This was my first ever Warehouse Experience and I was so glad I bought the ticket. Also, first time watching these two live. Reelworks is Godsend for Denver music scene.
Can someone please explain the process of this remaster? Was the source audio some random recording (not good quality) - what did he have to do to get it to this (how is it different from the original set)? Thanks!
Mastering is like colour grading in video. Is still considered a "black art" since is hard to grasp the impact and what is happening. Visually is easy to see but hearing is very subjective and as well is needed some ear training and experience to make some decision when it comes to processing sound. Mastering these mixes is a final polish. What this mean? For an example many of these mixes have a lot of high frequencies and they pierce ears and hide the mid content. Low end is cut very much since people learned that we can't hear frequencies under certain threshold. In many instances there are a lot of crackles and distortion due the compression witch remove sonic content for the aim to make the file size smaller. From the original recording only about 15 % of the information is left and listening a long mix will give a sense of tiredness due to the underlying distortion and artefacts. Imagine a compilation. The aim there is that the tracks have consistent levels and mood. When one track is louder or brighter is just a distraction for the listening experience. These mixes are like a story and good dj's are doing already the hard part to match in some degree the levels but is done live. This is not a definite answer but some aspects of the mastering process. As well how wide the stereo image is, how much bass and what is the overall mood.
