I am extremely happy to discover such a great performance of this violin concerto. In my opinion it is one of the best violin concertos ever made, and such a pity it is not more often performed!
I think this also influenced the style of the resulting work. It seems to me necessary to indicate dual authorship, otherwise it is unfair, and simply does not correspond to historical facts. Gliere was more interested in pleasing the authorities than Shostakovitch; getting three Stalin prizes among his 15 official prizes. He avoided getting singled out by Stalin's man, Zhdanov, for official disapproval in 1948 unlike Shostakovitch and others like Prokofiev did. Composition of Shostakovitch's Violin Concerto No. 1 was disrupted by that trial, taking a number of years to be performed after Stalin's death. Shostakovitch's Violin Concerto No. 2 hadn't those problems and both were for David Oistrakh.
A delightful concerto that would merit more frequent performances
