What did you think of Tom and Ira’s comments?
Didn't think much of Ira's comments. I don't know if it's because he doesn't want to burn bridges with staff that he seeks interviews with for stories, but he is constantly an apologist for the weakest members of the coaching staff.
Great video with a lot of insight.
Late 90s, FSU’s starting LBs were Sam Cowart, Daryl Bush, and Lamont Green. They were backed upby Tommy Polley and Brian Allen. Lots of accolades in that group.
Just for context , during the Dark Era, FSU STILL managed a starting group of all conference players, Geno Hayes, Derek Nicholson, and Dekoda Watson.
We are just coming off of an incredible season and great two year stretch. This has been reflected in our OL, WR, DE, DB, RB, and QB recruiting, where we are now getting blue chips annually. Is it not ok to expect the same level of results from the LB position as well?
It’s actually OK to want a great recruiter and a great coach.

Ira and a few others give Shannon more credit for developing players than he deserves. He has had one 7th round draft pick selected from his unit.
I’m about development and the linebacker play has been better since Shannon started coaching them

1 top 20 LB signed in 3 years...and make no mistake the was Wray relationship with the family. No one says Randy can't coach.
2) just because there isn't a recent history of good LB recruiting isn't an excuse for what's going on. The program was in dysfunction before the last 2 years and the coaches were Bill Miller, Raymond woody, Chris marker, etc...awful recruiters and in some cases coaches. Randy can't capitalize on a 13-0 season.
3) Odell and dugans got recent love because they signed blue chip players and Odell is proven he can get guys when Noles are playing well.....cmon, Randy has been here 3-4 years and got nothing in HS recruiting...and before that Gainesville, Miami, UCF fans all saw his inability to recruit - thus the Randy special moniker was born 10 years ago and he has done nothing to improve that.
3) you kind of countered your own point with surtain...recruiters recruit and he hit the ground running...with great results. You are making the point that CMN has certain things he looks for in coaches, and will settle for lack of recruiting...well that's what Randy is. So just say he is a good coach but terrible recruiter and Mike is fine with it.
Having cryer and nichelson next year as your foundation you will rely on with no real solid backup...Is scary. Those two would not be starters on top 5 teams..they just aren't...

Thank you Ira and Tom!! Appreciate Ira giving us the bigger picture issues. CMN doesn't focus on getting GREAT recruiters but is focused on coaching them up and getting Ws on the field while also fostering great locker room culture. This is def not just a Randy Shannon issue!!

All I care about is results, and our LB play is miles ahead of what it was.
Also, LB recruiting is unpredictable. Look at all the blue chip busts we had over the past 15 years. Remember people losing their minds over losing Bissante? That guy on the verge of getting pushed out at the U.
Agreed, results are all that matter. Forget the HS recruiting reality tv.
The question is, is kid being pushed out at Mia because their staff is failing to develop him? Or is kid not coachable? We aren't developing at a 100% rate either see McCall, and Jacobs leaving etc
So we should just settle for missing out on three elite linebacker recruits in one day?
And exactly how recruiting wise the linebacker position is mutually exclusive of other positions as you say it's unpredictable? They are all unpredictable. It's getting over the unpredictability that makes a coach a great recruiter!

Question, with unlimited Number of Coaching Can be added why not just get a Pure Recruiter to complement Shannon? The rule change for unlimited coaches gives you a solution.

That's a very good question. Why does it appear that FSU gets "played" by top level recruits? Why do recruits want to embarrass Florida State? Why did the committee decide to play a much reduced FSU against UGA, which really was the nation's # 1 team other than that silly game they played in the SEC champ game. Hard to understand.
It needs to improve but I think we're far from panic mode. Young guys look solid and portal LB recruiting has been nice with Bethune, Murphy, Riley
I do believe it's the system that drives LBs away.

I’m good with Randy Shannon
The U does not just hire anyone off the street... He is a good hire and a great role model for these players.
He knows his stuff, it is just a matter of getting talent in here and making it work!
The 2 biggest plays of 2023 were made by LBs. He developed Deloach, Batum, and Lundy into studs. Cryer and Nicholson are coming. Plus the portal guys shows the cubbard ain't bare. Young guys want playing time and we are too deep for young guys to see the field
I agree with Ira, I still think FSU fans an the warchant crew which I love still doesn't fully believe in Mike and his staff. Randy did a great job last year with the linebackers let's get behind Randy and the rest of the staff and keep the faith. Great conversation guys go Noles

I must agree somewhat with one issue Ira brought up. We did have two other coaches that struggled to land recruits. Now look at them. I dunno but i do see FSU getting alot of blue chips, not a LB. Js.

As we move away from "old school" recruiting pre-NIL, we'll need real coaches and not bag men or recruiters. Norvell is ahead of the game here and has been adding actual coaches who can develop players and get results ON the field. Randy has been solid, but i think we need a bigger LB budget in the future to compete for top talent.
Being a Canes fan yall can have Randy..he isn't great at anything..but his attitude seems to come off like he's elite..
Not every coach is a recruiter. Just like not every coach can be a head coach. The man develops complete linebackers.
Regardless. Your improving at recruiting at all positions except for this one. I’m sure Norvell isn’t accepting “well, we’ve historically not recruited well at LB”
Bottom line is you’re getting these kids on campus for OVs. You’re in top 3s and not closing. Period.
Keep him as assistant DC or analyst, just pull him from recruiting duties.
Maybe a little mor NIL money into lb recruits could help
Outside of Nichleson, highschool LB recruiting has been terrible over the years. We're depending on transfers. We haven't had a LB get drafted in the earlier round in years. We need an elite recruiter at that position.
We can't claim to be at some kind of disadvantage from a recruiting perspective in regards to how much money we can offer a kid either and yet claim our NIL is top 2ish. If in fact our NIL is top 2!! Nobody should be able to 'outbid' us see that all star team OSU has put together this off season we would claim we can't afford it yet we claim our NIL is the best the 2 arguments are in contrast to each other

We had very poor LB coaching and defensive coaches under Jimbo and Willy. Was a joke. Also Georgia coming back also hurts when we were down. Look where those kids come from. The top 5 LBs per year. The rankings are a joke. Need to look at top 15 or so guys
I do not want Shannon to lose his job, I think he's a great coach. I just don't want him to be the point of contact when it comes to recruiting HS players, clearly, he struggles to connect with young HS players. I think the Ernie Sims addition will fix this going forward. GO NOLES!

Ira’s correct, Shannon has done an excellent job. We just need him to change mindset on getting some 5 stars.

There's a lot of bashing going on with R.Shannon. Let's go back to when he was first hired as an analyst. Fuller and that defense at that point was putrid and Fuller looked like he had no clue as to what he was doing. Yes, our defense was coming of the Taggart years, so it wasn't completely Fuller's fault the way the defense was playing. Shannon, then came out of that analyst role and onto an on-field position. At that point, the defense started to look different, more organized. The defense every week from that point on looked better. I give Shannon some credit for that, and for that reason I want to give Shannon more time. Let someone else recruit LB's, I don't know if that is possible, but I don't want to cut Shannon just yet. I normally don't want any former Miami of Florida players anywhere near FSU, but I want to give Shannon more time.
I dunno I like Shannon...defense coulda won a championship last year given the opportunity..

Ira is trying to make the case that Randy is squeezing competency out these lower ranked recruits.. but the thing is why are we having to settle for lower ranked recruits? Yes ppl have already went over our history of putting high caliber LBs into the league and having a history of producing All American types throughout the dynasty we expect to be able to snap back regardless of the last 10 yrs draft production

No, the system 5-2-4 doesn't lend itself to LB recruiting. He did a very good job at Miami, recruiting and coaching.

Ira I think he’s developed kids. It’s obvious. But he can’t get the top kids anymore. We have a lot of old coaches man. We could use some juice on the trail. Odell stays till he dies. And no Randy does not get credit for Nicholson.

Part of the elephant in the room is murky waters of the NIL. Miami is a money machine and hard to compete with.

Shannon has missed on all the South Florida talent he was hired to recruit and land. I don’t think Shannon’s heart is at FSU. He needs to be terminated.
Randy coaches and develops players really well, he just can’t recruit worth a damn.
