    Here in OZ at this time of year we carry a snake bandage. The slivering things look like large twigs until you spot them moving. Adds to the trail hazards and keeps you focused!

      A snake bite bandage and the knowledge how to use it should be common place for any outdoor activity here in Aus much like the ability to read surf conditions and when and where to swim. Sadly not these days.

    • @andycjohnston
      @andycjohnston 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @pokinacha - I've got a new one which has rectangles printed along it's length. Then when you stretch it tight they extend to the correct compression when the rectangle turns into a square!! It's a super simple design, flipping brilliant!
      I'm up in Castlemaine (Vic), so there's a fair chance.

    • @pokinacha
      @pokinacha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andycjohnston that does sound brilliant. Will have to look for one of those. I just use a bulk pack of got from work and make sure my young daughters know what to do when faced with a real possibility. I’m in the ACT and any snake we see is venomous

    If you want to carry master link pliers on a ride then Wolfs Tooth Components do a couple of MLP based multi-tools.
    Also, regards names for vans, my mate drives a Mercedes Vito called Danny ;-)
    First aid kit tip, throw away your tube of anti-septic. Older first aid kits used to contain a *tube* of anti-septic, they don't any more because they were ironically a great place for bacteria to grow. Modern first aid kits have use-once anti-septic wipes or spray, so there is no contamination next time you use the kit.

    Critical addition to the quick link pliers: extra large paper clip. Bend it open into a double hook so you can put it either side of the master link so your chain (and master link) doesn't go flying off into the bushes!! 🤣

  • @Dan_Kornfeld
    @Dan_Kornfeld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Fenders are inexpensive, and come in a variety of sizes and graphics. Velcro or zip tying a fender onto the fork, not only helps deflect dirt, sand, and mud away from you, and your bike’s downtube, it also shields your fork stanchions from damaging flying debris.
    Hack: If the ride is going to be especially wet and muddy, I’ll zip tied a spare front fender onto my seat rails, with it sticking out behind my saddle. It really helps keep the skunk stripe of mud and water off your bottom and back.

    I carry a Wolf Tooth pack pliers with an extra master link, plus in a zip lock bag I have extra valve cores, a few bolts, narrow strip of duct tape wrapped around a paperclip and a few zip ties. As for First Aid I also carry a Sam Splint and ace wrap. One thing you missed is a piston press. We've all had that "oh shit" moment where we've accidentally hit the brakes with the wheel out - it's happened to me a few times where i've gone to test a brake after putting a wheel back in and then accidentally gone the wrong one.

    • @stallitite9157
      @stallitite9157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tell me about it. My little brother recently went “oh, what does this do?” And pulled the front brake lever while the wheel was off. I didn’t have a piston press so I had to use a screwdriver. They’ve been pretty dodgy since that.

    I don't know about UK, but in every country I have lived, you are obliged to have a first aid kit in every car. Thus, if you go to the trail by car, the first aid kit is already there. Also: if you need one and aren't by car, or cannot get to your car easily, you should be able to ask any car driver to help you out, since they all should have a kit with them, and are obliged to help you to some extend (though as long as you can approach them, probably not, as things likely aren't severe enough).
    But if you can get to any parking lot with cars, just ask around. Someone will hopefully help you out.

      @@cjreeve79 It's always a delicate balance. Transport is one area where we need to do better, on that I agree. I'm lucky that I live in an area that is well served by public transport, so I tend to rely on that as much as I can. Some other areas of the city I live in aren't quite so well served, so it's not practical for everyone to do that. While we can, and need, to do better, this is one area where I think there will need to be compromises because the most environmentally friendly option isn't always the most practical or convenient.

      @@dogwomble I don't see it as a balance, I see it as a matter of trying. That might mean using a more efficient car or replacing it with an electric wheel and tag along trailer with your trail wheel and kit. It's about finding enjoyable ways to use less energy instead of buying a bigger vehicle and running the engine to keep warm. We will all need to make changes in our lives. This chanel could be an inspiration for using the most efficient vehicle, the bicycle, as a way to have fun and burn less fossil fuel.

      @@cjreeve79 ok then, you can help do your part by stopping charging your phone or laptop, that would save a bit of energy, then also you wont be able to come on youtube when they are out of battery and come up with petty little comments because some people use a van to get out and about on their bikes
