I think Kurt's authenticity is very much tied to the fact that he steered clear of elaborate techniques. It's very difficult to sound like you're spontaneously expressing yourself if your performance is too complex and polished. The band apparently stayed up most of the night before rehearsing for the unplugged performance, but emotionally, it still doesn't sound overly rehearsed.

    • @tylurmackinnon6217

Kurt was one of the greatest melody writers of all time - it's amazing that a young man with no formal music training had such an ear for melodies. His voice was never as amazing as Chris Cornell's or as unique as Layne Staley's- but as you mention, it was authentic and raw - I think all of who went through that time were convinced of just how achingly authentic his voice was. Was lucky to see Nirvana twice live - both incredible experiences!
Another performance of his to check out is his rendition of Leadbelly's 'Where did you sleep last night?' - yes it's great from Unplugged, but the rawness and anger in his Paris performance of it is a window into a man absolutely at the end of his rope - Pennyroyal Tea live on French TV another great one.

What makes Kurt Cobain unique is that his voice brings a sob. Essentially his voice is a sob on its own. He makes me wanna cry. He sings as if he does not understand that he is singing but as if he presents a piece of it in front of our eyes. Testimony of the soul without having to prove to anyone how great an artist he is. How sorry I am that he did not stay with us, to grow up with us. He had so much more to give us. RIP Kurt. We are poorer without you and We miss you 4 ever

when you said it was "country," i immediately said "YES!" -- because it's true. it's country in the old style, that emotional crack. I know this is weeks later, but this video has always been really interesting to me, because Cobain gives so much away, and most people don't notice. My father was a world renowned psychiatrist (although that isn't all that much renown, to be honest), and I'm bipolar, and do outreach to people with all types of mental illness. I have seen many, many, many depressed people, some who have gone on to commit suicide. I've been extremely depressed myself, depressions that lasted 18-24 months, they sucked very much.
There are a lot of "hints" that things are going really wrong: He's not bathing (his hair is filthy), he's cold (he is wearing a big fuzzy sweater on top of a shirt, everyone else is wearing one layer). His affect is pretty much gone (affect is your face's emotional responsiveness). If you look at his face throughout the performance, it's blank (another way of saying that is "blunted"). He's not making eye contact, or even looking at the audience, he pretty much looking at the microphone. He kind of looks like he already feels like he's dead. He looks like someone who is about to kill himself.
I saw this performance when it was aired (on MTV). I was freaked out when I saw how extremely depressed he was, and my dad and I actually talked about how bad Kurt's depression was.
If any of your friends ever look like this, please intervene, and try to get them to go to the hospital. Even if that friend hates you forever for forcing them to go into a hospital, it's better than their being dead.

Hi Beth! Worth checking out the last song from this set: Where did you sleep last night? Lots of good Cobain vocals there (inasmuch as he's terribly imperfect, but emotes so beautifully)

I've always been torn on which is best between the unplugged and Live and Loud versions, but I also think it depends on the occasion between the two. I do believe both serve as the purpose of knowing how much emotion Kurt is putting into singing the song. Unplugged gives that personal feeling, but I know when Kurt sings the Live and Loud version, I get just as emotional if not more, because of him doing the screaming in matching with the solo at the end. Either way, it does hit me in the feels.

Always loved this song. Never heard any version other than Bowie until a few years ago when I heard Cobain cover it ... He did it justice. He sings it just like Bowie, but ... very Cobainy.

John Popper and Ziggy Marley also did an amazing version of No Woman No Cry that really showcases Poppers voice. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't!

You are right in that it was foreshadowing. Look at the set. Funeral with all the lilies and candles. I think I read he was jonesing during this but still probably his best performance.

“I will upset you by saying its almost country”. Actually a LOT of the unplugged set kurt uses a southern drawl for emphasis on many of the songs, most notably where did you sleep last night. Kurt loved him some country/southern music….leadbelly was his favourite artist.

the song always reminds me of the faceless man in an the scifi/horror tv show Sapphire and Steel which was also influenced by the poem Antigonish
