  • Compounds which have the same chemical composition but different properties and this phenomenon is called isomerism.
    1. Structural Isomerism
    2. Geometrical Isomerism also known as Stereoisomerism
    3. Optical Isomerism
Compounds which have the same chemical composition but different structural arrangements are called structural isomers.
    a. Ionization Isomerism: Compounds, with the same chemical composition, but forming different ions in solution are called ionization isomers.
    b. Hydrate or solvate Isomerism: Compounds having the same chemical composition, but differing in the number of water molecules in the coordination sphere are called hydrate isomers.
    c. Linkage Isomerism: Compounds having the same molecular composition but different mode of attachment of ligand to the metal are called linkage isomers.
    d. Coordination Isomerism: Compounds, where both cation and anion are complex ions, the distribution of ligands between the two coordination spheres can vary and give rise to coordination isomers.
    e. Coordination position Isomerism: Polynuclear complex compounds having the same number of coordinating groups that are distributed in different way around the metal ion are called coordination position isomers.
