I have been reading a book called Zinky boys on the subject. Its pretty intense, short interviews with veterans and mothers of soviets lost during the war. Highly recommend it.

you should check out the Arab Israeli war mod for it, probably one of the best games on the current conflict. well the 2005 time period

Wonder if you can play as Afghanistan government in other scenarios. Such as trying to stop the invasion itself.
Yep you sure can, either side.
also after 5 years new major update coming for toawIV. hope they will fix air war and so modern scenarios
but not high hopes, looks like developer prioritizing other things.
