Thank you for this very useful advise for me to get back into my art. The very reason I tend to to put off starting a picture is fear and worry that it won't turn out good something that will be less of aproblem after having tried your warm-up practice..
This series of exercises is exactly what I needed. I know it's goofy to believe one can be an artist without practice but seeing what I've sketched was discouraging. My brain says I can do this but the skill set just isn't there yet. I know that but I never understood how to practice and what exercises helped. Thank you. I will try to sketch every morning to build up as a routine to my day.
This has been so helpful, especially after breaking my shoulder a couple of years ago from a seizure that never fully healed & all the less stressful thank you, you must be an Angel ⭐
I love you Wendy. You gave me so much hope and strength for me to continue drawing! Thank you. I love fairies too!...... I love the music you sometimes have in your back ground. Please keep mentioning the name and singers or player .... you are a beautiful person and author..... I got the book you mentioned about drawing and I am practicing more. And I have more confidence in myself……thank you. I am so happy to have found you. By the way my name is Maria. People call me LuLu. I live in British Columbia Canada
These warm ups are helping me get back in the gaMe. Thinking I could use some of my practice pages as torn bits in a journal? I took notes! Warm ups: Draw in random directions, weights+sizes, use full arm+shoulder, add 3-d effects, shade? Use diff pencils, pens. Dont’t think! 1 straight lines 2 swirls spirals loops 3 squares rectangles 4 c’s 5 circles, ellipses 6 s shapes 7 spheres, cylinders, cones, ovoids 8 doodle repeated random shapes of diff sizes; consider coloring it in 9 consider random faces, expressions, angles, bodies, body parts, draw without lifting pencil, don’t look at page, non-dominant hand-but all quick sketches Thank you so much!
I got back in to art via colouring. It allowed me to play with pressure, with layering colours one atop another etc witrhiut being accountable to anyone. From there, I began drawing again. Don't be afraid to be "wrong", you'll learn far more from your mistakes than you will from your successes. Experiment. Have fun.
I've been struggling with the 'getting started" part for some time. It always seems easier in a class vs sitting home staring at a piece of blank paper and now I know why - directed practice! Who knew? lol. Thank you for an excellent video.
I agree - for some reason I have such a hard time to draw paint etc at home. I have no problem in a class/workshop setting. I'll try to do some warm up doodles or something like that. 😊
Hey Wendy, I think Ive just found the perfect teacher to slowly walk into my 60th year with.... thank you. The boxes of clear out upstairs, can now be revisited and some favourite pieces rescued in readiness for morning journaling and writing.. how fun is this?
Thank you, I am enjoying the gypsy journey. I have started a journal, thanks to you, and I just now enjoyed the drawing warm-ups. My shoulder is telling me I worked it. :) I am 70 and in the last few years, I have been slowly creeping into drawing. I started at 7 yrs old and stopped immediately. It seemed too hard. I didn't understand then that it was all about practice. Shocking to me now that I could have been drawing all my life. Maybe. It might have saved me the 60+ yrs of creative frustration. Don't feel stupid, much! :) Thanks again.
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing your tips of warming up. I will share this video with my daughter she needs to start drawing again. Have a blessed day!
So appreciate this video and it is helping me to reestablish my drawing. It’s been a long while. You are an amazing artist and person. Thank you for sharing
This is great! I often want to just dive into my journals, only to find myself sitting there staring at the blank pages wondering, "what was I thinking?" After I get a thought, the rest kind of starts to flow; it's the priming that takes the longest. Thank you! 💕💖
Me too I’m over the hill but willing to beleive I can learn a bit to create a bit of beauty in my soul …it’s so relaxing and helps me 🧘♂️ focus better
Well I used to do this kind of drawing spirals, square, circle when I am on the phone! If I have a long chat at the end my paper are full of this little draw that you call warm up. I can't draw I found you through the art journal because I love to write, I do like diary. I'm loving your videos. You are amazing 👏 thanks for sharing your skills and thoughts 😀
I m so pleased to have discovered your videos x Like you , and many other women , I sleep quite badly and am awake in the early hours of the morning x I also find myself isolated for many hours of the day x You have inspired me to start on a journey of self discovery and to allow myself to make mistakes x Thank you x x x
I got to this video because of another that referenced it. In that video you talk about art journals, sketchbooks etc. It was so refreshing to hear that you don't put pressure on yourself to finish a book or have it be perfect. I try to do something art-like every day. So far in 2021 I've only missed one day. I love these exercises.
I used to love drawing and colouring but life and work seemed to get in the way. Now I’m retired I am going to try your technique and see how it goes. Thank you for sharing. Xx
Such beauty and creativeness! I adore your lady with her hand on her face! I just found your videos recently and have been kind of binge watching them. Thank you for sharing!
These were great ideas, Wendy. I used to draw all the time when I was younger. And then life happened! I really want to get back to it, and I think these tips will help me greatly. I'm trying to work through all your videos chronologically. I saw Video 1 (Patreon only) of Making an Art Journal from an Altered Book, but had trouble finding #2. When I finally found it, it wasn't a continuation from the first one, and looked to be pages and pages ahead. I was really bummed. I'll watch it, of course, but I wanted to see what you had done to finish that first spread. I may find it yet, but I'm still learning so much with all your other videos. 💗
Hey Wendy, excellent video! I've had various sets of training in public school, summer programs, a mentorship, self-directed studies w books and magazines, and now TH-cam. Every instructor I've ever had has unanimously done the warm-ups, just like you're doing. With aging injuries in my hands, etc., even after yoga, reflexology and Reiki sessions beforehand, and on those days when it takes time to transition from the crazy outer world to art, I can absolutely see the value in this. Thank you. Bright blessings.
You are so amazing! A true inspiration! Thank you for that! Truly!💙 I haven't drawn in a couple of years, and really didn't know how to get back in the habit. You have been my muse as of late, and I have picked the pencil back up today. Many thanks!💙💙💙
Thank you, Wendy, for such an inspiring video. I’ve saved it so that I can refer to it again and again. The warm up exercises are brilliant. I’m slowly working my way through your other videos and I’m enjoying them very much. 😊
Hey Wendy! Stumbled upon your channel. It's a comforting presence and a needed way for encouragement and positive outlook. It's one of the best things to come to me in this very disjointed year. Looking forward to your Patreon where the new month starts! ✌& thanks!!
Oftentimes, I would just get started on a project or else my mood disappears. On the other hand, when my mood isn’t there but I know that I need to work, i think that this exercise will help stimulate creativity just by feeling the pen and skin touching paper. i hope that makes sense. thanks for another great video ☺️
Yes the warm up activities have helped me - here I an almost a year after you made this video and I have just done a little sketch after watching - thanks for sharing the tips! X
This is a fantastic video with great examples. Thank you for sharing! I just recently started to pencil draw and experimenting with acrylic and water paint. Definatelly trying to learn everything on my own and will be doing exercises for wrist and arm on daily basis. Thank you again for sharing.🥰🎨✍
Thank you so much! This is was so helpful and inspiring. I have watercolours which I like to use and I also went brave and got some Gouache to play with. I’ve not picked up my brushes nor pencils for months! You’ve just given me the push I needed. I need to practice with the warm-up prompts you suggested first. Thank you Wendy xx
Omg who thought of doing the pencil ) drawings as a warm ups ? great idea...Wendy, so sweet and so helpful videos..come to think of it Its the doodles we made as childrens and especially teenagers at school..
Thank you so much for this 😀 I have been wanting to begin drawing but didn’t know how to approach the blank page having no previous experience. This really helps 😀
I haven't drawn or painted for about 2 years due to lung issues and adhd giving me poor focus and extreme fatigue. Starting to get back into art again slowly. I have a "Lockdown Sketchbook" going on at the moment. It will be wonderful to look back on in future years :)
Hi, you're obviously very gifted. Ive taught myself to draw, but havent done an for 2years and its back to beginning again and really hard. What art course did you do.
I love drawing too, one tip which help tremendously with proportion is to draw on inclined plan. When you draw on an horizontal surface, your drawing can be distorted. Try it !
Thank you so much for this. During lockdown I’ve been drawing more than usual, but still get so frustrated with my results. I never really knew what was meant by warm up. I had heard that I should do it often, but really didn’t know how to do it, or more importantly, why. You’ve explained it perfectly, and now I can’t wait to get started! ❤️
To train imagination I also like the color dust from pencil sharpening to smudge on the paper. It gives some texture and I start to see things wich I then can accentuate.
I really like your work its very beautiful. I am trying to get back into being creative again. I did a textile course at uni ages ago lost my mojo with it when I struggled to get a job, depression and anxiety, lack of opportunities.. I am not very strong with drawing I would like to get better at this. I am interested in mixed media art ,texture, surfaces collaging and art journaling more nature and natural forms/ elements . Is there any online courses that could help me learn the techniques ? Or should I stick to books?
This is an excellent video. I can’t wait to get started with this. I am a sculptor (clay) that has really become interested in illustration but just didn’t know where to start. Now I do! Again, thank you.
Hi! thank you for the instruction!! I'm an old 60 y.o. gramma, trying to learn how to draw!! I'm wondering if you might share what type of pencil are you using?! My # 2 I believe it is, requires a lot of sharpening, as I do your tutorials!!! Thankyou!!!
Not switching the pad to different directions earned my respect.
So professional approach and noble mindset.
You are heaven sent!
Finally, a LEFT-HANDED demonstration ... thank you! :o)
Funny - I didn't think about which hand she uses.
Hello from a fellow lefty!
