  • When snugging up the cinch, does he stiffen in his body, get flinchy, raise his head, or widen his eyes? Does his facial expression go from mellow to nervous? These are all signs of a horse that's not mentally sound.

couldn't cinchiness be a reflection of pain? the pecs may be very tense. sometimes ulcers can cause this behavior as well. Carson is amazing but we have to remember pain is usually the cause of "bad"/negative behavior

I've seen a lot of horses that have mental tightness causing physical pain. Like the one in my profile picture who lived her life bracing for the car crash.

I agree. It definitely can be a reflection of pain. Being uncomfortable can be tack fit issue as well. Poorly fitted tack can make a horse cinchy and fidgety AF. Physical and tack issues should always be addressed near the top of the list. That tree is sure up on her shoulder, so I think you have made a good point and have a good eye.

@@PetraHChristensen Agreed. I do have to say that I agree with Carson on many points, but this video is not one of them. I don't see a relaxed horse at any point in this video, I see a horse in a state of learned helplessness after being told the signals she is trying to use to communicate don't matter. We all have bad days, I think this may have been one for Carson. I certainly hope this was just a bad day, and this kind of work isn't a part of his daily technique.

You also have to remember to check all those things out first the worse it could be is ulcers and other symptoms go with that. Very rarely is it back pain or at least it’s uncommon unless it’s mental tightness sometimes being tense can cause them pain and that’s why you work to get them relaxed.

@@uncensoredhorse a horse isn’t going to be 100% comfortable the first day it takes time and he literally explains that... I think you need to take some more equine training lessons because this horse is far from helpless

Horses are naturally claustrophobic, to varying degrees. So, to them the cinch/girth is apt to be a big deal for a while. Rule out physical causes (including back issues w/a physical therapist or chiropractor), but realize that sensitivity to a girth is part & parcel of being a horse. Proceed slowly but appropriately.

Do you have a video for what to do with a cold backed horse?

My horse is cinchy but this would definitely make it worse. He doesn't try to get away.. he bites. This is not going to help. I need to figure out why he reacts.

Sometimes getting the horse away from you and being stern with them helps. But it would take a trainer to look at your horse to be able to give the best advice I know some people don’t like Clinton Anderson’s training methods but his methods are geared towards aggressive horses you might see if he has something?

As Carson states, everything is interconnected. I tried this with a horse who had been cinch for ten years, pain issues eliminated as cause, and she was better in first session!

Looks to be a nice Paso Fino. Seeing how she is gaiting in her walk.
