To be more precise, the purpose of Paul in Philippians 1:21, when he said "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" is to tell the believers in Philippi that his imprisonment is not a failure but that by God's grace, it is a success for the ministry (1:12). That even in the midst of false preachers who preach for other agendas (e.g., fame, to put Christianity in danger; v.1:15-18) and persecution because of his ministry, the Gospel is advancing. And in all of this Paul commits to Christ by faith in service, that even though he perishes he must continue on in service.
What we can learn from this, first and foremost is that only through Christ do we have a living hope & confidence, and that the Gospel will never be kept under a bowl permanently. That God is sovereign in everything that happens in the world, regardless how dark it may become. And that Christians are to know what God has called them to do and live by it, and die in it.
A person who says he is a Christian yet cares only for himself and his own, is no different than a unbeliever. A Christian is a sinner saved by grace, transferred into Christ's church, spiritually indwelt & gifted for a specific ministry for the purpose of edifying other believers and evangelism. The promises of Christ is not for the Christian who merely seeks comfort in the security of his home, but for the soldier who perseveres in denying himself and carrying his cross. It is for those who are willing to go against what the world is and be despised by the world in exchange for what is true. Sadly, this genuine faith is rarely found in a contemporary church setting that mixes Christianity with secular themes to be somewhat accepted by the world -the very thing that it must separate itself from and reconcile to the Lord through the Gospel.
