagonist from Mulan going through gay thoughts? That would be hilarious ;)
The movie flopped in Asia too for being pro-ccp LOL
the only thing that made sense was her not kissing the guy because it's not suppose to be.a story about a girl who falls in love, it's supposed to be about a girl who found herself.
I agree. There are a lot of misinterpretation between his ideas and what he's comparing the movie too and it's pretty insulting honestly.
@@stepaniki3319 It's a shame too, since I definitely agree with them on their criticism of the movie.
Good point!
I loved Searching! I totally forgot about that movie, so when David mentioned it, I gasped because he dragged the movie out of deep vault of movies I've watched. I want to watch it again now
My uncle had a friend get killed in the riots, my dad had to carry his 1911 around the whole time. Shit was nuts during the riots
Make a video on doing a career change and what to look for
1:02:19 Maybe it’s cause it’s not nostalgic to me, but this is what I’ve been thinking abt bloodsport since I first saw it, objectively it’s a terrible movie but every yt comment I see about it praises it like it’s the greatest movie ever
Where do I skip to to listen to what I came here for?
Dude's info isn't in the description box
Pokemon in the background thooo😂
Okay honestly, I fell asleep not even 20 mins into mulan 😅
after 20 years im still only proud of the Mulan movies/series as a childhood memory, all these whitewashed remakes are so baaaaaaaaad....
Yooooooo! I have SOOOO many church scandal storiesss!🤣
Not me being in a Korean church that split off from a bigger Korean church 😂
12:26-13:47 the build was so good lol
Cut a little short there at the end David, I'll see you next week tho
I once had a white girl come up to me, bow with her two hands clasped together, like in a prayer when greeting me. I told her Chinese people don't do that. She blurted out: "But I saw it on TV !"
so i didn't miss anything, good to know
Yo, t-town in the house! Shout out Tacoma 😎
Honestly David's grandpa is the best😂
Honestly I was excited for the film, but it should have been obvious that it was gonna be bad when they didn't have a single Asian person behind the camera or script.
YOU CAN'T DO ADAPATATIONS WITHOUT SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
my ass getting distracted by the case of water david has next to him
are you smoking cigars ? why are you spitting while smoking?
I am American, and I can attest, Korean movies /TV shows are amazing!
hahahahhaa you should check Kungfu from CW, that is weird hahaha
I appreciate this podcast because honestly when I first watched Mulan I enjoyed the movie. I enjoy hearing other differing opinions of such topics because things are brought up that I didnt even come to mind.
Also, how come all Korean men have the best radio and podcast voices? Lol
