Even if you played 2 LPs a day everyday for a year this will only put 490hrs wear on the tip. Most good quality styli have a life of at least 1000hrs. With clean LPs you can extend this to 2000 minimum.

    • @latheofheaven

I'm REALLY glad you put this here because I've had my system in a listening room away from where I live for a VERY long time. However, up until recently I have barely gone over there and done any listening. So, using your number above which I HOPE is somewhat accurate :) it would take 4 years to put 2000 hours on a stylus. If I listened to 2 albums every other day, it should take 8 years. So, I figure that if I listened to 2 albums every 8 days (which I haven't even come close to that) that would mean that it would take 32 years to put 2000 hours on my stylus... :D
I think that you have put my mind at rest...

Your backup stylus, even if not used, will wear out of deterioration. He also mentions this in the video.

The thing about growing up with something is you take it for granted. By the time CDs hit the market I was in my late teens and we only got the cheapest record players, so I thought CDs were mind-blowing and my records went in storage. When mp3s came out I sold off all of my CDs. About eight years ago I found a turntable in the trash and intended on scavenging it for parts but when I got it back to my apartment I noticed it was in great shape so I kept it intact. It's a 1977 MCS 6700 Direct Drive. It had a Shure cartridge with a missing stylus, which I replaced with a new $40 cartridge from a DJ supplier. It sounded good and it renewed my interest in records right at the time they started becoming a thing again. Last year I upgraded to the Ortofon Blue. Holy cow! It sounds incredibly good, and some of my records sound much more alive - even different musically. One in particular is Kraftwerk's "Computer World," which has a great three-dimensional sound stage through the Blue. I'm amazed at how solid the Blue sounds - not at all vague-sounding like any cartridge I had before. Clearly a good cartridge brings you closer to what the artists intended for you to hear.

Funny, I came across an MCS 6601 at Goodwill for $6 the other day, googled it because I'd never heard of it, and thought it seemed like a really decent piece. Didn't buy it because I have two SL-1200s :) Came here because I think my stylus might need replacing or at least cleaning (Ortofon DigiTrack). Will have to check out the blue.

Do you still have the Shure cartridge? I ask because I recently bought a 1978 HH Scott turntable that has a Realistic/Shure R1000E cartridge and I was surprised how good it sounds compared to my Audio Technica LP-120 with the AT A95E cartridge.

Still running the Ortofon VMS made in 1984. It spent some thirty years unused in the attic so the mileage is low. Ordered replacement needle from Japan, tried it... not as good as the original. Swapped in a Grado cartridge... very different, but not really bettter. So I kept the Ortofon and so far it's fine.

Ortofon states to replace for example a 2M Red every 1000 hours of playtime. On facebook they state replace it every 500 hours of playtime. I almost threw my 2M Red in the trashbin because it sounded thin. Found out that needles can be wet cleaned as well. Bought an Audio-Technica cleaning solutin with a brush and it worked like magic. As long as you clean your needle properly every month (clean it with a brush every time you play a side of a record) you're good to go. My father was into DJing in the 70es and 80es as a teenager and he never replaced the needles on his Technics turntables and today one of them still runs with the factory stylus - still sounds better than a Crosley. Finding your channel is by far one of the highlights this month. Keep the quality stuff rollin'. Greetings from Germany.

I replaced the stylus on my turntable after 5 years (Ortofon 2m red). I had just noticed the sound being "off" just a bit. @batman.darthmaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hello, Craig. I respectfully disagree. Those stats might be popular in some circles, but in my opinion, they are a pretty big overgeneralization. Specifically, here's why:
Many factors come into play with stylus life: shape, stylus cleanliness, TT set-up (VTF, alignment, level TT, etc), whether you clean your records before you play them, etc. If you play dirty records with a dirty conical stylus then maybe 500 hours (certainly more than 300, imo) is a good number. However, a properly maintained conical stylus playing properly cleaned and maintained LPs on a properly set-up TT should get more than 500 hours of life. In fact, a properly maintained microline stylus could easily do better than 1000 hours. At the very least you should look up your specific model's manufacturer's recommendations. Mine does not even give me any specific numbers. Why? Because there aren't any (for the reasons I just listed).
Maybe just replace annually regardless? Assuming proper set-up and maintenance, there is just no reason to replace a stylus annually unless the stylus is simply worn from playing your LPs several hours, and I do mean several, (or more) every single day. Hey, it's up to you, but I definitely disagree with what are, in my opinion, highly over-conservative numbers.

How long would a diamond stylus last if you are playing a record everyday, the 1980s Technics turntable has a diamond stylus and it is sounding a bit dogy. Basically does it make a difference if it is a diamond stylus?

I have upgraded to my fathers old Hitachi HT-350 and it's still got his stylus and cartridge in it. Probably atlest 10 years old but more probably it's 20 or more. The weird thing is it does not sound obviously bad.
I am planning on getting another cartridge that is newer but probably cheaper just to hear if there is any difference in it being more "fresh". Would a old cartridge be okay if you found one unused or rarely used?

also depends on the tracking force?

  • @pd1jdw630
    @pd1jdw630 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I used to use a microscope to check the stylus/needle, and look for flat spots on the sides. Check Jim Lindenas channel he has a few video's on that topic. ( Instead from the top. Look from the side that touches the groove ) The stylus/needle doesn't wear on the tip , contrarily to believe.
Nowadays i replace it every 1200 hours of playing.
That' s about 1300 records to be played, and that's about 25 records a week to play. For it to replace your stylus/needle every year.
But setting up your record player cartridge combination properly will help tremendously yes. Also keeping your records clean helps a lot.
BTW older cartridges are still good, but like you said. some parts deteriorate.
MC cartridges like B&O mmc cartridges have internal moving rubber parts.
I Highly Recommend You Do Not Buy These as NOS. Replace them ore send them of the be repaired.
The MM Cartridges can still be used, though buy a new stylus/needle immediately when you intend to use the cartridge.
There are still some really good cartridges out there like for instance.
the Audio Technica AT-12-XE which can still be fitted with a range of styluses from spherical to Shibata. Just to name one.
I had luck with an old JVC QL-A2 record player that has a JVC Z-1 cartridge and a broken needle. and was a little beat up.

Though that could be because I don't have a preamp yet. I'll be getting one though. Also, do you know if there are any replacement needles that you can get that have both the regular needle and a 78rpm needle, as mine has both and it would be nice to have to have both?

Doesn't it really depend on what kind of needle you use? Because the Ortofon 2M Blue for example should "live" quite longer than the Red, right?

    • @vinyleyezz
      @vinyleyezz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Dominik Heinzle Yes, it really depends on the record playing habits and also the quality of the stylus. If it's a higher quality, it'll wear down slower so you won't need to replace it as often! I've heard many great things about the Ortofon 2M Blue!

when i got my turntable it still had the original 30+ year old audio-technica cartridge on it. i replaced the stylus but the sound was very dull and boomy with no highs- I had to crank the treble on my reciever and turn the bass down all the way and it still sounded like a wool blanket was draped over the speakers.
bought an Ortofon 2m red and it sounds great with no inner groove distortion, and I can turn off my EQ:)

  • @vibingwithvinyl

You know, a normal magnetic cartridge doesn't really "age." The stylus does though; specially if it's not used the stylus cantilever suspension tends to harden over time since it's usually made of rubber. Playing records tends to keep the suspension pliable but then of course the tip itself wears. I guess it's a lose-lose situation.
edit: I used to run a Shure V15 Type III from the mid 70's and the cartridge itself was absolutely fine. I did replace the stylus though, even if the original did still sound good.

I recently inherited an Empire 598 Troubadour. It has an Empire 1000ZE/X cartridge with a Empire stylus on it. I could guess the components are decades old!!
I would like to see if the sound quality improves with a newer cartridge/stylus combo but fear defacing this beautiful turntable with aftermarket components.
I do like the sound quality I hear now but also have nothing to compare it to......
What is your opinion on working on and changing components on vintage turntables?
Could you possibly recommend a cart and stylus for my application?

would having a lid on the turntable make the stylus last longer? mine is a technics from 1985 and i know the stylus has never been replaced but it hasn't been used a lot and has sat with the lid on, untouched for years at a time. It sounds alright to me but I don't really have anything else to compare it to.

I replaced my needle 2 months ago. The needle has been used for about 14 months and i am not really using the record player daily.
Sometimes, i would play one record a week, sometimes i would play records for 5-6 hours straight on weekends. Beside that, i am also using a stylus cleaner(Audio Technica AT607 "Stylus Cleaning Formula") after nearly every full play of an LP.
That might be one of the reasons, why it took about 12-13 months to sound muddy.
Do you know the album "Misplaced Childhood" by Marillion? This album has got one of the best mixes between bass pedals and bass guitars. Especially the transitions were much smoother with a new needle than with the used one. It was a "WOW", when i first played the album with a new needle! :O
