I liked the show with Max, but toward the end, the last couple of years, I began to be uncomfortable about how he was treating Max. My wife, who was indifferent to most of sports media, hear him one day and said, "Why is he being so disrespectful to his co-host?" So Stephen was right, but not for the reason he imagines.
At the time, I think most agreed with T.O. - Max surprisingly had a better pulse on the average minority’s perspective. He even threw in hip-hop references that only a fanatic would catch. Stephen A definitely got rid of Max to recapture that demographic.

I don't think talk shows succeed because of text book intelligence, it's more a formula that needs specific personalities, roles, and chemistry. It's a dance and if they keep awkwardly stepping on each other's tors they're not a convincing pair.
I think it was the black issues that derailed their relationship the most and overall Max's refusal to adapt into the role SAS wanted him to play. Max's personality profile is not a fit for the type of debate show SAS wants for First Take.
P.S. intelligence didn't stop Max from getting fired, which concludes my points above.

What I witnessed from day one of Max's debut on FT was a man far more prepared to debate, more knowledgeable, more eloquent, and intriguing. Lets be honest, it's really both.
The problem has always been that Max is intellectually superior to SAS in every way--and it burned him up inside. Having a white man intellectually outclass him on black issues nationally was too much for his ego to take.
Stephen admitted to having Max fired because he was "too smart". What that looked like though, was that Max out-shined Stephen on social issues (BLM, the elections, the pandemic, etc). Stephen tried to be an entertainer instead of being earnest, and Max's genuineness made him look like a fool.
sas didnt want to be "earnest" because that would mean he would have to buck dance all over the set of 'first take' (wearing a cowboy hat for jerry jones)... he was hoping to APPEAR to be black

Bro I used to love first take with Max. It was actually a debate show then. As Marcellus stated, the dynamic with Skip was Stephen A saying what the rest of us thought to debunk or just completely pick apart Skip's outlandish takes. Max articulated his opinions very well and SAS couldn't just be loud or gimmicky enough to combat the sharp points that Max made. It was clear on several occasions that SAS couldn't cope with Max's arguments and it was dimming his starlight in the eyes of viewers. SAS just spinning this web of deception and he's getting lost in it at times.
I agree. Max didn’t give SAS or any of the supporting cast wiggle room to make their points or use their niches. They all rolled their eyes and smacked their teeth. Max is exceptional at making his claim, providing data and then using his knowledge to add backing.
