  • What the heck is the deal with putting a trailer on a jig? Is there a need for jig trailers, and does it help you catch more fish, or cause you to catch less fish and waste more $$?? In this video, I explain my thoughts and experience for fishing for bass with jigs, and why I use trailers on all my jigs. SUBSCRIBE if you like bass fishing to join Team TylersReelFishing!

    For colors, I have found matching jigs and trailers to match the forage of the lake I fish. Example the craws in my lake are brown on the exterior parts(such as the legs and pinchers) and the main body and head is black. So I match a brown jig with a black trailer.

    Great information on turning craw sideways for Bluegill tails...can't wait to try...when I was a young lad, the only trailer we had was a Uncle Josh pork rind..they worked great, only problem was if the jar leaked or spilled in your tackle box....you had a serious mess...lol...thanks again for the lesson...

    I agree on just about everything.. Great information and tips.. The only thing thing I see a little different through my experiences is that the trailer doesn't always have to match the jig. The most success in the Green pumpkin jig with a red algae crawl trail. That 1 did match. But the one that I use throughouse the Spring and Summer when the temp's got hot was a black blue with a white paddle tail.

      @@TylersReelFishing sure thing Tyler! It's nothing but the truth. And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. I was curious about something. Did those guys in the canoe have any success with the jigs and tips you gave them? It's tough learning how to fish new ways sometimes. I honestly don't try enough new stuff. And I don't stick with the ones I do try very long. I've got a bad habit of just going with what has caught me fish in the past. But that limits me soooooo much. Unfortunately though, I don't really get much time to fish. I try to go a couple of days a week at least, but it's only a little before and a little after work. So I don't get much time to REALLY experiment. It sucks 😔 Because, as you know, they aren't feeding the same way, in the same spot, with the same presentation everyday. I try to change up my retrieves, trailers, and colors some... but beyond that I don't change much. And my problem is that I am STUCK on chatterbaits. I love them! I don't jig or worm fish much. I'll tell you why. Because I honestly feel like I miss so many fish just because I don't know I got bit, and that's frustrating. I bought a couple of fairly nice rods, I use braid to fluoro leader, and I try to use tungsten when I can... but I still feel like I am getting bites that I don't know I'm getting. And I just don't get how you seem to know the fish is there, and know when to reel down and set the hook. If you have any tips, I am ALL EARS! Because I really need to move out of my comfort zone and really invest the time and stick with things I'm not comfortable with until I get comfortable. Anyway, thanks again. P.S... I think I like the chatterbait so much because I feel connected to it and I know it's doing what it's supposed to be doing because of the vibration. Thanks for any info 🙏✌️🎣

    Okay I agree with almost all of this video except the part where you said that you need to match trailers. In my experience as long as you are close ish to the jig color you will be fine. My best week of jig fishing was at Lake of the Ozarks using a Chompers and Jewel pb&j jig with a reactions inovations black and blue flake beaver. It was a weird mix I did after I ran out of zoom super speed craws but it put me on a pattern where I would catch 30 fish an hour during key hours.

    If you think getting an elaztech bait on a heavy duty hook, you really would have hated getting an Uncle Josh pork frog jig trailer on a jig. I only fished them very early in my fishing career, I’m 49. There was bound to have been a trick to getting through basically a chunk of leather that was kept in formaldehyde until u put it on a jig. Old timers for the most part say bass held onto pork much longer than plastic and that they were tough enough to fish all day. You just had to keep it wet or it turned into pork rind.

      @waynestiner347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trick to getting a pork rind off the hook is to turn upside down and push and twist at the same time,, pretty easy after you get the hang of it ,! I’ve still got a lot of pork

    I plan on using braid from shore. My biggest questions are .Set hook lighter or leader the braid with fluorocarbon? And can you do that with a swim jig?

      set the hook lighter. Search “TylersReelFishing swim jig” or “TylersReelFishing jig” to find more videos

      It’s the Anglr Bullseye! Pretty cool deal for pre-fishing/breaking down water but even better for actually fishing. The Anglr app is basically a digital logbook that allows you to drop waypoints and saves all sorts of data about each fish catch that you can come back in later and view or edit. Stuff like wind speed and direction, air temp, barometric pressure, etc. The app is free but they offer add-ons like the Bullseye that just make it a lot easier to use. That’s the little thing on my hat in the video. It’s like 30 bucks but you can bluetooth link it to your phone and that way each time you catch a fish you just hit the Bullseye and it logs all that stuff without having to take your phone out each time. People compare ANGLR to Fishbrain, but it’s much more helpful at making you a better angler than Fishbrain

    And this is why I fish and learn from myself because I've heard actual profession that are sponsored to say mismatch your color on your jig or your Chaturbate trailer each to their own it's all by feel fish and learn

    • @HereComeMrCee-Jay
      @HereComeMrCee-Jay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing wrong with mismatching color. Many multicolored jigs are made of colors and combinations that you won't find in your typical lake or pond, yet they catch fish. And large flair jigs, for example, almost always have what amounts to a differently colored trailer. Your typical game fish is not carefully analyzing lures for realism... If they did, jigs wouldn't work at all!

    I know you've made other jig videos, but I am randomly watching this one right now, so I'll ask this question anyway.
    Why do companies think that a "skirt" material makes a jig look like whatever bass eat?
    Who came up with the idea that putting some stringy material on a waited hook would convince a bass that it looks like food?
    If I were to not know anything about fishing in itself, and I saw a skirted without knowing other fisherman use it, I would think, "How is the going to make a bass bite it?"
    So..... The only reason I use a jig in my arsenal of baits is because you and others use it and say it works and also because companies wouldn't sell them if they didn't work I suppose.

  • @jhard94

    Are there crawfish in south Florida ponds and lakes? If not, does it make sense still to mimic a crawl considering so many trailers are crawl immigrations.

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Craw trailers don’t have to imitate actual craws all the time. Most of the time, they just add action, which fish love a lot of the time. Just like a top water “frog” hardly ever imitates an actual frog, mostly bluegill

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you do it the best way possible, but most pro anglers (myself included in that group even though I'm technically not a pro), learned back when left handed baitcasters didn't exist much, which is why you see the switching. I am making a video about this soon

      Swimbait is really only applicable when bass are eating baitfish, which primarily happens in the fall and late spring. The rest of the year I’m throwing watermelon or green pumpkin based jigs since bass are then targeting bluegill most

    The thing you said about rigging the trailer vertical to imitate bluegill and rigging it horizontal to imitate shad makes no sense lol. Shads tails are just like bluegills tails. Not knocking ya tho lol. I love swim jigs

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn’t mean to imply that. meant to say that vertical rigging imitates a tail of both, horizontal allows more lift and water displacement, which spawning Shad usually do, not bluegill
