These historical recordings, made during chaotic times of turmoil, have captivated the voices of 2 magnificent tenors! Joseph Schmidt, a long time favorite of mine had a tragic fate. Also his physical size limited his opera stage career, radio & movies allowing him to rise to fame. Nonetheless here are 2 magnificent voices we can still enjoy, even if technical recording possibilities were so much more limited then than they are today. Long live Tauber! Long live Schmidt!

A truly wonderful piece of nostalgia. I have collected the recorded works of these two great gentlemen for many years and I am overjoyed to have this little memento as part of my archive. Thank you so much.

It is sad there are no subtitles, but it is SO great to hear and see these two fantastic tenors perform! In my opinion, they are among the best of the best with rich voices and rapid vibrato.

Sus voces permanecen bellas, intensas como testimonio de que el arte es más fuerte que la destrucción que produce el odio..Aunque ellos mueren por ser humanos o por ser victimas en tiempos de guerra, trascienden por su canto.

Probably the 2 best remembered German tenors from this period. IMO, Schmidt’s instrument was superior, nevertheless Tauber had a considerable following & a great deal of natural charm that served him well in films, radio, & live appearances. Unfortunately for Schmidt his short height limited his stage roles but this could be disguised at times, apparently.

Interesting to watch & hear them singing and to compare their styles with the voice of my favourite singer, Heddle Nash, an amazing English tenor also around in the 1930s. Thanks!

I see all these wonderful examples of Joseph Schmidt's excellent voice, and am saddened at the waste caused by the foolish hatred of (by) the Nazis. (And the stupidity of the camp personnel where he died.)

Both wonderful tenors, Schmidt was incredibly talented but died very young, around 36 or 38. He was captive by the Nazis for a while, which contributed to his early death

@@iritlerner5526 Yes, they basically where the cause of his demise, and the neutral Swiss, as he was held in a Swiss internment camp after running out of Germany, he was Jewish, but was caught in Nazi occupied France, then sent to a internment Swiss camp for Illegal's, the conditions there where poor.. Schmidt was only four feet ten and 100 pounds, he then developed TB and heart trouble there, he died at age 38 in Nov. 1942. If he hadn't been a Jew, he would have stayed in Berlin Germany, as he was very popular at that time , but it was 1942. Remember he had given concerts in NYC at Carnegie hall in 1938 but had then (Bad Choice for a Jew) gone back to Germany on advice from his manager in Germany, Mr. Leo Engel (his own uncle) that was very poor advice, going back to Berlin, at that time, sadly bad advice for this Jewish man. (RIP--1904-1942)

@@shicoff1398 I also read that Schmidt went back to Germany after his Carnegie Hall appearance because he could not bear to leave his mother there alone.

@@TimothyJonSarris She didn't live in Germany anyhow, and I read, he went back because he had his home there and his uncle Leo Engel was his manager and told him it was fine there, anyhow who knows, I don't believe all I read, and I wasn't there, but it was tragic for sure, no matter what, he was dead at age 38.

Intresting and funny! Tauber is siinging Schubert partly like typical German Schlager of this time and way to fast! He was aslo an comedian and for me it is obvious why he moved from the very serious Opern Genere to Operette, German Schlager and so on!
