Making this procedure LESS PAINFUL for the Baby Goats

  • Disbudding baby goats is never a fun task, but we've found a way to reduce their pain during the procedure. Follow along as we disbud our triplet Nigerian Dwarf baby goats and try out best to do it in a humane way.
    Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
    Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

      We have had them hit other goats and kill babies in utero, and make holes in barns. I have seen many on other farms get them caught in fences, on trees, with others and more. Plus to show many they must be dehorned. This last year I discovered see an article which a new procedure that is way better.

    What people who don't live on a farm just don't get, is how dangerous a goat with horns can be. A friend of mine had to have her mini pony put down because her fathers goat slammed up into her belly. He punctured the skin, and intestines. They didn't realize how bad it was until the pony went down hill very fast. A big goat with horns can do a great deal of damage. And NO putting pool noodles over their horns is not a safe option. Other goats will eat it. I know someone who lost one of their goats because it ATE the pool noodle. Not good people. Seriously.

      @@JubilantCharlie Theres plenty people who have goats as companion animals for other livestock so for safety that's why people have the horns removed, I have also personally seen goats that hung themselves on fencing and even plantlife due to their horns and passed away... they just aren't that smart of creatures and are too curious and playful for some environments to be safe. I think its very ignorant of you to assume that because someone disbudded their goats they abuse them :/ that lifetime of experience doesn't mean much when you don't accept that theres more than one right way to raise livestock

      Just because you take the poor goats horns away doesn't make them any less aggressive, if the reason you have a goat is for your kids to be around them then it doesn't matter if it has horns or not, it will still be aggressive and go after your kids, same with adults. You are only causing unnecessary pain and suffering for no reason

      That's pretty neat. I'm a city slicker and no nothing about raising goats, but is it common for the horns to grow back after deluding them?

    • @hbug13_62
      @hbug13_62 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lynn Roberge unfortunately it's not as uncommon for disbudding to go wrong. Three of my does have scurs as do the two bucklings I bought this fall. Again the bucklings I can understand more because you are fighting the testosterone driving horn growth. But it shouldn't be as much of a problem with females. I've heard some promising things about injecting clove oil into the site and it prevents horn growth, that would be a much less traumatic answer! Because for all those who think disbudding is cruel, they need to see what happens to other animals (if they don't care about people) when goats get carried away and intentionally or accidentally gore another animal. Or get the horn stuck in a fence and it breaks off. That's not uncommon either. So you have to pick the lesser of two evils.

    Aww I hate seeing them scream during disbudding!

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      They're screaming just because of the confinement and being away from their mother. As you can see, even with the numbing agent there's no change in their behavior compared to disbudding without the numbing agent. I've seen many of these procedures done and saw no difference at all. Even though it looks like a horribly painful experience, being disbudded isn't actually painful. The temperature is such that it causes an immediate third degree burn which means the pain receptor nerves are burned away instantly, and even without the numbing agent the area will be numb until nerves regrow there (the horns, meanwhile, will be dead and never grow again, unless there was a mistake in disbudding). As soon as they're out of the box and back with their mother they are happy and calm, regardless of whether this stuff is used or not. It might make the humans doing it feel better to put some goop on there first or afterwards, but it's really quite pointless from a humane standpoint and I wouldn't waste the time or money on it, personally. Regular disbudding is perfectly humane, and saves the goats, the herd, and the human handlers a lot of potential problems later.

      The nerves that can feel pain are burned away instantly and don't feel anything. With or without a numbing agent, the area will be numb as soon as the procedure is done. It's a third degree burn. The kids scream because they don't like being stuck in a box, away from their mothers. As you can see as soon as they're let out of the box and can go back to mom they're happy and calm and are clearly not suffering in any way. Disbudding is the most humane thing you can do for goats in captivity, as it will save them from getting hurt or hurting each other.

      You put a small rubber band on the scrotum, making sure to have both testicles though the band.
      Virtually painless, and it dries up and falls off in 3 weeks or so.
      BTW, I won't have mine disbudded any more.
      I have 3 right now that are naturally polled, Casper the Friendly Goat, and two on the young does.
      Their sire was polled, and passed that on.
      And Casper is new to the herd from Last July.
      He made himself at home very fast, and gradually got more and more friendly.

      If your talking about their channel name, there's a saying called read em and weep. So they changed it to for their channel. Weed em, like pick weeds, and reap, like to harvest.

      Hailstorm Sushi , you never heard the phrase”Read ‘em and Weep?” This a poker phrase used when the person with the winning hand , laysHis cards face up on the table so the losing players can read his cards and weep over their loss.

    Growing up we raised goats. My family was very active in 4H and we showed our goats. We milked them twice a day. We made all kind of things with their milk and also use it as our drinking milk. We made cheese, butter, ice cream and a few other thing with their milk. When we burned the kid's horns we never used a numbing cream. I'm not sure if the numbing cream is new on the market or what. We also just called it burning their horns rather than calling it disbudding. We all have our own way of doing this. I miss raising and showing goats. I can remember sleeping out in the goat barn when we knew it was getting close to one of our does (or also called nannies) getting ready to have their kid(s) (baby goats are called kids). I love watching your family on your farm brings back a lot of wonderful memories of my childhood.

    I just got my Mini Lamancha Buckling's horns done here 2 days ago they grew pretty quick but luckily they won't grow back or ever. There is 2 reasons i don't like horned goats 1 I had a buck who had horns and he was major aggressive would horn you every chance he got 2nd He died due to him getting his head stuck in a fence and panicked and broke his neck in the fence so that is why I now Only raise D-horned goats Sad to say that It took me loosing a Buckling to figure out that I don't want horned goats on my farm. will never ever keep horned goats on my farm.

    What I would suggest to store water would be the biggest water tank you can afford then install a RAM pump to take the water from your drain flow to where ever you want it to be pumped to, very cheap to make and costs NOTHING to run, don't need electric only flowing water to get it to pump to go into your tank, garden or pond.
    Here are a few youtube videos for you in the dry areas.
    “Homemade Ram Pump”
    “What Ram Pump Design is Better”
    “How to Build a hydraulic Ram Pump”
    “DIY cheapest valve (silent) for a True Linear Ram Pump - LONG version”
    “How to Build a Linear PVC Ram Pump!”
    “Pressure tank size - Ram Pump”
    Other projects for the children or yourselves.
    “How to build a simple PVC Hand Pump - the Peters Pump”
    “Ram Pump U Siphon Start”
    Pumps - EMAS hydraulic ram - part 1
    Pumps - EMAS hydraulic ram - part 2
    All the series of the EMAS are very good for very dry places digging wells, pumps ect,
    Here are a few more when you dig your pond and not being on clay you might need to seal it.
    “Fixing a Leaky Pond with Ducks”
    “Permaculture Tip of the Day - Close Proximity Duck System”
    “Ferrocement tank in a remote community” (this one shows how to seal the concrete tank with cement slurry, paint it on needs about 2-3 coats)
    NOW The expensive way of sealing a pond
    “How To: Fixing A Leaking Pond”
    “How to Repair Concrete with Epoxy Injection Techniques (NEW)”
    “Waterproofing Tunnels”
    “Repairing an Active Leak in Cracked Concrete with 900 XLV"
    I am at present trying to help young people with no families survive and teach them permaculture and water storage. This is so they can survive after I have gone home upstairs I am getting on 76. If you can find people who could help and donate it would be a blessing. It is the water and shamba project Kenya, send not to me but direct through paypal waspkenya@ outlook.com

    The most humane way to do it would be to do a nerve block with lidocaine. Goats have two nerves that directly connect to the horn. Topical numbing cream doesn’t do much for the deeper tissues.

    • @thebookstrawberry3909
      @thebookstrawberry3909 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Paige Lalicker their horns are harmless. And there is no reason to remove them and cause them pain. In fact, you use the horns to hold onto them or move them and it doesn’t hurt them, so it’s kinda counter productive. It does more damage than good. Their is the argument that the goat could hurt something with the horns but if you can’t handle and animal, by putting time, care, and love into taming it you just shouldn’t have it.

    • @paigelalicker6348
      @paigelalicker6348 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheBookStrawberry I understand that both so many goats it's hard to control them on their own and they actually have a pretty decent way of being able to move them from place to place without using the horns and their goats me and up being aggressive you never know with goats or any other animal if it'll be a pain in the bleep to train them and while mating or breeding or whatever the f you want to call it they can end up getting territorial which they'll fight for mates and crap like that and they can end up hurting other goes in my opinion I really wish that it was painless but I do like how they do in their young so then when they're older they might not remember it like how I don't remember when I was one years old so they may not remember it and it's quick and like a day or so later they'll be out of pain and they did try to make it painless yes I understand that wasn't completely painless but it helps the horns and less injuries happen and it is better safe than sorry personally I would prefer any goats that I have to do this and yes I'm new to it but I also understand quite a bit about it in my opinion I just wanted your side of the story and opinion on it other than the fact that you would rather it not be done

    is there any good reason to NOT disbud a potential herd sire? in other words, on the adult males - would having "handles" (horns) help you in controlling them? or does such a goat need horns to defend his herd? (is it a "herd"?) I'm asking because I don't know - I can see advantages and disadvantages both ways. more disadvantages than advantages to be sure.

    See I am very much against the process, but I refuse to judge, when buying baby goats a specifically set out to buy ones that have not had this done, in the UK all forms of modifications to dogs are illagal tail docking, dew claw removal, ear cropping same with cats noone in this country would even consider declawing a cat, now to my point I have seen the exact same argument for all the above things in terms of safety and health and welfare and for me taking away horns falls under the same umbrella all my animals are as they were born and they are all happy and healthy and so is my family, so that's how I feel but I would never judge anyone else it's not my place tbh, but I do believe whole heartily that others including daneel and her family do what they do with only the animals best interests at heart in the same way I do, noone will change the mind of someone doing what they feel is best for those they love so all that is left is acceptance 😊
