Hi, what colors do you run out fast and stock more? An art shop in our neighbourhood is on sale and would like to buy more of the tubes. Any recommendations?
When I was starting out with watercolour I had decision fatigue with what paint yo buy so I bought the exact colours you use and a year and half later I ve only had to add 2 extra colours. Thanks so much for sharing tips and advice that has saved me so much time and money 🙏
Hi Jenna. I LOVE your videos. I wanted to share a trick that worked great for me when I first set up my pallet. In order to get rid of the smooth coating on my plastic I used a baking soda and water paste. I lightly scrubbed my whole pallet including the paint wells and dried it thoroughly with paper towels. I hit it with the hair dryer for just a minute to make sure there was no moisture anywhere and then put my paints in. It worked like a charm.💖
I love that you do rainbow order, because that's how I do all of my colors with watercolor, pencil, etc. Thank you for this! I'm currently working on a new palette so this is so helpful.
I discovered your channel last night. I have never used watercolor and you explain and demonstrate everything very well. I’m waiting for my supplies that are due Wednesday. Just putting brush to paper is my goal this year. Thank you.
It's quite interesting to see how people are setting up their palettes. I was setting up mine: black (or paynes grey), earth tones and then the rainbow order starting with yellow. I washed my palette with soal and used a magic eraser to prep. (I don't have any glue sticks anymore and this was the only option I had.)
After working from a real mishmash of colours & brands over this past year, my hubby gifted me with your palette yesterday (early Mother's Day gift in early April now) and have had to order some tubes that were unavailable. Super excited and SO SO appreciative of this tutorial today! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 👏🏻 Wonderful video, Jenna! Got my 'flowers' book last week and just love it too!! 💜❤️💜
I don't normally comment, but thank you so much for the glue stick trick! It was beading so bad and it made me not want to use it. Plus some of the paint was just dropping out of the wells! I did the gluestick trick and cleaned the palette out and it worked perfectly!
I just bought a palette the same as your new one this week, but I was holding off setting it up paint wise, and then you posted this video! Thanks Jenna! :D
Good information all around, particularly letting paint dry. This would allow one to travel with a palette using carry on luggage. Given travel may be within our grasp again I'm glad to know this.
Jenna! How perfect is this! I just bought the watercolor palette that you link in your description and was just thinking "Gee, I better think about this carefully before I just start squirting paints into these little cubbies!" How are you a mind reader right now LOL
Jenna thank you so much for putting out all these videos, they are invaluable! I was getting so discouraged then discovered one of your videos a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been in love with watercolor painting since. I ordered one of your books and I can’t wait to dive in. Thanks again, what a blessing you’ve been to me.
Aw Debbie! That comment warms my heart. I am so glad that I could encourage you and help you out in a time when you were feeling discouraged. Thank you for your sweet comment and for your support!! ❤️
I like to pre-prep my palettes (plastic and enamel coated metal) by scuffing them with #0000 steel wool, rinse the dust off then use a disposable eraser cleaning pad on them. The eraser helps remove any oils from the surface. When finished, what I have is a dull satin finish on the surface. I do this in both the paint wells and mixing trays.
Great tutorial on how to set up the palette. I saw at 1:50 that you mention that this isn't available. Just an FYI, they sell them at BLICK, I only know as I just picked up three of them. They are great palettes, as they have the sloping wells, that I happen to like and plenty of room for color loading. Thanks for sharing your wisdom as always.🧡✨🧡
OMG - I had a dream about needing to know how to set up a palette. How fascinating you posted this video today. Love your shorter hair! Just received your book from Amazon. I can't wait to get started!!!!
Hi Jenna - curious how you manage or upkeep your mixing wells. Do you clean them out with a paper towel periodically or not worry about it and mix new colors using what is already there? Just thinking about times you want really clean and bright colors. Thx!
All the colours are soooo satisfying 🎨💛🧡❤️💚💙💗💜🖤 Yeah I prefer pastels like lilac instead of “purple” 🤪, I’ve never tried ultramarine violet, Instead, I have ultramarine blue and mix pretty purples with opera rose
I took your workshop in Chicago a few years ago. I use your same setup and paint recomndations to this day! You also taught me to not be so "type A" with keeping my wells perfect. One of the best tips I've received on jumping from color to color.
Hey hey! I had a similar pallet and used paints from the tube as well - I let them dry and noticed once they were dry they would actually chip off and huge chunks if not all the paint once dried would fall out, any tips to prevent this?? ♥️🙏🏽✌🏽
Make a paste out of baking soda and water lightly scrub your pallet and paint making sure to get the corners. Rinse well and dry with a paper towel. I hit it with my blow dryer after just to make sure there was no residual moisture. This will remove the shiny finish thus allowing our paint to adhere to your pallets.🥰
Oohhh my word, I'm so glad I decided to read the comments and haven't filled my new palette, yet! As always, I had buffed the mixing wells of my new plastic palette (it's exactly like Jenna's old one in this video with the 24 wells), but I didn't buff the paint wells (I'm finally making a "permanent" travel palette after 3 years of working out of welled mixing palettes w/ little dollops of what ever paint I needed for the piece). I don't care too terribly much if the "globs" of paint fall out *if* the entire palette is dry (though, a pain to reorganize!), but I'm glad to know there's a way to keep those dried paints in the wells when I've wet other paints and need to pick up and go. I know I could clean a wet color off the dried "globs," but not easily like cakes of pigment, and I don't want to lose any precious paint! Whew. Near-miss! 🥰
Thank you, Jenna!!! After paints are placed in the palette, do you close it? How long do I wait until it's time to paint? Your video is concise, and wonderful!! Thank you!😘👍💖🎨
I just watch your video I'm a newbie and you were so informative that I'm going to subscribe to your Channel and watch more of your tutorials thank you so much
Re: paint beading up on a new palette - I tried using a fingernail buffer and it seems to have worked well. It was a cushy file that feels velvety smooth, not gritty like sandpaper. The different brands would call it different things, so I don't want to give specifics. I tried it first on the little area near the thumb hole that Jenna shows - I figured that I probably wouldn't use that for mixing much, so if I ruined it, no loss. It worked, so I lightly buffed all the mixing wells. Hope this tip can help someone! I love this channel! I'm new to watercolors and learning so much! Jenna's color sense is a lot similar to mine. :-)
Hi Jenna, Im new to painting with watercolour, could you please tell me which colour water jar would I use when I use my brown or black paints. Im trying to use your suggestion of one jar for warm colour paints and one for cool colour paints, and Im not sure what black or brown would be considered?
How do you keep all of the other combinations that you've pulled out into your tray from getting into your new paint that you choose. Do you have to wipe it clean every time?
Hi I’m just getting into water colour painting and am loving all the clear instructions that you are giving us. I have 1 question about this video. You say that you don’t really like the purple and that you don’t really use it. So it begs the question, why have you included it in your pallet? Thanks again, I’ve learned a lot !!!
Hey Ann, I'm so glad you're loving the tutorials! Although it's my least favorite color, I still recognize I need to use it sometimes. Some paintings may just need a touch of purple. Also, I do a lot of product designs for different companies and I have to follow color palettes they provide (which may include purple).
Thanks for this helpful video, I have thought about how to set up a palette, and like You said my idea was to do it like rainbow. So, it will be my mission, cause I noticed I wanna mix m6 own colours and don’t need all the ones I bought. Not that I throw them, but I won’t replace them, and I wanna set up a travel palette and then I wanna do it in this order.
Great information!!! I have way too many watercolors of all colors and brands. I am a WC addict LOL attracted to many colors and though I do mix some colors I am not quite adept at it. I think I would be a much better watercolor artist if I had stuck with a limited palette like this of 12 colors and worked from there. I like all my choices but it does get overwhelming.
Thank you - lots of good tips. However, why do you have a different palette with more and different colors right next to the new one? I found it confusing all through the video, and, why didn't you choose that one with more colors?
good video :-). I'm a little confused about the order of the colors. The order you wanted to do is roy g biv. Why is scarlet red on the outside and not exchanged for opera rose? The scarlet is more of a red than opera rose and could therefore be better placed next to orange than opera rose. Why is the turquoise between violet and cerulean? it would be more logical for me if it were between Prussian blue and permanent sap green, because it would be the greenest blue in your palette and fit better between these two colors than between violet and cerulean.
Your showed us a plastic pallet but referenced a porcelain pallet for your desk. Would recommend a porceline pallet for home use? I have small ones but wonder if investing in a larger one would be productive.
Thank you, Jenna, that was super helpful. I have a pretty good grasp of things by now (a lot thanks to your videos!) but organizing a palette has been frustrating for me. I feel overwhelmed by all the colors & I know the pros say you don't need all 200k colors, but this makes me feel more secure about which ones to focus on. I already have about half! 👍
Thank you! This is exactly the direction I needed. I've kind of been winging it since I started and the advice and instruction in your videos has been invaluable.
Hi, I'm New to your videos and I'm loving them so much. When creating the palette with colors, I have the 28 well palette. After putting in paint do you leave open overnight to dry then use? Will paint be hard?
This is a very helpful video! I was wondering about cleaning the palette. Do you ever clean out the colors have mixed, or do you leave it there? Thank you!
Love your colors and palette. I have already copied your set up, ... I think, and it works well. Truth: I do have other palettes; however, I do love the colors you use. I think I may have used toothpaste to get rid of the slickness of the plastic. Thanks for your helpful hints. I'll try the glue stick.
Not a palette question, a paint question. I was silly and bought my Prussian blue in a pan. It is set so hard I can barely get it to reset the colour is so weak and the little bit I could get going had flakes in the pigment. Any tips to reset a stubborn colour?
Thank you for this! I set up my first watercolor palette exactly this way and have been loving it. And for the first time, I need add more paint to some of the wells. Do you wait until you've used up all the paint or can you add to the rim that's left? Thank you!
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you. I have issues with the beading AFTER I prepped the wells with a glue stick on each mixing well. This is frustrating because I certainly don't know what to do to alleviate this problem. Does this not work if the glue stick is too old?
Hi Jenna! Very helpful video, thank you! Could you please explain why did you choose Lemon Yellow Deep from all the yellows available? I haven't seen this colour before in other artists palettes. Is it really granulating as described on Jackson's Art site? Many thanks in advance!
Hi Jenna! Super helpful video :) What is the name of the bright blue color you have in your other palette (well #7 from the top left)? I think you mentioned in (several of) your other videos that it's Pthalo Turquoise, but the Pthalo Turquoise you're squeezing out of the tube in this video is a different color.
Hi Jeena, I am a big admirer of you. I did follow your order of filling the pallette but mine doesn't haveva cover. Is that ok. Please let me know so I can go ahead and fill my pallette and get ready. Take care of yourself and Myles and John.
Perhaps there's an earlier comment, but I'll ask anyway. How do I remember the paint colors (names) as time goes by especially when you tossed out the tube.
Hey Kevin! They're all the same colors that I talked about in this video, just a variety of different mixes together. There are two greens in my palette from a long time ago that I don't use anymore (Olive Green and Winsor Green) and there is one NEW color that I started using after this palette video, that's Manganese Blue: amzn.to/3sqOcsc -- hope that helps!
So I finally got my pallet and colors you suggested. I was SO excited. I put my colors in just like you said in this video. I felt so accomplished, And then ..... I realized I forgot to do the glue stick 🤦♀️ can I still do it with the paint already in the pans? Also, when the paint is dry is it like rock hard or hard but a tiny bit squishy? I'm a total newbie so idk this stuff. I'm dying to play but trying to wait on it all to dry.
Hey Crystal, you'll be totally fine! I never use the glue stick technique, personally. I know it works so I shared that in the video, but I break in my palette the good old fashioned way -- just by using it! Haha. Keep painting and mixing paints around, and it should break it just fine. Also, yes, the paint will dry pretty hard. You don't HAVE to wait for it to dry -- it just helps it last longer because when you use the paint wet, you'll tend to grab more than you need. When you activate the dried paint with water, you take less on your brush.
Any recommendations for dried paint in the palette that keeps cracking/breaking? My burnt umber breaks into tiny pieces...I’ve tried “gluing” it back into place with a dab of paint fresh from the tube. But that too then cracks and breaks up.
Ya that happens with burnt umber... just keeping adding water and adding paint, and it’ll eventually stick. Unfortunately, I don’t have any magic tips for that one...
you could try to add some honey or glycerine to that cracking paint. Honey/glycerin will attract moisture from the air so the paint wont dry so dry it cracks. but dont add too much or it wont dry even on the paper. (and too much honey could attract bees too xD)
Super helpful Jenna! One quick question. What is your opinion on tubes vs pans? It seems difficult for me to get professional level Winsor and Newton tubes where I live but lots of options on pan sets. Thanks for your thoughts :)
My quick thoughts are that I prefer tubes because I get to pick my colors and have control over when to refill... with that said, I am a proper of quality supplies AND for people to find what they personally love! You may find you liked some pans and that’s perfectly good for you!
Jenna , what color is the light blue in your palette. You didn’t mention it. It’s in your larger palette 🎨 Think you have two wells of it ? It’s a pretty color. Thx for all you info. So grateful 😍
Swatch this dried phthalo turquoise next to the light one in the palette that people are confused about- I promise, you’ll see what we mean! :) Happy Sunday!
Hey! If you are referring to the 7th dish down in my well-used palatte (the kind of brighter blue), that's phthalo turqoise. I know that does NOT look like it, but it is a very old paint that I put in my palette long ago and W&N no longer makes it this light. I am currently testing out Manganese Blue (which you can actually see in the night sky video -- it's one of the last blues I use in the sky, before I paint the trees) as a supplement. I hope this clears it up! 😊
@@JennaRaineyChannel thanks very much for explaining! It really is appreciated. I purchased cobalt turq light & will spring for a mang. blue hue so that I can paint just like Jenna! :):)
Let me know if this was helpful and if you have any other questions! Thanks for watching!❤️
It was definitely helpful! It's sad that the palette is almost $40 CAD haha! 🤣🤣 Looking forward to new videos from you! 💕
Very helpful! If you like working with dry paint, why do you opt for letting tube paint go dry rather that using the pan paints?
Yes this helped a lot thanks 😊
Hi, what colors do you run out fast and stock more? An art shop in our neighbourhood is on sale and would like to buy more of the tubes. Any recommendations?
I found that really helpful thankyou and weirdly therapeutic so much so that I watched it twice 😊
When I was starting out with watercolour I had decision fatigue with what paint yo buy so I bought the exact colours you use and a year and half later I ve only had to add 2 extra colours. Thanks so much for sharing tips and advice that has saved me so much time and money 🙏

Im surely gonna try this. cz i tried soo many things like, mix it w powder, sand paper it and it didnt work out. Thank u for the tips
I’ve used soft scrub with a toothbrush and just gentle scrub. I’ll have to try baking soda!
I like how the orange just settled in like it was home.
I love that you do rainbow order, because that's how I do all of my colors with watercolor, pencil, etc. Thank you for this! I'm currently working on a new palette so this is so helpful.

Those are awesome tips!!

Glad you like it!

Perfect timing!!
Good information all around, particularly letting paint dry. This would allow one to travel with a palette using carry on luggage. Given travel may be within our grasp again I'm glad to know this.
So satisfying to watch paint getting squeezed out from the tube! 😅 I will try the glue stick hack. Thank you! 😁
Truly learned more about making my Palette individual. I’m trying to find what works from me and using 12 colors is a start.
Jenna! How perfect is this! I just bought the watercolor palette that you link in your description and was just thinking "Gee, I better think about this carefully before I just start squirting paints into these little cubbies!" How are you a mind reader right now LOL

Oh and purple is my favorite color 💜
No judgement here, haha, I’m glad purple gets the love!! 😂

A great refresher Jenna!

My question also!
great !!! never did watercolors before, was using wet out of tube big waste didn't know how to set up -this was fabulous!!! thank you!
All the colours are soooo satisfying 🎨💛🧡❤️💚💙💗💜🖤
Yeah I prefer pastels like lilac instead of “purple” 🤪, I’ve never tried ultramarine violet,
Instead, I have ultramarine blue and mix pretty purples with opera rose
The fresh pretty paints are so satisfying!! And ya, softer lilac is great!
Aloha Jenna what brand of glue stick are you referring to to stop beading? How do you remove the glue prior to using the palette?
I took your workshop in Chicago a few years ago. I use your same setup and paint recomndations to this day! You also taught me to not be so "type A" with keeping my wells perfect. One of the best tips I've received on jumping from color to color.

Hello! How do you keep the colors from “popping out” when you open and close the palate? Some of my colors don’t stay out once they dry?
Does the watercolors stay soft or do the harden? Hiw do i keep them from hardening? And if wet, di they spill ?
Not a palette question, a paint question. I was silly and bought my Prussian blue in a pan. It is set so hard I can barely get it to reset the colour is so weak and the little bit I could get going had flakes in the pigment. Any tips to reset a stubborn colour?
Thank you for this! I set up my first watercolor palette exactly this way and have been loving it. And for the first time, I need add more paint to some of the wells. Do you wait until you've used up all the paint or can you add to the rim that's left? Thank you!
Jenna! What brand of watercolors do you use? 🎨 Gracias.
Hi Jenna, this is so helpful thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful, Claudia! ❤️
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you. I have issues with the beading AFTER I prepped the wells with a glue stick on each mixing well. This is frustrating because I certainly don't know what to do to alleviate this problem. Does this not work if the glue stick is too old?
So glad this was helpful! Not sure about an old glue stick, but as long as it still had normal glue stick qualities, I think it’d be fine!
Hi Jenna! Very helpful video, thank you! Could you please explain why did you choose Lemon Yellow Deep from all the yellows available? I haven't seen this colour before in other artists palettes. Is it really granulating as described on Jackson's Art site? Many thanks in advance!
That was very helpful!
Great info girl. Love your work
Hi Jenna! Any good tips to prevent cracking of drying or dry pigments in the palette? 💚💛💜
So helpful, thank you! Any tips for getting ALL the paint out of the tube? Do you roll/fold the tube, cut it....???
Thank you for the video. I'll definitely try the glue stick trick because that beading phenomena irritates me
Hi Jenna! Super helpful video :) What is the name of the bright blue color you have in your other palette (well #7 from the top left)? I think you mentioned in (several of) your other videos that it's Pthalo Turquoise, but the Pthalo Turquoise you're squeezing out of the tube in this video is a different color.
Nice tip about the glue stick, colour beading has been driving me crazy!
Hi Jeena,
I am a big admirer of you. I did follow your order of filling the pallette but mine doesn't haveva cover. Is that ok.
Please let me know so I can go ahead and fill my pallette and get ready.
Take care of yourself and Myles and John.
Thank you…so helpful
Hello Jenna,
Why are you using 5-ML tubes (instead of 15 ML) when you always buy the same colours?
Perhaps there's an earlier comment, but I'll ask anyway. How do I remember the paint colors (names) as time goes by especially when you tossed out the tube.
Hi! Do you have any references to what all the colors are in your larger palette? Thanks in advance!
Thank You. That makes so much sense. 💕
So what's a good alternate for lemon yellow deep and thalo turquoise? Neither of these exist anymore in this brand.
@@JennaRaineyChannel thank you! 😊 Glad to know it’s not just me.
you could try to add some honey or glycerine to that cracking paint. Honey/glycerin will attract moisture from the air so the paint wont dry so dry it cracks.
but dont add too much or it wont dry even on the paper. (and too much honey could attract bees too xD)
yeay I am glad I found this, this is really helpful
How long does it take for the paint to dry in the wells and is this time affected by leaving the tray open Vs closed.
@@JennaRaineyChannel Thank you! This helps a lot! :)
I found the plastic pallette on Amazon 1/24/22 yay!
Do you use this Glue stick method? Sounds interesting.. thanks 🙂
I’ve done it once and it worked for me! I’ve been using the same palette now for a long time, so I don’t set up new ones often at all...
Thank you! I wondered if the glue could change any pigment texture, or hatte happens with the brushes :)
But then I will try this soon!
VERY helpful!
What made you use this type of tray/palette instead of those individual pans that can be popped in and out of palettes?
I’m a beginner searching wich colors I will have in my palette, so it was helpful. I also like the tips with gluestick, I will test it 👌🏼
Try it out! It has worked for me!

Jenna , what color is the light blue in your palette. You didn’t mention it. It’s in your larger palette 🎨 Think you have two wells of it ? It’s a pretty color. Thx for all you info. So grateful 😍
It’s next to the two yellows. Such a pretty greenish blue ?
Oh, just saw this! Haha. I got your answer in the other comment, sorry for the delay!
@@JennaRaineyChannel what is the color ?😆
It’s Winsor Green Blue Shade 👍🏻
Yes they still sell the original one you had they sell it at Blick of course I'm in Rhode Island
