- Here are all 8 endings to "It's a Super Spectacular Day" This was on an old record in an issue of MAD that played a different ending each time you played it!
You're on your own with the lyrics!
(Actually you can find them here!)
barrygoldberg.n...
You just made my day! My parents didn't think that 12 year old girls should be reading MAD, but lucky for me, I had the best grandma in the world & she would buy them for me and let me keep them at her apartment.
You had one groovy granny growing up!
I still have the original plastic record.
I listened to this incessantly as a kid, and I just found my copy of the record. It still plays, but when it gets to the end, it gets hung. But yes, I too was amazed that I still remembered every word of the chorus like it was yesterday!
Thank you for posting this fond nostalgia. My cousins would play this record and make their own sad lyrics to it, like... your just not a fan of godzilla, rodan but a big lizard foot drops in front of your van, and you split out the back to avoid the attack, and she's looking at you like your some kind of snack, and you cry like a nut, as you drop down her gut, and then sadly admit as you pop out her but - that it's NOT such a super spectacular day!
+Arthur Cabral - That's genius! Your cousins should have written for Mad. That's way funnier than any of the 8 on the record.
omg
bravo!
I bought a turntable last night just for the pleasure of playing my 45rpm "Mystery Magazine Record" for the first time in 30+ years. Still plays all the mysterious endings after all those years in storage. Thanks for posting - I didn't keep the magazine, just the record. It was fun to see the cover again after all these years.
I started going insane about half way through but had to finish it.Actually I BEGGED my mom to buy this for me when I was a kid,I can still hear my dad yelling"ENOUGH OF THAT DAMN RECORD ALLREADY!!!"Great memories thanks for posting.
I haven't heard this since I was 10 years old!!! I'm 46 years old now and remember the words!!! (Talk about obsessed!!!)
lol
me too lol, how the hell did it play different endings? always puzzled me that.
+ ScoopDogg1867-It was composed of 8 sets of grooves side by side, instead of 1. If you took the circumference of the record and divided it into 8 equal portions, each point would be where each individual groove would begin and if that's the spot you set down the needle, that's the version you heard. In fact if you watched the needle's movement across he surface of the record as it played, it would move inward to the end of the record impossibly fast, because with each rotation of the record the needle traveled 8 sets of grooves inward, instead of one. I used to have this one too, but somehow managed to accidentally throw it away around 1985 and haven't heard it since. It really takes me back to hear it again. I'll have to see if I can find a copy on Ebay.
Thnx for that. Vinyl beats CD on that one eh! If you download an app called "tubemate" it lets you download TH-cam videos to mp4 or just the sound from a video to mp3 if that's all you wanted. I use it all the time.
+ScoopDogg1867- Thank you for the advice. But I already have my own methods of saving videos and sound from TH-cam, so I actually could do that anyway. But I'm a sucker for having the real deal. Nothing like physically holding something in your hands. That's why I prefer the analog world to the digital. Digital deals only with data. It has little to do with things of any physical substance. The tubemate idea is still one I'll look into. Thank you again.
Great memories of HOURS hunched over a small Fisher-Price record player laughing my head off and trying to hear all the different endings - I still must have this mag/album somewhere...
The record was made of flimsy plastic and was square, not round. Using basic math skills, I found that you could number the corners and sides of the square with a white grease pencil and drop the needle on the right spot to hear each ending.
this song has been in my head for like 30 years!! now it will be there for life...thanks alot :)
i loved this! to this day ive'd hummed this and remebered this MAD MAG issue and record....I am so glad i can hear it again.....Thank goodness for you and youtube!
Me and a friend have bin looking for this for 31 years ! what a super spectacular day !
thanks
OMG... I had this record in 1980, I think it got ripped or something but I always wanted to find this...
thank you!
WOW
I was 11 when this came out. It's really incredible how well done the music is and how funny all the lyrics are. Well, not surprising really, this was Mad Magazine in its prime.
Wow this brings back memories....I had this mag and the record for years....I made a cassette tape in those days trying to get all the verses....there's one on here i've never heard !!
I had this and did, in fact, hear all the endings back in the day! I'd always drop the needle right before the different endings part and see what would come up. When a repeat would happen I'd just do it again till I heard them all.
Haven't heard this since I was 9 or 10 when I got this issue of Mad. Weird thing is even though I hadn't heard it again until now, I would still get this tune in my head every now and again.
Thanks for posting this.
This was a "secret spiral" record, in which the grooves from all eight versions of the song were pressed onto the "soundsheet" at the same time. Depending on where you "dropped" the needle at the start, you heard a different version each time because of the way the grooves were spaced.
I remember dropping the needle in different spots to skip to different endings ... but I always got "You developed a twitch and a horrible itch ..."
too cool, also have not heard this in decades. Thanks for posting the complete recording.
That was the day when magazines were "GREAT"!!! and they gave you FOREVER memories!
I got this Mad when it was new, and spent HOURS trying to hear all 8 different endings.
Thanks for posting this!! I played it for my mom and she started to sing along immediately because of how many times she had to hear this when I was a kid. I lost my copy somewhere down the road and this brought back some great memories. Thanks again for posting!!
THANK YOU! for finding and sharing this with us!
Wow, I haven't heard this in over 30 years since I scratched up my original record in an attempt to hear all versions. (I remember the original record being on very flimsy plastic.) I just decided to do a Google search on a whim, and low and behold, I found this. I love the Internet!
I had this as an earworm ... 40 years later ... remembered almost all of the words, but had to find this to prove to my co-workers that I'm not making this stuff up.
wow! right on...I had this one and the Graduation day...I still remember most of the words to this...
i loved this record when i was a kid. you almost piddled yourself with excitement wondering what was going to follow "untiiiilllll....." good times.
I have been searching for this for 33 years!!! God bless you for posting this! AWESOME!!!!
You may add me to the list of weirdos that hasn't heard this in almost 40 years, but still remembers damned near all of the words. :-) Thanks for uploading this!! Good memories!
After all these years, I've still got it memorized! (only a few of the endings, though)
Scary isn't it?
I love it. Thanks a lot for posting this its cool as hell.
I remember having this record. Its probably been 40 years since I heard this last. :)
I had this record, but I wore it out. Awesome to hear it again...
Thank you, thank you for posting this. I used to have the original record as a kid and played it on my little cheap record player. Lots of memories revisited.
It starts off with one groove. Just like any typical LP ( long player ). When "untillllll!" is mentioned, the needle of the record player will enter thru one of 8 separate grooves each representing a different negative scenario.
I totally had a defective one. Mine would tend to play the "Streets all aglow with a large UFO" ending 98% of the time. So much so that I can still remember all the words to that ending -- but this is the first time I've even heard most of them! (I vaguely remember the ones about being rejected by a pretty girl and getting beat up by the mafia, now that I'm hearing them again). Thanks for posting!
Damn this brings back memories.... Thanks for posting it!
Haha. This brings back some big-time memories. I used to play this record over and over.
I remember this record... I probably still have it somewhere in storage... thanks for the memory! :)
I had this...every now and then,I still heard this in my head...
I wonder how much is the issue with the record still intact is worth?
I love this record. Serious I don't know what I did with my copy. And you have all the endings. Bonus. Thanks.
Man. I want this record. I love Mad Magazine, been reading it since I was four. No kidding - my first issue had the Ghost Busters II parody in, and Alfred as the GB icon.
Oh man, I loved this record as a kid, and this SO brings back memories...
Grinning from ear to ear much like Alfred E Neuman over hearing this. Thanks!
Loved it. Thanks for posting!
When I first saw this record it had instructions to "play it until you hear all 8" I thought for sure there would be only 7, thus driving you mad playing it over and over, but I counted the grooves before playing it to be sure, there were 8.
As many things from childhood it's not as funny as I remember, but it does bring back some good memories.
About 10 years ago I wrote MAD looking for it; I got a nice letter back on MAD stationary saying it was long gone.
This must have been a popular feature inside this Super Special, because the copy intended to be inside mine was gone (either stolen or lost in shipping). But I did have the MAD Disco record...hard to play on a tiny turntable without placing a penny on top! Ah, the days of EPs...
I LOVE IT my brother had it and still does, we used to play it all the time!!!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!
Please post all you got of MAD songs. I want to hear all of them thanks a lot for this I was looking all over for this.
hilarious! i had this one too when I was a kid. thanks for putting it together
Thanks for uploading this and bringing all of the MP3s together.
I also had a copy of this record back in 1980 when I was 10 years old. Too bad I do not have it anymore... :( It's an engineering masterpiece. I think in order to make this kind of record you have to synchronize the turntable with the recording lathe and rotate the lacquer disk 45 degrees forward for each of the eight recordings. So, if you have got one of these, hold on to it !
Fantastic. Thanks for the edit, Casey! :)
OMG, this brings back some memories. I recall dropping the needle in different places until I heard the alien abduction ending.
great nostalgia
MAD magazine is the best thing ever to be created
Someone bought this magazine for me on my 12th birthday. Wish I kept it
When it says "Until" it reminds me of Stimpy from Ren N Stimpy lol
+ScoopDogg1867-You're spot on!
And thus it reminds you of Larry Fine of The Three Stooges
I had this magazine. WOW, what a flashback.
Wow I just remembered this song
And here I am 47 something years later and I still remember the "UNNNNNNTILLLLL!!"
thank u so much for posting this.
I REMEMBER THIS!!! The rock-and-roll one was the one I remember the most---I thought it was the funniest one:):):)
I got the lyrics down pat, i used to annoy my brother singing this over and over and over again!! LOL
It's a great big beautiful, wonderful, incredible, super spectacular day
And you heart is humming with good times coming
and you've got that happy feeling things are going your way
All the bells are ring out, a little bird's singing while he sits on your window sill
Saying "Yes Siree!"
"I can surely see..
it'll plainly be..
most definitely
a super spectacular day" UNTIL....................
holy cow, I had toataly forgotten about this record, I was 10 when I first heard it. talk about a memory rush! THANK YOU !!!!
I remember seeing this issue of MAD in the grocery store back in the day. 31 years later, I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.
42 summers later
OMG!! This brings back such great childhood memories!! LMAO!!
I remember buying this issue at a newstand on the same day I went to see the movie "Roller Boogie" at the theatre.
My favorite moment with this record is when I played it a friend from school, a very brainy, intellectual kid. When I played it the second time, he kept repeating, "I heard it already. We listened to this..." I kept signaling, hang on, "but we heard this, we--- eh..." and his face changed as the ending was different, "whaaaa?"
Real 80,s
***** It came out in 1980.
It says "Copyright 1979" right on the record. Sorry, but no.
It’s a great big, beautiful, wonderful, incredible, super spectacular day
And your heart is humming with good times coming
And you got that happy feeling things are going your way
All the bells are ringing and a little bird’s singing while he sits on your windowsill
Singing yessiree, I can surely see it will plainly be most definitely
A super spectacular day!
UNNTILLL...
1:11 About quarter to five your relations arrive
And you greet cousin Beth with terrible breath
And a fat British guy who destroys your hi-fi
And your great uncle Fred who gets drunk in your bed
And your third cousin Dick who is mentally sick
And his creepy friend Joe and six more you don’t know
And you’re sure there and then as you’re shafted again…
2:01 Round seven at night you go out for a bite
The streets are aglow from a large UFO
A creature comes out with two heads and a snout
It talks like a frog and throws up on your dog
It thinks you are great and wants you for its mate
You’re sealed in a case and go flying in space
And you silently say as the Earth fades away…
2:50 You walk out the door of a dry cleaning store
And you’re grabbed by surprise by three Mafia guys
Who mistakenly think that you’re Hymie The Fink
They break your right arm and do bodily harm
And you’re writhing in pain and you try to explain
That your name is Jerome and you’re on your way home
And you let out a sigh as you’re left there to die…
3:39 A quarter past eight you pick up your blind date
And you really go ape for her fabulous shape
Of the girls that you’ve met, she’s the classiest yet
And she’s pretty and bright and it’s love at first sight
And it’s really a shame she’s not feeling the same
‘Cause she thinks you’re a shmuck and she says “lots of luck”
And you sob in despair as she gives you the air…
4:28 You’re called down in class and you feel like an ass
‘Cause you don’t have a clue, and you know that it’s due
To those classes you skipped and your fly is unzipped
And your acne has spread to the back of your head
And some jerk spreads the word that you’re some kind of nerd
And you fight in the hall and punch through a wall
And there isn’t a doubt that they’re flunking you out…
5:19 You develop a twitch and a horrible itch
And you’re covered with spots and you’re getting the trots
And your feet start to swell and it’s easy to tell
From this hideous wheeze it's some awful disease
So you call an M.D. and he says “Don’t ask me;
If it gets any worse, you can speak to my nurse."
And you manage to say as you wither away…
6:09 Your sister pours glue in her hair and blames you
And your neighbor says that you’re abusing her cat
And you just left the john with the water turned on
And the house gets all wet and your mother’s upset
And you’d die if you knew what your dad’s gonna do
And your python gets loose and you know it’s no use
And you cry there in fear and it’s now very clear…
6:58 You go out for a spin and the sunroof caves in
And the steering wheel shakes so you slam on the brakes
And the gears get all stuck as you sideswipe a truck
And you run out of gas while you’re trying to pass
And you’re stalled on the tracks and you try to relax
But a train’s coming through and it’s heading for you
And you have a quick flash as you brace for the crash….
…that it’s not such a super spectacular day!
thanks for letting me be 12 years old again
i like the super spectacular day one
Wow. Haven't heard this in 20+ years.
reminds me of autumn 2009 where i got my first american MAD magazine
Thanks For Posting This, Never Thought I Would Here This Again. :-)
I had this! Love it! Thanks!
Thanks, I was hoping I wouldn't have to dig mine up to digitize it.
I still have the original record. Still in good condition
This is awesome, thanks you.
I still have this record.
I don't think the 7th one played very often. Weird hearing this after 35+ something years.
I got this magazine for my 12th birthday from a friend. Wish Had kept it and the floppy record.
Finally found it. This is burned into my brain.
I used to have This!!!!!!
I like the "hit by a train" one the best.
If only the cast of MADtv could have done sketches based on this record...
@VileOgre i think the singers (acording to wikipedia) is the Brooklyn-based comedy duo Alto and Mantia (bobby alto and buddy mantia)
@VileOgre your welcome i actully like the singer in this song too and thats why i keep listening to it XD i cant control myself sometimes also it wakes memories
@jake6644 It depended on where the needle was dropped. It actually had 8 different grooves...
Thanks for the lyrics link...and the laffs!
good memories
I 😍 MAD magazine
Got this record, thanks for posting :-) and is it on CD ?
Thanks a lot! I just found my record but nowhere to play it, thanks for the memories :D
dude Super Spectacular Day, haven't not heard this since i was like 10 years old
I still have it.
I still quite this record until this day.
I miss my copy.
A CD doesn't defeat the purpose if your CD player is on random.
Mine only had one ending. Only in Canada eh. But longer.
Round sleep at night you go out for a bite.
The streets are all cold from a launched UFO.
A creature comes out with two heads and a snout.
It croaks like a frog and throws up on your dog.
It thinks you are great and wants you for its mate.
And you silently say as you go flying in space.
That its not such a super spectacular day.
I have it and I listened to it last night
