Hi Bailey, it doesn't hinder me from using the first fret. I have it behind the first fret, so it is having no impact on the instrument. I only use it for studio recordings, and not these youtube videos. Specifically, it serves as a mute and minimizes resonances and noises from other strings when slapping, playing a fast solo, playing chords, etc.
