Not your problem. Sold a used vehicle with NO warranty, independently inspected with no issues. It’s on the customer. Horrible luck but not yours to deal with at all. I know it’s a tough spot with that individual being your friend.

I have an auto Merc myself and do sometimes wonder, 'what if'! End of car, in my case - which is a shame, because a manual box, if it gives trouble, can easily be repaired. But auto? Specialist job. I share your pain and hope maybe you can get a salvaged box. Shall look forward to next edition. ;)

Had you flushed and replaced the transmission fluid during your maintenance routine on this van Peter, would the oil be in this condition?
Seeing as it's a friend, and assuming you aren't suspicious about what's happened here, I'd point to the van having being previously checked and passed as fit for purpose and also that the van was sold privately, with no warranty, and the sale price reflected that. I'd then suggest that you, out of friendship, and not out of obligation, pay half the cost of a replacement, and do the labour yourself, but with his help, even if that means just passing you the spanners. If he has a problem with that, then you'll know he's not your 'friend' and he's trying to pull a fast one here. All depends on how much you value this friendship really 👍

There is a filter inside the Transmission that should be replaced when you change the fluid. And you should flush it during the filter/fluid maintenance. But this one probably never maintained.

There is a filter inside the Transmission that should be replaced (you have to drop the transmission pan to access it) when you change the fluid during regular maintenance. And you should also flush it during the filter/fluid maintenance. But this one probably never maintained. It is my understanding that if properly maintained these transmissions will last the life of the vehicle.

You sold the truck, any problems that arise after it are on the buyer. Not your responsibility. Risks you take when you're buying an old vehicle. Do not feel intimidated

Where I live these vans are very common so the reliability problems with these automatics are well known. Bad luck for you the box gave up just as the new owner took over the van, also he probably thrashed it to find out how fast it was. This is a killer as we see here. 4000 Dollar for an overhauled box with proper garanty is quite a reasonable price bar selling the van as is I would quickly order before prices go up.

Caveat Emptor, he had the van inspected and agreed to buy it, after that it's his problem. Sprinters are money pits anyway. Mercedes will charge you $500 just to open the hood.
