Lester gave a great insight into Alleged. How this horse isn’t considered one of the greats I’ll never know. If he’d run in the Derby I’m sure he’d have won easily.
Terrific. Superb rides in America on sir Ivor and royal academy (goosebumps that) extrodinary. By the eddery was booked to ride royal academy at Newmarket in 7f challenge stakes a week before breeders cup till they changed their mind as Lester says here. Without doubt Nijinsky was beaten by piggott deciding to give him a whip or two and that's why he veered across track. Remember it was the first time Nijinsky had ever been whipped before I think. Not sure if he got a small flick or two but don't think so. It's clear from video when Lester gave him a good crack he veered and lost the race. It was a perfectly timed ride as usual just unfortunate in hindsight. He was just giving him a whip to make sure of winning not presuming what would happen. Rip legend lester
Lester was the greatest jockey of all time , nine Derby winners proves that., nobody else would have got Roberto home , great rides on Nijinsky , Sir Ivor and The Minstrel . A travesty Lester waan t knighted , so many great rides Athens Wood and Commanche Run in the St. Leger , but Sir Ivor and Royal Academy in America have to be right up there . I loved his association with Nijinsky , poetry in motion , made for each other. He is a true legend .
@eugenekeher978, He was all the nobler, in the true sense, for NOT being "knighted. Do you want the great man to be included with so many undeserving "chancers."
The Royal Academy ride was totally outrageous at the time that he should win after just coming out of retirement nobody else could have done that and it was meant to be him reunited with Vincent again somethings are just meant to be and that was what happened he couldn't lose! 8/1 outrageous!!! :)))))))))))))))))
Best rides ? Thats kinda subjective.. I remember him winning on Vorvados for Mick Haynes and I still cant quite believe what I saw ! Ditto a ride he gave one called Mott The Hoople for Pat Haslam in a seller I watched many years ago,, Monster gamble and Lester rode as if the bulk of the money bet was his ! We hear the expression a jockey carried one over the line.. Ive only ever seen one ride where that applied and it was that one in a seller Lester remains the best ever and Ive seen the best all over the world close up.. Ryan is not far behind .. The rest ...... Love that he came from a mile back on Royal Academy as if to make a point after criticism for doing so on Sir Ivor ! Oh and as always the late ratatatatat close one A one off and not just a racing great but a sporting great.. The human version of Secretariat if you like !
Lester was and will remain THE Greatest jockey of all time nobody compares with him he had that something rare and special
Lester's ride on Royal Academy was the mark of pure genius. Lester is the GOAT.
Such a lovely laid back man. Little wonder he had nerves of steel and a wonderful temperament. Great man none better.
I was in the grandstand that day, and I have never seen nothing like the reaction from the crowd.this man was like the Messiah for horse racing.
Got this video for my birthday in the early 90s, still got it...

Without doubt one of the greatest jockeys to have ever graced a racecourse, R.I.P The Long Fellow.
even the subtitles can't penetrate Lester's grunts R.I.P
Sir Ivor 🏇 Amazing Ride By Lester 🏇GRH🏇👏👏👏🙏
I backed silver patriarch finished like a train and should have won the derby...i always said if lester was on him he would have....

Was he ever going to get beat not a chance 👊👊👊👊👊
Most 2yo and 3yos were moderate giving classic winners artificial high status to go off to stud.
