It's a Historical song mentioning not by name but phrases- " I met a girl who sang the Blues..." is Janis Joplin. Mick Jagger and the Stones , Elvis and JFK to name a few are also mentioned.
I was in las Vegas a long time ago when they first closed down the street down town and covered it. They had a light show at night and would play music, which was actually pretty cool. They played this and nearly everyone on the street stopped walking and sang along. I'm pretty sure this ranks at the top of the chart for all time sing a long songs. lol
I was around when the plane crashed, but too young to really understand it all ~ I didn't come to understand the impact Buddy Holly had until later when many major artists would talk about his influence on their music ~ it's a challenge identifying those referenced in this song
I'm glad that you're keeping older music from back in my day, (60's & 70's) alive for younger people who might not have been exposed to that era otherwise. I hope she enjoys some of it ! 😉 😉😉
I was born in 1964 the last year of the Baby Boomers. I am 60 years old and found your channel when I saw your Don McClean American Pie reaction listed.
At one point, Don McLean was asked what this song actually means, and he said "It means I never have to work again" (because he was making so much money off the residuals at the time) 😀 Weird Al Yankovic parodied this as "The Saga Begins", where he sums up the entire plot of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" in about four minutes. (The film hadn't even been released yet, so he pieced together the plot from internet rumors and the preview trailers.) Afterwards, McLean admitted that there'd been a couple of times when he was performing the song in concert, and *almost* started singing Al's lyrics instead. 😆
there so many musical and historical clues in this song you would be totally lost if you did not look them up. This'll Be the Day I Die is really Buddy Holly's song That'll be the Day I Die. Buddy who? Oh boy, here we go...the Beatles loved Buddy Holly's music when they were growing up.
Love this song......great meaning...Don McClean is a super vocalist and many years later his voice was still very original...The plane crash crushed me....Lost some great artists. Not sure if you can slip this song in sometime....The original Rolling Stones " Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones (RIP died so young), Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts..The song "Lady Jane" 1966. Great that you are inducing your daughter to the music of our generation, those that grew up through the 60's and 70's.

Aw I love that!!!
So much history metaphorically referred to in this song. When the plane crashed it ended a period and started another in rock and rol history.
