Let me tell you why, years ago when south were playing swans at Fremantle oval instead of running straight through Brian Ciccatosco I saw Gary run around him and gather the ball in and pass it on up the ground. What a man, what a sportsman, how fair this mighty man was. RIP Gary I’ll always remember you as a true sportsman!

Gary Sidebottom was a big man, but a very fair footballer! He would prefer to run around the smaller opposition players than brutally run through them as was his right in accordance with the rules at times. I was a staunch south Fremantle supporter and I watched Gary run around A small south rover by the name of Brian Ciccatosco instead of slaughtering him Gary sidestepped him and gathered the ball in and passed it on up the field. From that moment on, Gary won my eternal respect. He was a true champion.
My introduction to Gary was a game against Collingwood at Victoria Park. He was playing for St Kilda and a Collingwood defender was standing behind him. Back in those days, the boundary line was close to the fence and I was just metres away. I saw Gary give the Collingwood defender an almighty smack in the face behind play and the Collingwood crowd protested in uproar. The umpire turned around and Gary lifted his arms in the air, protesting his Innocence. The Collingwood defender got up, with half his face red, like a lunar eclipse. By the way, he didn't stand too close to Gary for the rest of the game. I'm a Richmond supporter and laughed at my mates, all Collingwood supporters. I don't exactly think he was fair at the time.
great player in victoria also he said a few things tongue in cheek about the vics and was taken completely out of context that detracted unfairly on his great onfield play here
As a StKilda fan , Gary was one of the most exciting players I had seen , come to the club in 1979 . He was magnificent to begin with but was suspended for running into Terry Cahill. I felt he lost some interest after that episode . I rate him with John McIntosh, Stewart, Baldock as one of our great recruit ...
