    ''They say whatever you're looking for, you will find here. They say you come to Vietnam and you understand a lot in a few minutes, but the rest has got to be lived. The smell: that's the first thing that hits you, promising everything in exchange for your soul. And the heat. Your shirt is straightaway a rag. You can hardly remember your name, or what you came to escape from. But at night, there's a breeze. The river is beautiful. You could be forgiven for thinking there was no war; that the gunshots were fireworks; that only pleasure matters. A pipe of opium, or the touch of a girl who might tell you she loves you. And then, something happens, as you knew it would. And nothing can ever be the same again.'' Thomas Fowler. The Quiet American.
    Saigon today is nothing like it was when I was here 50 years ago. These days when I walk around Saigon I walk with a foot in 2 worlds. So many memories. Returned in 2002, and have been here ever since.😉

    Till now Vietnam is the best country I have ever visited. The people over there are so nice and welcoming. The country is so beautiful and so clean, and somewhat affordable. The best food I found is almost everyone's favorite also, i.e., Banh Mi. Two best places to definitely visit is Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay. If someone love beaches then you should visit Nha Trang as well, which is in the South, close to HCM.

    9:21 looks like you paid st least 2x what it costs, always check price online first - e.g. AExp (you should be able to figure out the correct spelling - real one will probably get censored and deleted). prices for non-branded items in non-modern mall settings in comparatively less developed countries (relative to yours), shouldnt be anywhere comparable to what you would need to pay in your home country; REAL prices in such situations are generally much lower.

      @@ThePassportCouple Please know that as an American, Canadian, or Australian, it's not legal to drive there. Not saying don't do it, but if you get caught, don't do videos blaming the cops for driving legally there. Many people don't know their country didn't sign the 1968 Vienna Convention, which is what makes driving there legal (assuming you also have an IDP for the class of vehicle/bicycle you drive). Yes, some cops look the other way or take small bribes, but legally, you're still in the wrong so if you are caught, know you were doing it illegally and don't post negative videos bashing the cops/laws. Or lobby your politicians to sign the convention. :) BTW, saw some amazing videos from Ha Giang Loop from LukePalms (he went with Jasmine Tours), Skye Samuels, Lucy Gray, CularTravel, Paddy Doyle (episode 3-6, 10-12...but he didn't do a lot of research prior to going on there and his culinary tastes were very limited while he was in Vietnam), Kinging-It, etc.

    First in….The colonisation bit…do appreciate that you are aware of the issues. No, not for the current generation to feel responsible or guilty about what happened in the past. But still good to be aware and be sensitive to local thoughts and feelings. Anyway, usual joke: only thing that colonisation produces is the same output from the COLON.

    • @lamtrinh8780
      @lamtrinh8780 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The word colonisation itself is a clever way by the western powers to make themselves appear less evil. They never say France invaded Vietnam because that would make France sound like the bad guys. They say colonise which has a more neutral sound to it. It's a bit like Russia invading Ukraine. They don't call it an invasion, they call it a "special military operation" 😂.

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lamtrinh8780 Yep. The French have their own best interests at heart. They were there for their own financial gains and power. They were the ones whom renamed Gia Dinh to Sai Gon (which is funny when all the overseas Viets keep insisting that others call the city Sai Gon without knowing it's not the Viets whom named it that, but the French). The French were also the ones whom divided the country. Ho Chi Minh was a true hero for trying to shake the yokes of French rule. Lots of overseas Viets go on about Ho being a slave for the Chinese...well, he wouldn't have been had the US assisted when he asked. He spent decades appealing to the US for assistance, but got nowhere. Then the US wants to get in the fight, so he had to turn somewhere and there was China next door willing to lend a hand. Had the US helped when he asked to get rid of the French, then things would have turned out differently.

    In the traditional Banh Mi they’ll put pate made out of livers, pork meat call Chả and another type of pork meat. In the market place call Chợ Bến Thành you normally have to bargain at least half or even 3/4 of the price. In the mall or super market it’s fix price. But in the areas where you guys bought your clothing you must bargain to get a good deal. I think you were at Chợ Bến Thành.

    Never recommend folks to go to Ben Thanh, which is literally a tourist trap. There are many other markets that sell certain stuffs that you need, Kim Bien market for chemicals, Binh Tay (or Cho Lon) for a pretty close atmosphere of the Chinese, Ho Thi Ky market if you wanna buy some flowers and Le Hong Phong market for a dip in Cambodian culture

      They're paying for the convenience of everything housed in one place so they don't have to run over the city to look for things. Also, Ben Thanh Market vendors pay higher rent, so the base price is going to automatically be higher. They can haggle down to whatever they are comfortable with.

    It’s dirty and dangerous city, nothing special but noisy and people who drink a lot of beer and spirits then driving on streets, nearly 20 thousands of people died from accidents each year, unbelievable.

    You seemed to have fun bargaining which is great. You probably paid a higher price than the locals, but you did not get ripped off; otherwise, you would not have bought the merchandise.
    Everybody does price differentiation in every country, except that some places are more technologically advanced than others. You can travel by plane and the person sitting next to you may have paid twice as much or maybe half as much as you did for the same ticket. You and I can be watching the exact same page online and get different ads or the same ad with different prices. They already have all the information they need from us based on our credit card spending patterns, web surfing, zip codes, etc. and charge us accordingly.
    Everyday people in developing countries don't have that technology so they use something more simple: Your looks. If you are a tourist from a rich country, you have a greater purchasing power, so they price differentiate. They expect bargaining and it is fair and fun; however, always remember what that extra dollar means to you and what it means to the average person there.

      This is an extremely insightful comment, thank you for sharing it. And everything you said is true. If we so much as look for a flight to a destination, we are inundated with travel ads for that country and airlines that fly to it. You also mentioned to remember what an extra dollar means to us versus someone in a given country. This is something we always bear in mind especially when shopping in markets like Ben Thanh. We typically have a price in mind that we aim for, but end up spending a little bit more, and we are okay with that. Bargaining can be a fun way to interact with the local community and our aim is always to walk away with both sides feeling good about the price 👍

      You put it much more eloquently than I did in a video that I watched earlier from "Chase and Shelbs" where they titled their video with the word "scam" which automatically gives it a negative connotation. They actually enjoyed haggling and did a great job of it, but the title of the video should have been worded differently. I mentioned how in the US car salesman do the same thing but we accept it and buy from them. Also that prices vary on Amazon and other online shopping sites, but we don't go complaining to Amazon about being scammed if we chose an item that costed 30% more than the same item offered by another vendor. Am I scammed if I buy something for 10-20% less at Walmart than Target? No, I just choose to shop at Target when I can as I like their store better since they provide better service, nicer stores, etc. Also, Ben Thanh Market vendors pay higher rent so the base prices will be higher anyway. If Westerners are so afraid of getting ripped off, then go to the malls where prices are set and on full display in those countries. They visited those types of vendors for a reason.

      Hi Sidharth 👋 We purchased an e-visa through iVisa. They made everything super easy and when we arrived we simply showed our documentation from iVisa and that was it. We also got everything back pretty quickly but I would say to be safe, give yourself 2 weeks to get everything back just in case. Here’s a link for 5% off of iVisa: www.ivisa.com/apply-online?promotion=promothepassportcouple (good until 10/12).

    Tip for crossing street in Vietnam:
    Many tourist foreigners scared of traffic in VN . Don’t worry about it! The rule to win this fear is keep routin slowly walking when you across the streams of motobike! motor-bykers knows how to avoid you themself in chaos-order! remmember do not runs and stop suddently , accident immidiatly ! Don’t be affraid of and do it if you want to be safety in the crazy- traffic in Vietnam.
    It ‘s not popular but you should be careful with your phone, wallet, jewelry… its may robbed/ stolen … in Saigon! Hanoi and many another province are ok!
