I have a mixture of both military and homade MRE's. But my favorite MRE's to buy are European or Russian MRE's. My brother has a freeze dryer machine and we make alot of freeze dried meals for homade MRE's and just food for camping, fishing and hunting. I own six dehydrators alot of the stuff I grow in my garden and my small greenhouse gets canned, freeze dried or dehydrated. Another thing you can put into your homade MRE's is Ramen Soup, Sardines, Vienna Sausages, Tuna Pouches, Crisp Bread, Homemade Hardtack and Beef Jerkey. Great video don't listen to the die hard MRE snobs. They have taken in way too many government preservatives. Just have fun with this play list. You are giving alot of ideas to some people who may not have alot of money to put together some food stores some ideas.
Sounds like you’ve got a great program going there. I would love to have a freeze dryer but I’m not there with the finances yet. I love the idea of mixing all that along with military and home made MREs. It’s smart to have lots of options.
My brother bought his freeze dryer from Tractor Supply Company. It is a Harvest Right 4 Tray. It works well. We have been freeze drying Spree candy in it. Jolly Ranchers will be coming out later today
I have the same, it’s good to have a mix, I also bought some of the camping MREs as well. Haven’t tried any yet. I just started to grow veggies on my own, buying water storages, now I am trying to learning how to make my own MREs. I have kids so I need to be creative and have enough.
I love sardines. So many people hate them. More food for me, and they aren't too heavy or bulky as far as canned foods go. When it comes to freeze-driers, they seem too expensive for the average individual. I wonder how many people would consider a coop to share one. I've thought about promoting this to my local government that's been setting up community gardens and little-library style mini-food pantries and farmer's markets with SNAP/EBT payment systems. Or maybe it could be a small business, but then I worry about extra red tape and liability for foodservice related equipment and safety.
Great ideas! I would buy a big pack of dental flossers, a box of individual Wet Wipes, and a bag of compressed towel tables. That would really complete your accessory packs in the MREs your making.

I miss the little tiny bottles of hot sauce that used to be in the military MRE'S. Now I have to put packets from Taco Bell or something like that if I made an MRE.
Every once in a while I find those little bottles in different places. They are still around I’m just not sure where to get them. I might need to look into that.
@@dadbudgetadventures my dad has been to the Tabasco plant a lot over the years and has never seen them for sale so I think maybe they made runs for the military The cool part about going there is that you get to try out stuff they don't sell in the stores yet. They have Tabasco flavored ice cream.
I went to a pizza place in Scotland once, they had tons of them. I guess it was a thing over there in the 90’s. If you bought certain pizzas, you got as many little bottles as you wanted. Maybe it was more of an export item?

Costco and Sam's Club are both excellent sources for single serving packets for condiments, instant coffee packets, teabags, sweetener, sugar, etc, because restaurants and hotels go to Sam's and Costco to get that kind of stuff. Years ago, our church made comfort and sanitation kits for victims of Katrina full of useful things like small bottles of shampoo, soap, washcloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste. You could make kits like that using travel sized stuff bought in bulk that won't perish to use as trading materials or to help a person feel human again. Even if your home made MRE has self heating food pouches, don't forget to throw in a small can opener, just in case. A couple of years ago we stayed at an air bnb. We got back from Walmart with our groceries for the weekend and couldn't find a can opener anywhere in the house. I used my P-54 off my key chain until we got a better one the next morning. The P-54 is the big brother to the P-38. Once you get it going, it works fine. I've made more drinking cups out of soda cans than actually opening cans. :)
Good video DBA, My wife and I like the Propel Water Packets. Not only do they taste great, but they have Electrolytes and Vitamins to help you rehydrate and replace those electrolytes you sweated out. So it makes for a good survival drink. Love the Honey packet idea, that's great! Thanks for the tips. JT

Interesting. This concept started from my desire to build meal kits I could keep at work for days when I had limited options about eating. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos.
You can get the pill pockets, usually at a pharmacy. They are like tiny ziplock bags. Use a measuring spoon to measure out the bulk drink mix into the pill pocket. Zip them shut and they last.
my favorite water additive is Welch's (i believe) Strawberry Lemonade pkgs from the Dollar Tree (pkg of about 10). Dollar Tree has several of those types of 9pks of snacks - some are good like the cheeze-its some aren't like the oreos. i do like the other sandwich cookies variety pk they have; again i believe a nine pk and this a variety in the pkg of banana, chocolate, strawberry. i know some people don't like them however. I've never done a homemade mre persay but when going on road trips - a lunchbag per person with a ice pk and tons of snacks like the drink mix, cookies, chips, crackers, cheese and meats, jerk stick, dried fruit, carrots and ranch dressing, pickles, candy, chocolate, ectc... makes it that everyone has their own litlte "store" of snacks so we don't have to stop for snacks and sometimes not even a meal. and everyone has a really good variety to choose from in their bag.
It’s really all about preference and purpose. You gather what you like and the components change according to what kind of outing you’re on and how much prep you want to do. You can buy packs of plastic cutlery that come pre-packaged with fork, knife, napkin, salt and pepper. Sam's club has them. I would guess all the similar stores would also.
I found the honey packets when I was car camping in Tennessee at a cool state park. They are awesome on a peanut butter sandwich!! Even gave my friend some for an international flight and she was so excited! Oops! I didn’t find them at the state park. LOL. They were at Walmart when I got groceries for my trip. 🤥. Have a great week everyone!
My hubby is not much on coffee, but when he does drink a cup, he adds a pack of Swiss Miss and 3 ice cubes 😂 I just found your channel and have been binge watching, thanks for the content.
Speaking of vacuum sealers, I wonder what you think about resealing items into smaller packets from a bulk pack. How much risk would there be of contamination from a short time of exposure to atmosphere (oxygen and humidity and dust and fungal spores, etc) and how it might shorten (or possibly extend) the shelf life. Despite having T2D, I would prefer sugar sweetened beverages to artificial sweeteners that risk diarrhea in an emergency. If safe enough, wonder if the cost savings would be worth it to repackage bulk drink mixes (e.g. Gatorade, Country Time Lemonade, instant coffee, instant tea, hot chocolate, etc) into sachets made using a sealer. I also wonder if this would work well and be cost effective with other items, like peanut butter and honey. I didn't see any videos on this subject, but maybe I missed it.
I just recently came across your videos and really like what you do with homemade MRE’s! While I have official military versions this is a legitimate and fun option too. I’m going to go out and try it for myself. The granddaughters will love having a personalized “Papa’s MRE’s” on hikes or camping. Ignore the trolls and keep them coming.
Even though my palate is different, I really enjoy these videos. You have some good suggestions for making homemade MREs. Keep the faith, stay the course, and do not let the haters get you down.
Thank you. I’m having fun with this and I totally get that some people have a very different palate from mine. That’s why I love hearing people’s recommendations on what to try. Keeps me on my toes while I’m dodging trolls 😂
Another fun thing is get a good thermos and the night before add boiling water and instant milk, sweetener and oat meal, proper proportions, and in the morning you wake to hot oatmeal. Works in the morning with instant, or regular, rice for an addition to lunch. And spaghetti noodles for dinner.
My favorite coffee for camping, hiking, quick fix are Folgers coffee singles. Real coffee in a tea bag form. Just way better than any instant coffee I’ve tried. They’re individually foil wrapped so they keep for a long time. And go good with Swiss Miss hot chocolate.
For desserts you can get those bags of Halloween ot Christmas candy assortments. The small chocolate bars are good in coffee or hot cocoa. Also around the holidays you can find hot cocoa assortments that aren't available at other times.
13:52 MREs are great...if...you can find them at a reasonable price, newly produced, and have been properly stored. My experiences have been that people asked premium prices for nearly expired meals that the case indicated were stored at less than optimal conditions.
If you can find the little cups of jif peanut butter at the dollar general they are really nice to toss into a meal pk.... I make little snacky pks with my mre kits and I prep some of these for my husband to take to dialysis as on some days he doesn't have a chance to eat a full lunch before our ride arrives..... I love the honey idea it would be perfect with the peanut butter and crackers and would be a change from the packets of jelly.....i ask for two pks when I occasionally pick myself up a biscuit and coffee so i can stick them in a snacky pack.....
I haven't found an instant coffee that I like but I have found that you can get coffee in individual bags like tea. I use those a lot while out in the woods.
Liked the info about the Cafe Bustelo and Canada Dry drink mixes. Ya don't need the packs of cigarettes that came in some military rations (not MREs)! All very interesting!
Accessory packet. I purchased a package of the little dental floss and tooth pick combo. I throw one in every accessory packet, it can reel save the day with so of these foods
I drive for Amazon and I use those drink mix packets all the time. It might sound weird but my favorite ones are the Prime ones. The lemon-lime one tastes like a Popsicle. I am usually a pop drinker. Mtn dew is my go to but when I'm out on the road I really don't want to try to hydrate with that lol. Crystal lite is ok but I usually use 2. The Walmart ones are good too, I like the orange morning one is kind of like tang.
The hot cocoa & coffee idea is pretty neat, thank you! Years ago I was able to find Yoo-hoo chocolate packets I would add to my coffee at work but now I can't find them anywhere so I will definitely try that instead. I personally do also enjoy the cranberry ginger ale flavor packets in water every once in a while, not that I'm normally a Canada Dry fan, but it works when in a pinch or if you're like me & just get tired of drinking plain water most of the time. You're "Add two!", 🤓 & the make yourself happy multiple times, lol, I'll have to check out those shortbread cookies. Ty for sharing!
Your mission if you except is to buy / build an MRE from 711 or Speedway or Pilot convenient store depending on availability in your area ! Make me proud I have done it. Pilot truck stops have great selection !

Hi I’m new to your channel and you’ve really given me food for thought, and researching Mylar bags I’ve found vacuum sealable variants. Great ideas for my western hunts!
Learning a lot and enjoying your thoughts a lot. Thank you so much! These tips and trials are very much appreciated. Additionally, I believe the customization aspect and budgetary aspect of this dialog puts this effort in a new place for me.
The US military has a contract or agreement with a company that sells an electrolyte packet called Drib Drabs, kind of like they did with Rip-It's. They're going to transport pallets of bottled water, but cases of electrolyte packets are cheaper and easier to transport to leave it for the troops to put it in a bottle of water instead of hauling pallets of Gatorade. Coke owns Gatorade and they have a subsidiary of Gatorade called Propel and they sell packets of mixes for both of them, Propel being less expensive (and diabetic friendly with artificial sweetener)
Thanks for all you are doing. It's inspiring and looks fun i for one would like to see homemade mre that includes items that requiresome degree of cooking/processing. .
Hello. Pretty new to this channel less than 2 weeks. Your homemade MREs from Individual stores is what first caught my attention, and I found them to be quite interesting. The one thing I have noticed however is that you do not seem to include peanut butter based products in your choices. Could you please include peanut butter products, suggestions, or individual peanut butter packets? Keep up the great work!
I would love to but I haven’t included any yet because I haven’t found an appropriate sized package with an acceptable shelf life. It’s either large jars or small packs that expire in a month. I keep looking though, hoping I’ll find some.
I love to can, my pantries are filled with different soups and stews, meats and vegetables from my garden. This is how I do MRE's. We have a camper to use for camping as well. Come what may, my family will eat well.
I'm commenting to help the algorithm. 😂😂😂 I've been doing this stuff for years. I enjoy watching your channel and will keep commenting to help you out. Keep up the good work.
The best accessories I have put in homemade meal kits are leftover/free stuff from take out restaurants. The KFC "honey" isn't real honey but tastes good and adds the calories. I have packets of hot sauce from taco bell, ketchup from everywhere, mayo relish mustard from convenience stores, soy and duck sauce from Chinese places, plastic utensils and napkins from everywhere. Oh and wet naps from wing or bbq joints are great to pack along. One thing I wish was still around these days is matches. I remember when I was young almost every business has advertisment match books. They weren't waterproof but would be a nice free addition but hardly ever see them anymore. ✌️🇺🇸
Thank you! Either way, if you’re going right to specific things or spending time looking for new stuff to discover, you’re heading down the right road!
I am just starting, so I haven't gone total zombie mode....yet. I can tell you one thing that WON'T be in any of mine, and that is hearts of palm mock spaghetti..whoa that was bad.
I have watched a bunch of your mRE videos and STILL find a good idea in every one. Most often they come from your video and other times it is from the comment section. You have some smart fans! I am in Canada so I don't know if these products are available here. Hopefully there are similar options or I'll have to think creatively.
I’d like to see what you can put together from Trader Joe’s. Also, another bulk prep video like this one with stuff from Costco or Sam’s Club would be cool.
I did Joe’s a while back with a very different format but I think I’ll do another soon. I agree about the big box stores. I plan to do that too. Thanks for the great suggestions.
Just found your channel and I'm really enjoying the homemade mre shopping videos. One of my everyday drinks is Pure Kick Hydrate (strawberry/watermelon) that I've found at Dollar General and sometimes Walgreens. Have you ever done a Cub Foods shop? If you are ever in one of those, I hope it would be an easy one (maybe?). I am diabetic, so I'll try to come up with a diabetic friendly idea for one. I haven't tried Cafe Bustello, but we drink Tasters Choice every day. Keep 'em coming!
Great information! I didnt know that you could get individual honey packets. Also, I look for drink mixes that are sweetened with stevia rather than aspertame. The taste is better. And I can't do aspertame, it messes with me.
I am enjoying these videos and interested in the Baro Cook... but where are you finding good performing FRH's (MRE Flameless Ration Heaters)? Most of the FRH's online are older military surplus and often have items that are depleted and don't work.

If only I could find a source for the infamous Canadian "pain hamburger" for my MREs. (That's French for "hamburger bread," but when you open a Canadian meal and see that, it just adds to the excitement.)
Amazon has bulk packs of MRE bread options. Also, eBay can be a good source too. I recently ordered an assortment of desserts and was not disappointed.

Great vids , glad my algo popped u in my feed 🎉
Thank you. I’m glad too!
That would certainly get the job done
My favorite coffee for camping, hiking, quick fix are Folgers coffee singles. Real coffee in a tea bag form. Just way better than any instant coffee I’ve tried. They’re individually foil wrapped so they keep for a long time. And go good with Swiss Miss hot chocolate.
I keep looking but haven’t found them in any stores near me. Maybe I’ll find them eventually.
For desserts you can get those bags of Halloween ot Christmas candy assortments. The small chocolate bars are good in coffee or hot cocoa. Also around the holidays you can find hot cocoa assortments that aren't available at other times.
Definitely!
13:52 MREs are great...if...you can find them at a reasonable price, newly produced, and have been properly stored. My experiences have been that people asked premium prices for nearly expired meals that the case indicated were stored at less than optimal conditions.
Exactly the issue. Most sellers can’t guarantee the storage history but still charge full price.
No BS, relevant ingredients, real life MRE build. Another great video!
Thank you bud
Lots of good add ins! Thanks.
You’re welcome. Thank you for the support!
Hi! Thank you for making your videos. I appreciate how much I have learned and how many ideas I have gotten from watching them.
Thank you. I’m so glad you find them inspiring.
Those PB packs are great, I just haven’t found any with enough shelf life to be within the rules.
I haven't found an instant coffee that I like but I have found that you can get coffee in individual bags like tea. I use those a lot while out in the woods.
Those are not common where I live for some reason. I keep watching for them at the places I’m shopping and have yet to find them.
Liked the info about the Cafe Bustelo and Canada Dry drink mixes. Ya don't need the packs of cigarettes that came in some military rations (not MREs)! All very interesting!
Thank you!
Accessory packet. I purchased a package of the little dental floss and tooth pick combo. I throw one in every accessory packet, it can reel save the day with so of these foods
Those are a great item to add. Picked some up recently specifically for my kits.
I love the PK pure kick drink singles from dollar General. Think grape is my favorite.
I’ll need to look for those and try them out
I just found your channel this week
You're fun and entertaining
It's also fun putting together an MRE on my own
Thanks for all your help 🙂🍫🥄☕️
You’re quite welcome. I’m glad you found the channel and I hope it inspires you!
Thanks for Sharing. Try adding a spoon of peanut butter to the coco coffee drink. It add protein and is good for a boost.
Great suggestion!
I'm loving the gum idea, so cheap and you get so much, the mochaccino brings me back to my Military MRE days. A highlight 2 weeks in the field.
I’m discovering so many cool things doing these videos.
Thanks for the input. I’ll need to try those!
You’re welcome! If I can find the Yoo-hoo packs you better believe they’ll show up in a video.
I buy the cans of Gatorade mix at Walmart 8.88$ i believe and make individual servings to throw in my camping stuff. It makes 6 gallons total.
That’s a great plan
Nice mix of options. Thx for trying them and giving your opinion on their taste and the good/bad!
Thank you. I’m glad it’s connecting. Thank you for the support!
Thank you, you've made shopping for these fun not a chore.
Wow, thank you! That’s awesome to hear
Your mission if you except is to buy / build an MRE from 711 or Speedway or Pilot convenient store depending on availability in your area ! Make me proud I have done it. Pilot truck stops have great selection !
I’m gonna try my best to make this happen.
Some very cool ideas in this !!!
Thanks!
Those dehydrated strawberries,I’ve added them to bottled water along with the drink crystals. Thanks for the great ideas, apparently I need to go shopping at some different stores, you just showed me stuff I didn’t know existed.
That’s a brilliant suggestion. So many combinations that would work with!
We love your videos. My wife and I specifically headed out on an Ollie’s trip the other night fully inspired by you. Managed to get a few hits for food storage preps. Thanks!
Wow, that is so cool! Thanks for letting me know you found some inspiration here!
we do the same as you do, preparedness is a great idea.
It certainly doesn’t hurt. Although, for some reason, a lot of people think it’s weird.
@@dadbudgetadventures as a TH-cam team my daughter and I spent quite a bit of time on the road or in the field. So I have found that it is really important to have meals ready to go on the fly.
Absolutely. If nothing else it frees up time for handling other more pressing matters.
Hi I’m new to your channel and you’ve really given me food for thought, and researching Mylar bags I’ve found vacuum sealable variants. Great ideas for my western hunts!
Thanks! Glad to hear I’ve inspired something!
Learning a lot and enjoying your thoughts a lot. Thank you so much!
These tips and trials are very much appreciated. Additionally, I believe the customization aspect and budgetary aspect of this dialog puts this effort in a new place for me.
Thank you. It makes me so happy when people get it…I mean really understand the entire concept. You nailed it.
Great info! Thanks for sharing that.
would like to see you perhaps make your dream MRE, anything from anywhere. what would be in your ultimate gourmet MRE meal list.
I plan on doing just that. I’m building my list as I go.
Most intelligent & interesting home made mre videos I've seen
Wow, that’s high praise. Thank you.
New to the channel and I can't get enough.... nothing but love and respect from cincinnati ohio brother..... another great video.... keep them coming
Thank you so much. The support is greatly appreciated
Thanks for all you are doing. It's inspiring and looks fun i for one would like to see homemade mre that includes items that requiresome degree of cooking/processing. .
Thanks for watching! I will be doing some MREs that are a little more open to other stuff.
Also the honey will not allow bacteria to grow so it can be used to coat a wound. double duty my favorite thing.
Absolutely. It’s a perfect thing to have in any kit!
Canning is a solid plan and, on the whole, better than this stuff I’m doing. Better food choices means better health.
I'm commenting to help the algorithm. 😂😂😂
I've been doing this stuff for years. I enjoy watching your channel and will keep commenting to help you out. Keep up the good work.
And I truly appreciate that!
Great suggestions. Free stuff is always good!
Thanks for the vid.
'Lot's of good tips.
Keep up the good work.
Don't let the haters get 'ya down!
Thank you. I’m not gonna worry too much about them. I get so many positive comments I can overlook the trolls.
If you're out on the road, check out buccee's. Might be fun. Or see how many mre's you can put together from a Sam's or Costco run if youre a member.
I don’t have Bucee’s nearby but if I’m traveling I will try. I do plan to see what my Costco has to offer though.
I would like to see a Trader Joe’s mre , I think you did a while ago but I would like to see ! Thank you for the awesome video!
Thank you! I will be revisiting Joe’s soon!
I made myself really happy several times the other day.....with the cookies I mean....Another fantastic video.
I was hoping that’s where you were going with that 😂
Cool Video! New subscriber. Saves me time shopping around, thanks!
It does the exact opposite for me. He makes me want wonder through every store looking for stuff.
@@WhatAndyDoes You become an MRE Zombie 🤣🤣🤣!!! What's your favorite store bought item to add to your MRE's?
@@WhatAndyDoes that sound pretty gross!
I have watched a bunch of your mRE videos and STILL find a good idea in every one. Most often they come from your video and other times it is from the comment section. You have some smart fans!
I am in Canada so I don't know if these products are available here. Hopefully there are similar options or I'll have to think creatively.
Thank you! These viewers offer the best ideas!
I don’t have Cub but if I come across one I will check it out. I think I have a Pure Kick for an upcoming video. Looking forward to trying it.
I really enjoy your videos and learn so much Have put it into practice, Thank you
Thank you. I always love hearing that my videos inspire someone.
Just found you and subscribed. Watched a bunch in a row. Loving them and thanks for great ideas.
Thanks! I’m glad you’re here!
Have you tried an Aldi?
I did a couple years back with a different format so I may revisit that soon.
Gave me a bunch of good ideas.
Love hearing that!
I love me a DadBudget mochaccino. I have been waiting all summer for them to come. Back! ❤
Time for fall camping and fall food!
Ignore the negative people. Your videos are awesome!
Thank you so much. The way I look at it a comment counts no matter. They are only helping me along 😂
Love these videos. I'm learning so much
Thanks! Glad I’m contributing something
Great information! I didnt know that you could get individual honey packets. Also, I look for drink mixes that are sweetened with stevia rather than aspertame. The taste is better. And I can't do aspertame, it messes with me.
Those honey packs were a real find! So glad I stumbled across them.
Stevia isn't healthy. It's known to reduce fertility, for one thing. If people actually knew about the truth of Stevia, they'd avoid it.
The coco coffee is great. Been doing that for many years.
Good to know I’m not alone in that!
I am enjoying these videos and interested in the Baro Cook... but where are you finding good performing FRH's (MRE Flameless Ration Heaters)? Most of the FRH's online are older military surplus and often have items that are depleted and don't work.
The heating packs for mine are a Barocook item. They are also available on Amazon.
@@dadbudgetadventures Thanks! I found them now, by searching for "Barocook". Their description just says "heat pack". I was searching for "flameless heater" and "MRE".
I'm really enjoying your videos. Thank you.
Thank you. I truly appreciate the kind words.
Good content. Like how you find this stuff.
Thank you. As long as yall stay interested I’ll keep putting out information you can use.
Great information. I have been making MREs based on your reels
Wow, I’m honored. Great to hear people are watching and acting on what they see!
@@dadbudgetadventures I am including a mil surplus canteen and cup and sterno in mine, can warm up the mains and have hot water for coffee and liptons instant soup. Where did you find the honey packets?
Those are the ultimate companion!
The honey packs were at Walmart Neighborhood Markwt
Enjoy watching these videos
Thank you. I’m having fun making them!
Just found this channel and am liking it very much! Keep up the great work!
Thank you. I’m glad you’re here!
New subbed, loving these ideas!!!
Thank you. I’m so glad you’re here!
Just found your channel today and subscribed, love your videos so far! Will keep watching and liking!
Thank you. I’m glad you’re here!
I'm not a coffee drinker but when I do drink it. I add the hot chocolate powder mix. That's the only way I will drink coffee.
It definitely helps for people who need a little caffeine but don’t care for coffee.
Great ideas, thanks for some inspiration!
You’re quite welcome. Thanks for the support!
Great ideas sir!!! Well done!
Thank you. Much appreciated
Just came across your channel, subscribed.
Thank you. I’m glad you’re here!
I really liked this video. It's good to see different things to add into an MRE. Quick question. After you package up your MREs how to you store them?.
I use five gallon buckets and storage tubs for any of my storable foods.
Just came across your channel great video it's got me thanking about making my own mre.Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Great to know it got you thinking!
@dadbudgetadventures I have always bought the already made but now will try to make my own thanks again
Thank you!
You’re quite welcome!
Thanks for this!
You’re welcome. Thanks for the support!
I use the drink mixes at home, but only 1/4 of the packet per 30oz cup.
I’m guessing it’s a way to make sure you’re getting enough water by adding just a touch of flavor?
I would be interested in seeing a keto/carnivore MRE setup. The majority of the items you've listed have a lot of carbs and sugar...
That would be hard to put together outside of tuna pouches and beef jerky. Plus I don’t know much about those programs so I’d likely get some things wrong.
