Dante's Peak is a much more realistic disaster movie and it has plenty of suspense without insanely unrealistic nonsense. I'm in the midwest all my life....some of the golf ball size hail has happened. Also do appreciate yall, I do think the movie at least keeps consistency with people calling out the bs but at least its consistent with how no one can explain whats happening. Big ups to you guys

In college we went and bought beer during a tornado watch because a new game of thrones ep was coming out....turned into hail and a tornado warning 2 miles away but got the beer and watched game of thrones and ignored it
So the thing I want to know is, when the helicopter pilot opens the door after the crash, and freezes almost instantly; is it even physically possible to freeze that fast? Even if in air that is below -150 degrees C?
People on Everest have to have EVERY bit of skin covered because frostbite is instantaneous in the Death Zone and higher altitudes and Everest is -51 C, so yep, you'd be an instant ice cube
I just watched this on TV in the UK and thought this weather on a slightly smaller scale is actually starting to happen. Like the UK is getting major winter storms at -28°c which is a lot colder than normal. Our summers are regularly getting into 34°c and peaks of 38°c which is unheard of here. We have floods and droughts, we used to have boring weather. Also look at Houston and Texas getting -18 and all the energy infrastructure failing, this climate change is starting to look a lot like the film. Although I noticed at the end of the film even Houston didn't have snow on it so the real climate is worse than is depicted in the film 😆 anyway hi from England 🏴
This film is the cause of years & years of torment for me & the wife, our daughter saw this and wanted to study palaeoclimatology.... afters years of environmental bashing us.... she's now well on her way to completing becoming paleoclimatologist, the only exciting thing to happen to her so far was getting stuck in Antarctica during covid lockdown, they stopped all the ships to Australia for 8 month's.... she wasn't happy🤣🤣
As "science fiction" as this film is supposed to be, I live in Ottawa, Canada (the capital) and as crazy as it sounds, we actually had the tornado scene for real in 2018 - 6 simultaneous tornadoes hit the city and region (I remember thinking about this movie as it happened). We'd had an ice storm in 1998 that deposited 9cm of ice and caused insane damage. Then as if that wasn't enough, we had a derecho in May of this year (the 6th most damaging storm in Canadian history); it did apocalyptic damage. 190km/h per hour plus winds and insane rain - streets were completely flooded and it crippled the hydro system and we had no power for 13 days where I live, in addition to not being able to drive as power poles were snapped like twigs and downed everywhere (I live next to Merivale Road where it did the most damage and the photos on Wikipedia are a block from where I live). Giant trees were uprooted everywhere in huge numbers blocking streets, etc. so couldn't drive either, fences all torn down. It looked more like a film than reality. And the clean-up still continues. We haven't had the Arctic hurricane yet, but as much as I once had thought this film was pure fiction, its been sort of like a prophecy for us. They expect more stuff to happen as it goes.
I thought of this movie when a tornado hit LA a few months ago. Granted, it was only an EF-Zero and did little damage, but the science of the movie is fundamentally correct. As Dennis Quaid states, the North Atlantic Current is very fragile, and it is only a matter of time before it shuts down. Not overnight like in the movie, but like he says, "maybe in a hundred years, maybe in a thousand". And further, the superstorms pulling supercooled air from the upper atmosphere down to ground level is also happening with the "bomb cyclones". Granted, not cold enough to freeze gasoline like in the movie, but like -30 degrees F. I remember reading a book about the Iditarod as a kid, and the author was saying that if it's cold enough, and you breathe through your mouth, you can actually freeze your throat and lungs. I thought of that in the helicopter scene when that guy freezes instantly when he opens the door.
This movie scared tf out of me when I was younger. I literally thought this was going to happen. I vividly remember seeing a big flock of birds and thinking the end was near lmfao
I dunno about tornadoes causing earthquakes but here in Kansas it's possible to get both, we had a 5.3 while out west was having a blizzard and just north and west were tornadoes, it was freaking terrifying!
The way the movie explains the supercooling is that we through our planets ecosystem so out of each that it had to find a state of equilibrium in all of this global warming so the planet creates three hurricane like storms across the planet that are so powerful that in the eye of the storm it is ripping down supercooled tropospheric air at temperatures of -150° F that rapidly supercool the surface of the planet
The thing is that the events in new york is sorta true, new york would have looked like that 70 million years ago and 22,000 years ago. If new york went back in time 70 million years ago, it would be shallowed by the ocean. In fact the ocean was 300 feet higher then today. At 22,000 year, it would be covered in ice sheets 2 miles high. This movie basically combined two point in geological history.
2:32 he’s not wrong. Remember in Independence Day where David’s boss was stuck in traffic in his car as the aliens fire their space laser. And he was caught in the fire wave. Also I know hailstones can get up to grapefruit sized. (Just recently there was a massive storm in my region and Calgary (a city) got baseball sized hail) but grapefruit type stones would need the perfect conditions.
If I had not gone into the geo world,it would have been meteorology. That is my first love. For a dramatic film,it was entertaining enough to think of something this wild to happen in our life time...
On the giant hail, given normal stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere temperatures you’d need massive updraft, but as we are seeing recently, the sudden drastic cooling of these layers has resulted in smaller updrafts in smaller storms maintaining and producing large hail. So given the theory of the movie sudden upper atmospheric cooling would drastically lower the altitude required to produce large hail. Still the gallon jug sized hail is a stretch I hope. Oh what is your opinion on the paper from, I think University of San Diego, stating that latest research shows “the Day After Tomorrow” style sudden severe storms and cooling not only has happened multiple times, but has likelihood of happening again soon?
How did I not find this for years? Also... fun fact: the National Weather Service office is not in a high rise in Los Angeles, but north in the city of Oxnard. I always cringed when I saw him refer to himself as in the weather service.
Here in Oklahoma I have seen baseball sized hail and if you was outside, it could definitely knock a grown man out . With the right storm, I think its possible to get basketball sized hail. The winds wouod have to be hundreds of mph though right? I swear I've heard old stories of basketball sized hail before in the southern part of the Midwest.
What stood out to me was the cold air in the "eye" descending so fast and freezing objects instantly. With the air subsiding so quickly, shouldn't that air actually be warming up significantly? Might that have been a major flaw?
That was based on creatures that were found flash-frozen. They still had food in their bellies suggesting it went from temperate to subzero in a few hours. The movie exaggerated it a bit but it was made to scare people into taking the threat seriously.
The air up in the troposphere is super cooled. The rotation of the storm is pulling that downwards. But the storm is spinning so fast and the air is descending so rapidly that the air doesn't have time to warm up
The seismometer was acting the way it was probably because of the violent shaking of the building they were in because the tornado was in the process of hitting it. I know many things are unrealistic, but for me, I just love good disaster movies, realistic or not. 😂 Those hailstone are actually realistic, simply because I've heard of that one South Dakota story where there was an 8 inch hailstone. Since the Earth was undergoing a major shift in its climate (fast for the sake of keeping the movie's pace good), that storm in Japan was probably similar to the South Dakota storm, but even stronger with more grapefruit-sized hail. Heyyyyy, Twister was great, and it had a lot of meteorological facts.

If u would have noticed that the buildings in the freezing scene some glass break and some didnt and in the tornado scene the tornado u see going away was a different tornado not the same one

But then there are the classics like Twister and Day after Tomorrow where the story kinda makes you forgive the weather mistakes. So I guess it all depends on the story the movie tells 😄 Maybe we should start imagining all of these in an alternate universe
Of course you've never seen anywhere on earth that could freeze instantly, it's a movie. In the movie they said the cold air was descending out the troposphere.
There have been a handful of very very weak spin-ups in LA in recorded history but they are extremely rare and they are nothing like a stereotypical tornado that you’d see in Oklahoma or Kansas or movies. The dry weather conditions in LA physically are not right for creating tornadoes
maybe it is possible in the NYC flood scene if storm surge and tsunami combine cause it's raining.. underground/under water ground earthquake causes the tsunami
The whole tornado scene with tornadoes merging, tornadoes ripping reinforced steel buildings apart and the seismograph going off, most of its just Hollywood. Location, people being able to stand in what could be 200 mile an hour plus winds and what not. And although tornadoes can produce some seismic waves, they are not linked to earthquakes (earthquakes being geological and tornadoes weather). I think they just used that graph scene for the drama. The only thing that does happen is tornadoes dissipating extremely suddenly, and flying helicopters near tornadoes. Also this situation has happened in real life. Fresh water dumped into the ocean from Greenland melting caused, specifically Europe, to go into a mini ice age, not in our lifetime obviously. I also appreciate something that movies always get wrong. They didn't make the tsunami wave "crest" like a regular beach wave, and instead opted for the wall of water look. Also new York is sinking at the same rate, and a little bit faster I think actually, then Venice, so floods being more common over the next 40 to 80 years I see being more likely (not lady liberty doing the ice bucket challenge though). But I can see this happening again with the way ice caps are melting. Not cold hurricanes and liquid nitrogen descending mist, but a mini ice age. 2 comfort disaster movies that I reccomend that you might not have watched are Arctic Blast (2010) and Volcano (1997). Some cheesy good Hollywood an Australian, disasters.

I was thinking about the tsunami, and what if a meteorite the size of the Chicxulub crater hit the ocean in the right area? Crazily, we came close in Ottawa, Canada in 2018. They were a little more spread out than that but 6 simultaneous tornadoes hit the city. Then, in May of this year we had a derecho (an extremely rare weather event that happens on land but with hurricane force winds - like class 4, 190km/h) that caused apocalyptic damage. I was looking of Wikipedia and half the photos were taken a block from my house on Merivale Road near Viewmount where the damage was insane - worthy of a movie. 13 days with no power, no internet, and the first few days, no cell either. No gas stations, no fuel, streets were filled with downed uprooted trees and down power poles snapped like twigs. Could only move on foot. As crazy as this film seems, it was almost prophetic for us as we are getting those kinds of whether event. Not Arctic hurricane yet, but I shouldn't say that lest it happens, lol!
The movie was good though it could have been a bit more accurate. At the beginning it says the weather is changing beacsue the current in the ocean changed due to there being more fresh water than salt throwing it off balance.
I’m surprised you didn’t immediately criticise the depiction of a storm surge and why the filmmakers chose to make it look more like a tsunami. Storm surges are spread out over the area of low pressure in a storm, it’s like a real gradual raising of water, or comparatively gradual compared to a gigantic wave sweeping on shore.
If there was a massive tsunami, wouldn't all the coasts on the US be flooded, Florida, a chunk of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas be underwater? You guys are hilarious talking about the movie too. :)
In a scene before the wave hits, a newscast mentions the storm above North America is sending storm surges all across the eastern seaboard. And later on when Jack is discussing evacuation plans he says, "Texas, parts of Florida that aren't flooded"
It’s not a tsunami it was our planets ocean level rising over 200 feet and over taking the eastern seaboard if it was a tsunami of that size the sheer force of water pressure would have destroyed every building in its path not to mention sent the Statue of Liberty all the way to Chicago with its impact
It can happen to some degree. Where I live in Canada, I once saw the temperature go from +3 celsius and raining to -27 celsius in the span of about 6 hours.

Those hail stones look melon sized. El Reno tornado had some huge hail about grape fruit size. So maybe it’s plausible, but it would have to be a very severe storm. And for NYC flooding, with that much flooding and a tsunami, probably what could cause that would be a hurricane; outer bands of rain would soak the city and the region, causing flash flooding, then as the center of the hurricane approaches there could be a storm surge. But in order for surge to be anywhere near that size it would have to be at least a CAT5. so, then where’s all wind??? 🤔🤔🤔
Don’t they fly helicopters in Oklahoma near tornadoes? I think WOKC or one of them fly and track them. Edit…it is still a ridiculous movie, but I thought it was theoretically possible for helicopters to fly around them.

We dunno because the movie before & after wasn't shown so we don't know whether there's simultaneously and "ice age" and a hot tropical cyclone (hurricane) in NYC. Trust NYC to have the luck to get both of those at the same time. Don't forget when the AMOC slows by 15.829% it starts earthquakes and those do tsunamis.

As Dennis Quaid states, the North Atlantic Current is very fragile, and it is only a matter of time before it shuts down. Not overnight like in the movie, but like he says, "maybe in a hundred years, maybe in a thousand". And further, the superstorms pulling supercooled air from the upper atmosphere down to ground level is also happening with the "bomb cyclones". Granted, not cold enough to freeze gasoline like in the movie, but like -30 degrees F.
I remember reading a book about the Iditarod as a kid, and the author was saying that if it's cold enough, and you breathe through your mouth, you can actually freeze your throat and lungs. I thought of that in the helicopter scene when that guy freezes instantly when he opens the door.
This movie scared tf out of me when I was younger. I literally thought this was going to happen. I vividly remember seeing a big flock of birds and thinking the end was near lmfao

I dunno about tornadoes causing earthquakes but here in Kansas it's possible to get both, we had a 5.3 while out west was having a blizzard and just north and west were tornadoes, it was freaking terrifying!
The way the movie explains the supercooling is that we through our planets ecosystem so out of each that it had to find a state of equilibrium in all of this global warming so the planet creates three hurricane like storms across the planet that are so powerful that in the eye of the storm it is ripping down supercooled tropospheric air at temperatures of -150° F that rapidly supercool the surface of the planet
The thing is that the events in new york is sorta true, new york would have looked like that 70 million years ago and 22,000 years ago. If new york went back in time 70 million years ago, it would be shallowed by the ocean. In fact the ocean was 300 feet higher then today. At 22,000 year, it would be covered in ice sheets 2 miles high. This movie basically combined two point in geological history.

Also I know hailstones can get up to grapefruit sized. (Just recently there was a massive storm in my region and Calgary (a city) got baseball sized hail) but grapefruit type stones would need the perfect conditions.

If I had not gone into the geo world,it would have been meteorology. That is my first love. For a dramatic film,it was entertaining enough to think of something this wild to happen in our life time...
On the giant hail, given normal stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere temperatures you’d need massive updraft, but as we are seeing recently, the sudden drastic cooling of these layers has resulted in smaller updrafts in smaller storms maintaining and producing large hail. So given the theory of the movie sudden upper atmospheric cooling would drastically lower the altitude required to produce large hail. Still the gallon jug sized hail is a stretch I hope. Oh what is your opinion on the paper from, I think University of San Diego, stating that latest research shows “the Day After Tomorrow” style sudden severe storms and cooling not only has happened multiple times, but has likelihood of happening again soon?

Here in Oklahoma I have seen baseball sized hail and if you was outside, it could definitely knock a grown man out . With the right storm, I think its possible to get basketball sized hail. The winds wouod have to be hundreds of mph though right? I swear I've heard old stories of basketball sized hail before in the southern part of the Midwest.

What stood out to me was the cold air in the "eye" descending so fast and freezing objects instantly. With the air subsiding so quickly, shouldn't that air actually be warming up significantly? Might that have been a major flaw?
That was based on creatures that were found flash-frozen. They still had food in their bellies suggesting it went from temperate to subzero in a few hours.
The movie exaggerated it a bit but it was made to scare people into taking the threat seriously.
The air up in the troposphere is super cooled. The rotation of the storm is pulling that downwards. But the storm is spinning so fast and the air is descending so rapidly that the air doesn't have time to warm up

The seismometer was acting the way it was probably because of the violent shaking of the building they were in because the tornado was in the process of hitting it.
I know many things are unrealistic, but for me, I just love good disaster movies, realistic or not. 😂
Those hailstone are actually realistic, simply because I've heard of that one South Dakota story where there was an 8 inch hailstone. Since the Earth was undergoing a major shift in its climate (fast for the sake of keeping the movie's pace good), that storm in Japan was probably similar to the South Dakota storm, but even stronger with more grapefruit-sized hail.
Heyyyyy, Twister was great, and it had a lot of meteorological facts.

😂😂 Glad you enjoyed the video! In answer to your question, it depends on the movie. Some are just absolutely terrible and there’s no way to turn off the meteorologist switch haha. But then there are the classics like Twister and Day after Tomorrow where the story kinda makes you forgive the weather mistakes. So I guess it all depends on the story the movie tells 😄 Maybe we should start imagining all of these in an alternate universe

Forgive me I’m Australian and we don’t really get tornadoes here but do tornadoes not happen often in Los Angeles?
There have been a handful of very very weak spin-ups in LA in recorded history but they are extremely rare and they are nothing like a stereotypical tornado that you’d see in Oklahoma or Kansas or movies. The dry weather conditions in LA physically are not right for creating tornadoes
maybe it is possible in the NYC flood scene if storm surge and tsunami combine cause it's raining.. underground/under water ground earthquake causes the tsunami
The whole tornado scene with tornadoes merging, tornadoes ripping reinforced steel buildings apart and the seismograph going off, most of its just Hollywood. Location, people being able to stand in what could be 200 mile an hour plus winds and what not. And although tornadoes can produce some seismic waves, they are not linked to earthquakes (earthquakes being geological and tornadoes weather). I think they just used that graph scene for the drama. The only thing that does happen is tornadoes dissipating extremely suddenly, and flying helicopters near tornadoes. Also this situation has happened in real life. Fresh water dumped into the ocean from Greenland melting caused, specifically Europe, to go into a mini ice age, not in our lifetime obviously. I also appreciate something that movies always get wrong. They didn't make the tsunami wave "crest" like a regular beach wave, and instead opted for the wall of water look. Also new York is sinking at the same rate, and a little bit faster I think actually, then Venice, so floods being more common over the next 40 to 80 years I see being more likely (not lady liberty doing the ice bucket challenge though). But I can see this happening again with the way ice caps are melting. Not cold hurricanes and liquid nitrogen descending mist, but a mini ice age. 2 comfort disaster movies that I reccomend that you might not have watched are Arctic Blast (2010) and Volcano (1997). Some cheesy good Hollywood an Australian, disasters.

I was thinking about the tsunami, and what if a meteorite the size of the Chicxulub crater hit the ocean in the right area? Crazily, we came close in Ottawa, Canada in 2018. They were a little more spread out than that but 6 simultaneous tornadoes hit the city. Then, in May of this year we had a derecho (an extremely rare weather event that happens on land but with hurricane force winds - like class 4, 190km/h) that caused apocalyptic damage. I was looking of Wikipedia and half the photos were taken a block from my house on Merivale Road near Viewmount where the damage was insane - worthy of a movie. 13 days with no power, no internet, and the first few days, no cell either. No gas stations, no fuel, streets were filled with downed uprooted trees and down power poles snapped like twigs. Could only move on foot. As crazy as this film seems, it was almost prophetic for us as we are getting those kinds of whether event. Not Arctic hurricane yet, but I shouldn't say that lest it happens, lol!

The movie was good though it could have been a bit more accurate. At the beginning it says the weather is changing beacsue the current in the ocean changed due to there being more fresh water than salt throwing it off balance.

I’m surprised you didn’t immediately criticise the depiction of a storm surge and why the filmmakers chose to make it look more like a tsunami.
Storm surges are spread out over the area of low pressure in a storm, it’s like a real gradual raising of water, or comparatively gradual compared to a gigantic wave sweeping on shore.

In a scene before the wave hits, a newscast mentions the storm above North America is sending storm surges all across the eastern seaboard. And later on when Jack is discussing evacuation plans he says, "Texas, parts of Florida that aren't flooded"
It’s not a tsunami it was our planets ocean level rising over 200 feet and over taking the eastern seaboard if it was a tsunami of that size the sheer force of water pressure would have destroyed every building in its path not to mention sent the Statue of Liberty all the way to Chicago with its impact

It can happen to some degree. Where I live in Canada, I once saw the temperature go from +3 celsius and raining to -27 celsius in the span of about 6 hours.

Those hail stones look melon sized. El Reno tornado had some huge hail about grape fruit size. So maybe it’s plausible, but it would have to be a very severe storm.
And for NYC flooding, with that much flooding and a tsunami, probably what could cause that would be a hurricane; outer bands of rain would soak the city and the region, causing flash flooding, then as the center of the hurricane approaches there could be a storm surge. But in order for surge to be anywhere near that size it would have to be at least a CAT5. so, then where’s all wind??? 🤔🤔🤔

The tsunami is more like storm surge, a massive storm surge caused by the three massive weather systems in the northern hemisphere.
The ocean temperatures rose in the film, which triggered a earth cooling system. And so If is watched the movie, you would know it.
The classic ice age caused by heating then. This is why I always tell the Missus we shouldn't turn the house heat up too much, could ice up the house.
Don’t they fly helicopters in Oklahoma near tornadoes? I think WOKC or one of them fly and track them. Edit…it is still a ridiculous movie, but I thought it was theoretically possible for helicopters to fly around them.

UK freezes over as it is at the same latitude as north Alaska, I think.

We dunno because the movie before & after wasn't shown so we don't know whether there's simultaneously and "ice age" and a hot tropical cyclone (hurricane) in NYC. Trust NYC to have the luck to get both of those at the same time. Don't forget when the AMOC slows by 15.829% it starts earthquakes and those do tsunamis.
