      Hey there Seamus! Sometimes the simplest and cheapest things are truly the best, like this setup. I can't see spending hundreds for something that you can make for just pennies on the dollar. Thanks for the kind words!

    Im really amazed that you still reply to comments on this video. I see potential after what i saw. Your videos arent boring like you said, you just arent comfortable enough on camera, i can hear passion in things that you say. Relax and make it flow, make it more casual and dont be afraid to show emotions!

      Why not reply?? If people are kind enough to comment, why not reply! LOL As far as being comfortable on camera, I get the same reaction from my camera man, producer, sound man, makeup artist, and post editor!...(oh wait a minute, all those are me!).... Also note, I am a cancer survivor of Toncil Cancer and I do struggle a lot with "dry mouth" from 7 weeks of daily radiation treatments, so part of my struggles with my videos is talking. Sorry.

    Thanks for the video. I am making a sharpening rig like yours. I have a used Northern Tool bench grinder and have ordered the diamond discs. Some difficulty finding the stainless-steel wire brush, but my welding supply is ordering one to test from a local CT maker. The Weiler stuff is too expensive for me, a hobbyist.
    Keep up the good work. A video now and then would be great

    I have been doing something similar for many years now. I use 2 lapidary wheels 8" and 6" stacked outboard of my 8" grinding wheel. I use 360 and about 600 grit. I always use a drill motor to keep my fingers clear (i use short tungsten). I tell everyone who will listen but you are the first i have seen with a similar (but much much more advanced) setup. Nicely done.

I am just looking at getting a tig/arc welder to add to my hobby shop and have been trying to decide on a sharpener as well... and bam! Should be a blade line up of aluminum 80, 180, 400/steel 80,180,400 this would put your dust for each in it own space for less contamination I think. I also would put a divider between the wire wheels for the same reason. Thank you much for your time and information.

    Awesome setup and great video. Just got my fist welder a few months ago and been teaching myself on the weekends, with youtube videos. Never touched a tig welder before and I am having a lot of fun learning. Already got a water tight box! Lol
    My next upgrades will be a better tungsten grinder setup (currently dremel with 120 grit diamond disc) and water cooled torch (currently running ck17 flex air cooled, so gets hot quick with aluminum).
    Any insight on torch selection? Flex, no flex? Going to do a lot of aluminum but I'm limited to the 225 amps of my machine. Thanks!

    • @ndav8r
      @ndav8r  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words Cole. Nothing wrong with 225 amps. You could use Helium to get a little more penetration. As far as torches I own(ALL 25')...I have in air cooled I have a #17 & #9. In water cooled I have a #17 straight, & #9 straight, a interchangeable #17/9 flex head, a 350 amp Super Flex #20, CK Super Flex Micro Torch, and Latest which I really love CK SuperFlex FL250 Flex Loc.

    I actually have the EAA magazine you showed this very tool in. Was so glad to run across this video. My question is about the diamond disc you are using. Are they full face use or are they just a narrow band on the outer diameter of the disc? I can find those locally as they are used for cutting tile and other such things. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! George

    • @ndav8r
      @ndav8r  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are full face on one side only. that is why I set them back to back (smooth side to smooth side). I know what you are talking about with the tile cutters. They should work but full face disks will offer longer use. Thanks for the kind words.

    • @ndav8r

      You could get by in using just one disk, maybe a medium 180 grit would be OK. But you wouldn't have a micro finish on the tungstens.

  • @brianb5779
    @brianb5779 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You def seem like the guy to ask. Do you always blunt your tip no matter what? Was curious if you ever have scenarios where you dont. Also getting ready to order discs tonight. Ive shared your video w other welding buddies and must say i cant wait to try out this process and see how diff the arc is. Thanks again

    • @ndav8r
      @ndav8r  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Blunting the tips ensures a more controlled electron "feathered cone" off the tip, and more importantly, is that you do not get what they call "tungsten inclusion". Tungsten inclusion is when you go beyond the tungsten's upper amperage range and melt the tip and drop into the molten puddle, thus contaminating the weld and in my case in Aerospace welding would definitely FAIL tests. A good scenario would be lightly honing the end of the pencil lead after sharpening to a very sharp point so you don't bust off the point when writing with hard pressure.
      Blunting is for real critical welding operations and not so much for common welding, but for me, I got into a habit (a good habit) even if I have to weld rebar together. It is best to develop good critical habits in welding to cover all welding operations! Thank you for the kind words!
