    It was an expensive car from a maker not established in the expensive car market. It had controversial styling. It broke a lot and ate transmissions and brakes.
    I still want one badly.

    I assume most commenters have never driven or owned an SVX. It doesn't eat transmissions or brakes. Engine is bullet proof. The suspension pisses on most modern cars. I own two.

      I have one myself, the 4EAT wasn't built to hold up to the torque levels of the EG33, it was basically a last ditch effort by Subaru to mate up what was the strongest transmission they had at the time. If Subaru had offered it with a 5MT or 6MT, they would probably have sold a lot more vehicles.

      @@dean07252000 actually the 4EAT can handle upwards to 400 hps, and has more strength than the STI 6speed manual, yes I said it, 4EAt performs better in drag racing and rally than the manual. I own 3, one of them is a JDM (not drag racing or rally).
      The real untouched JDM 4EAT is the gem that SVX was made to have. Problem - USA did not have AWD dynos in all states, and therefore some SVXes had to be converted into FWD, this reason the original 4EAT had to be modified, making it underperform, the changes were hasty and last minute, and turned to be catastrophic.
      I don't downplay the manual 6 speed STI, its amazing and that's what I'll be getting for my North American SVX, but the JDM one has the original 4EAT and it drives nothing like the NA. Very quick smooth shifts, from start and at highway speed. Every quirk and downside (other than it being an auto) is not present on the JDM. It is very refined, and I drove from Vancouver to Toronto in 4 days, and it downshifted maybe 3 times during the whole trip, it will eat inclines like a beast, its very fine tuned for the SVX.
      On your point about selling more, yes I agree a manual would have made it a better car and sell more. However the true tale of the transmission is unfortunately untold.

    It's too bad cars have grown into the chunky, overweight, many times grotesque monsters that they are today. Imagine how cool one of these would be if it were housing today's technology under that sheet metal! I may still own one as a counterpart to my convertible one day. :) (if only the interior were a bit more on the sporty side, I'd make it happen for sure)

    It didn't sell well for one. It couldn't measure up to its competitors at the time. The comp. was stiff---3000gt/stealth, rx-7, supra, 300zx---just couldn't provide the performance. Plus, this care costs a fortune to maintain. It was manufactured with poor engine components and so once these cars get some miles on them, you and your wallet seem to get further and further apart.

    Lol.. this video is great. I love watching old stuff like this. I think the biggest problem with these cars was that they never came with a manual trans. That, and the interior isn't really befitting a sports car.

      @@mb4lunch which I don't get because its competitors like the 300zx, rx7, supra and 3000gt vr4 costed at least 5000 more which is a lot for then. I think it really came down to brand because Subaru was not what they are today. I would credit subarus growth to basically all of their cars throughout the late 90s to mid 2000s because they are legendary. The impreza wrx is great, well, because of fast and furious or some movie. The outback was a hit and the forester too.

    • @meifyoucan
      @meifyoucan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't compare that disgrace of a car that is the BRZ with the SVX. The BRZ is a RWD 4 cylinder designed to be sporty. The SVX is a luxury touring super car, needless to state its AWD and has a Flat 6

    • @railfanatic1416
