Kate Martin has always been like that. At Iowa she was called the glue, helping to keep the team together. She is a great locker room team mate and does everything on the floor. Lisa Bluder, her Iowa coach, said that when she's done playing she's destined to be a coach. In addition the fans love her too. Sitting on the bench last year her jersey outsold Aja Wilson (which may be why she never got any playing time). The Aces were fools to let her go and the Valkaries would be fools to lose her.
If you view stats for her team by "per minutes played", rather than by "per games played", KM is: 1st in Steals, 2nd in Points and Rebounds, 3rd in Assists and Blocks(T), and has the fewest Turnovers on the team . . . and yet she has been given the fewest minutes(9.7) per game by far.
This format suits her, and she’s a diligent role-player, but what can she really do in the WNBA half-court when her 3pt shot isn’t falling? I’d like to be proven wrong, but I don’t think she has a career as a starter in a 5x5 league.
I have heard the athletic director back at Iowa saying there is an office waiting for her to be a coach. Nice to know she has a future in BB after her years as a Pro. I have seen Jacy Sheldon coaching at Ohio State this year. Good for her !!! Perhaps Robin can put up a vid about that !!!
I’m an Iowan, Kate has always been a tough baller! You have to be fast and a utility player who can shoot to be a “ break out star” in 3vs3 format. That’s Kate, glad her coach is smart enough to recognize this. If he is part of the wnba system, he is a rare gem breaking status quo.
To me that was the only positive I could see in unrivaled league: to showcase underappreciated, talented players. I especially hoped Kate Martin would be able to play more and show us what she can do.
In Iowa, we are glad she escaped Vegas, they screwed up. She was called the "GLUE" at Iowa for a reason. Like she has said " My Ceiling is High". The wiil be a leader for the Valkeries.
The Aces really screwed up when benching Martin. They had such a great player on their hands, but never gave her a chance to shine. She's great! She also has the 4th highest WNBA jersey sales. A'ja is 5th. She's impressive in every way Valkyries scored a real one!
That would be a defensive gift to the Fever. I am so glad she is gone from the Aces. Benching her was a punishment for being a friend of CC. Those of us who saw her defending the Hawkeyes was amazing.
I really hope Kate Martin is at least a top 3 starter with the Valkyries. She has the skill and the toughness to be great she just needs the PT. If she was still playing with Caitlin she'd be scoring a lot more, but I want to see her shine when I watch GS games because that won't be happening. I've noticed that Unrivaled spreads the floor with just 3 on 3 which highlights players moving with and without the ball in open territory, with many more 1 on 1 highlights and less defenders crowding the paint. It also takes more advantage of defensive switches or deficiencies for more open layups.
Yes it is quite a drop. But I feel like this is only the beginning. People have to be invested in teams, players and game format and the more people who engage online whether positive or negative will draw curiosity because it may seem like everyone knows but it's still people who don't know about the league. The numbers will never be great but I do suspect there will be a bump as the weeks go by. Also this is new to players as well so teams and game styles are not yet fully established.
@@Momula101 I appreciate your enthusiasm, however, I cannot find excitement whereby thousands of fans cheering on their teams are excluded from the games.
@ What I am saying is that the absence of an energetic, enthusiastic audience of many thousands of supporting fans is contributing to the general lackluster performance of many celebrated players, the majority of which likely are dialing down their physical prowess to reduce the chance of injuries which may prevent them from playing the WNBA season. In other words, this unexciting, risky format completely sucks!
@@Harald- I see well I agree that the lackluster crowd as well as the camera angle facing away from the crowd is definitely a big problem. Don't know if anyone is necessarily dialing down though they are physically exhausted.
As Kate will for sure get more playing time with Golden State. I predict the viewership numbers during their games are going to be second only to the fever games.
13/7 her Senior year, her 6th year because of Covid19. The Fever dogged it at the number 12 pick, letting Vegas steal her at 15. Kate didn't get those broken noses playing R/P/S.
Nah if Katie Lou can start so could Martin who is a much better player. I know, different coach but Caitlin would also want her to start. Both on the same team is likely not happening though.
Kate had always been a great basketball player If anyone watch college ball they would know that. Becky kept her on the bench so she really didn’t have any opportunity to show her skills. Really happy Kate is going to the Valkyries. 🩷🏀
With the Aces, Kate averaged 11 minutes a game: 2.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, less than 1 Assist, Steals and Blocks. She shot less than 31% from 2 which I think was the worst in the league. I hope she makes hits her stride with the Valkyries.
I read in one of the comments that she's always played like that in college and she has she's that type of player that just does the dirty work she crashes the boards loose balls tough defense and she can get her own unlike a lot of other players she just got caught on a stack team with the Aces I'm sure if they figured Plum was going to leave they probably would have protected Kate

So happy for Kate Martin. I hope she wins the Most Improved Player award next year and becomes an All Star
Her head coach at Golden State is a big believer in her, so that'll be huge!
Anyone from Iowa knows what Kate “Money”Martin is capable of. We watched her for 5 yrs.
I have heard the athletic director back at Iowa saying there is an office waiting for her to be a coach.

Indiana fever needs to get kate martin

Unraveled viewership went from 301,000 down to 113,000 in one week.

@@Harald- I don't understand what you mean. All games are in Miami and it only seats less than 800. Not everyone goes to WNBA games..most never do.

Every game for Kate is a home game. LOL.

Not “freely.“ It’s “free.”😊
I was hoping she would be a John Havilchek for the Fever.

Give smith to valkyries for Kate please plus a pick...fever win
pipe dream not happening the Valks want to keep Martin.
She cool..but man she scored 11 points. Rickea was smoking in her game scoring 24 and gets no love is crazy
Disappointing that Fever could have easily Drafted both Caitlin and Kate
