Every one of Fed's winners from 1-3 down in the final set, were fully committed, do-or-die shots. The power he was generating off his backhand was just incredible. Both players threw the kitchen sink at one another and, in the end, Roger was last man standing. I have watched this last set, countless times, and, it never gets old. For all tennis fans, this was Rafa & Roger's "gift" for the ages!
I think he was still holding something back. The thing is, he can hit even harder. If you look at his fastest forehands and backhands ever, they're both above 100 mph. Anyway, it was great to watch his controlled aggression come off.
Molybdaenmornell you don’t want to hit everything at 100%. It’s like having a high serve percentage while tryna serve at 160mph. Also, there would’ve been a lot of nerves in the last set for both players, so to feel in control you would need to hold back a little bit (just so your comfortable)
@@angejo5591: I agree. Personally, i hit almost nothing at 100%. The only situation where going all-out is your best chance, is if your opponent is so much better than you that anything less will be swatted away.
I don't think anyone will ever forget this match. Federer was 1- 3 down in the final set. Than he came back with those unforgettable shots. Fortunate that i have seen it live.
Rafa may think sometimes, "I had it, I was so close and I let it go". But when you watch the full set, Rafa has absolutely nothing to regret about. Federer simply entered the clutch zone, and started to find his way to the title via winners. He took all risks, he went for it, he wished the victory more. It was his best set in terms of mindset. Roger won. On the other hand, Rafa did let the victory go against Novak in 2012, when he was a break up 4-2 and 30-15, when he missed that infamous easy backhand passing shot that would eventually lead to Novak's victory. Anyway, these two finals are, probably, Rafa's most painful losses of his career.
I disagree. For sure they were the most painful losses for Nadal fans, but from a personal point of view, Rafa admitted that both finals made him stronger. In fact, 2012's final helped him to realise that he was able to beat Novak, and that's what happened in the clay season. He also had a very good year in 2017, and after all, Roger really deserved that victory. The most painful loss for Nadal was for sure AO 2014, where he was playing incredibly on hard and couldn't compete the final properly. That final affected him psychologically for a very long time...
@@wtevwwe11 Probably as well, yes. Of course those losses made Rafa stronger. Rafa is arguably the greatest sportsman ever in terms of mindset. He always comes back stronger. That's part of his DNA. He even won Madrid and the French after losing to Wawrinka, before falling down in that deep hole for almost 3 years. But, to me, the closer the loss, the more painful it is. At the AO 2014 final, he knew it was over early in the match. After Wawrinka got the break in the second set, Nadal was resigned. He was destroyed of course, but he was already preparing himself mentally for the loss as the match was still developing. In 2012 and 2017, he was a break up in the fifth, and he ended up losing both finals, against his greatest rivals. The trophy was in his hands and then it was stolen. Yes, you can be satisfied of being competitive and giving your opponents a hard hard time for the win (as Rafa admitted in 2012), but also the thoughts of "If I had played that point differently", "If I hadn't missed that point", "If I had served better", if, if if, keep floating in your head for a while after a close loss. It's easier to accept that you lost a match because you weren't at your fullest physically. Anyway, those 3 australian open losses prevented him from winning all 4 GS twice. His most painful losses for sure (2012, 2014, 2017). In the 2019 final, he entered the match already defeated.
@@saidmiranda1989 I mean, we pretty much agree. However, Rafa himself said that AO2012 was not so painful because he played at the same level as Novak after many matches clearly behind him in 2011. And despite the negative thoughts, Roger couldn't have played better in the last games and when this happens it is easier to accept the loss. I personally think that the problem in 2014 was that he was playing that well (one of his highest peaks in hard court), that it was impossible not to feel the favourite in the final, despite Wawrinka's level. You know, it was an oponent he had always won, first GS final for him, Nadal came from a superb semifinal...and suddenly he saw how he was not able to compete and missed a great chance to win another AO. It was nobody's fault, but still an outcome difficult to handle. Btw, I totally agree about the 2019 final. This entire tournament is seriously one of the best of Federer´s career. In terms of beating opponents and being clutch. Best tennis he played since Roland Garros 2011 where he beat Djockovic at his ultra peak and gave Nadal serious problems in the final, losing in four sets, including losing a tie break. Very different tennis. In 2011 at Roland Garros he was playing an uncharacteristcally grinding version of tennis, playing long point against Djockovic and Nadal, not being ultra agressive as he usually is against those two. In this tournament he is 35 years old, difficult draw and is forced to play a much more aggressive game. He beat Melzer in 4, a Jurgen Melzer who still had some fight left in him, then Noah Rubin, then straight setted Berdych in an incredible display, then beat peak deciding setikori in 5 in the 4th round, so thats two slam finalists before even the quarterfinal. In semis and quarters he was more kucky playing Misha Zverev and Wawrinka. Two players that are easy match ups for him. Fed and been out for a while and no one expected him to reach the final and Nadal was heavy favourite in the final. In their last 20 meetings Fed had win just 5, Nadal 15. Fed hadnt beaten Nadal at a slam for literally 10 years. And despite falling back he went and fucking did it. Im not a Fed fan per say, but I prefer him over Nadal. And this was maybe the most epic match I have ever seen. The old GOAT showing the bull that he still had some tricks up his sleeve that he was still the goat
this is still the greatest comeback victory in the open era of men's tennis. beating 4 top 10s to win a Grand Slam had never been done before and hasn't been done since(as of early 2022). at most any player can get is 5 top 10s in a knockout tournament. just think about it: had Murray just beaten Misha like he was expected to then Federer would have played 5 straight top 10 players from the 3rd round. calling this a difficult draw is the understatement of the decade or probably of the open era. This is mathematically THE DIFFICULT DRAW POSSIBLE especially for a seeded player. Federer still had to contend with 4 top 10 players and beating top 2 players remaining in the draw to win the title was never going to be a easy feat. calling the Wawrinka match easy was proven to be another understatement of the year given he was defending US Open champion, top 4 seed and also former champion at AO. not too many have won the title after winning 3 five set matches AND also beating 4 top 10s almost back to back. nobody else is probably going to have a more difficult draw and have a similar performance as Federer at this tournament.
People forget the fact that Federer was out for 6 months with injury and had just come back. No one expected him to even get past Quarters but he ended up producing this magic.
I love both players. But you cannot deny it was a “Return of the King” moment! After coming back from injury and winning his 18th slam it was definitely a magical and inspiring moment. Love the stories we will tell to those future tennis players someday :)
We've been privileged to be around during an age when tennis is televised across the whole world, and during which the two greatest players ever to pick up a racket have put on some absolutely astonishing shows for us. The sport is immeasurably greater because of these two men. Whenever they meet they throw everything at each other, and it's beautiful.
The opponent, the location, his age, the circumstances. For Federer fans, if this was not his greatest victory, it ranks amongst the highest. He went all out and it worked. Extraordinary play, game by game, and the last set was sensational. Unforgettable.
This match is like someone wrote it for a movie, with all the titles and things on the line for the final. It was more than perfect. many matches like this just dont happen, either someone loses early or they play and one of them is just bad. Then the break back in the final set to win its just perfect story material right there. Its still crazy to me this actually happened lol
Lo admiro por ser uno de los mejores tennistas del mundo y por ser un hombre noble que comparte lo suyo con los mas necesitados. Un gran jugador y una gran persona!!
I was up early to watch the match. I thought it was over after the break in the 5th set but Roger stayed focused and broke back. One of his best comebacks. #GOAT
TheDazzler420 Well considering those 5 matches were over the course of several years, it’s not like Nadal didn’t have time to work out a new game plan. Roger just finally got over the 1 weakness he had against Rafa & that’s why he’s won 6 of the last 7 matches they’ve had.
@@sasook it's because Nadal was forced to change his play style. He's nowhere near as athletic as he was (which was his main strength) and so he had to change and his new play style is not that effective against federer. But still can't beat him on clay though
AGL That is true. He’s had to become more aggressive with age, which is right in Federer’s ballpark. You can’t beat Roger with aggression (mostly), you beat him with defense & taking away his forehand winners.
@@sasook exactly. The only one who really bothers federer is nadal on clay and Djokovic. Idk what that guy has, but he's been in federers ass for the last 4 years. As much as I love fedal I have nothing but respect for Djokovic and what he's achieved in the past 5 years
Returning to this after watching the Nadal Medvedev 2022 final makes me very emotional. Not because Fed the man is on the cusp of retiring, but rather because his playing style will go with him. I watched the entire final this year glued to the screen, and it was one of the best matches I've seen. But Fed's blend of attacking tennis (standing inside or close to baseline by default) and feel/touch (just pure magic when he's "on") may never be seen again. I've had the pleasure of seeing Nadal live and in person twice, but never Roger, and I long for his game to live on, even if he retires. I just personally think it is the most gorgeous version of tennis.
Have a like. You've said about the Fed's tennis all that needs to be said. It's also what anybody with an aesthetic sense (and unbiased eyes) can see - that tennis incarnated itself in the Fed. He is the pinnacle of kinaesthetic grace in tennis. Perhaps even more astonishing is how he was simultaneously tennis's greatest shotmaker, greatest kinaesthetic proponent, _and_ greatest winner (between 2003-2009), an unprecendented achievement in _any_ individual sport let alone one as physically taxing as tennis. You're unlikely to see the game played like that again, simply because the Fed is truly a never-before-never-again phenomenon.
@@edgybitch2177 Nah, not really. I mean, I like Ash's game. She has variety and her slice is very good, but Federer-esque may be reaching, given that Fed's variety and slice are a level above. (He basically plays his slice with the cut of a TT slice!) And that's where comparison ends there. Not just for Ash but for basically everybody else who's played the game. They talk about Johnny Mac's touch and style, but put his style next to the Fed and even it looks clunky (like JM himself has no problem admitting). After all, a game only incarnates itself once, I suppose. We were lucky to be around and have the TV and the internet when it did. :)
@@thesoccergod the only person in sport I can think of that was as dominant (i.e. top 3 in GOAT conversation) and as recognized for the beauty and grace of his game is Michael Jordan in basketball (any other ideas?). @@thesoccergod I'm referring to her backwards and away DTL forehand, and the way she glided around the ball to hit inside out winners. There was a lot more to compare to Fed than just her slice.
He really looked relaxed here without letting those expectations and cheering from fans get into his mind. He simply needs to shut himself away from world and focus on match and he can win every where over every one except for Rafa on clay.
Man this was a crazy tourney for him, people forget he was just coming back & working his way back into form. I remember watching this and feeling like he learned a few things over the years. He took the ball much earlier in many times to break the rhythm and like you all have said that backhand was good… so much so that he really started to take away Rafa’s forehand. Crazy times.
Rog didn't play it bad. He was nervous at the end. He knows he's 38 and the fact that the Next Gen. is coming and it will be harder to win more slams (and he was also tired, 5h+ playing).
His body betrayed him badly there. Usually he closes most matches at Wimbledon with aces as featured in that 100 Wimbledon wins video but didn’t do it there when it mattered the most. I don’t know about him but I have lost mental strength to watch Wimbledon anymore now.
His backhand was on fire He never missed a single shot Hard and deep pin point accuracy Even down the line The best ever What a match What a game What a beautiful array of shots Federer

I had to work a couple of hours after the end of the match. Gave up a good night’s sleep to watch this match. It was awesome. The best his backhand has ever been.
Still have good memories about this match... nadal asked a lot of questions and federer gave a lot of answers... eventually nadal ran out of questions to asked
This kind of performance is the ultimate level in tennis. Its the kind of level that sinks a on fire Nadal to a 0-5 games. I still cant understand how Federer was able to show this kind of display. I ve been following his and Nadal's entire career and I got used to expect Nadal to prevail mentally always. This moment was unique, and certainly assured to Federer the respect he deserves as a legend. We will never forget this.
The fade-away inside-out forehand is a Federer classic. Perhaps his most clutch shot ever. It's what saved him against Haas on his way to the RG title.
Love to watch this anytime. Not only Federers best back hand but one of the best all time considering the situation of the game.. Federer simply the best
At 1-3 in the fifth set of this match...Federer's entire career entered another improbably phase. He has been riding the wave from this set ever since. Watch him now in May 2019 -- he still looks mighty good. Father time will win, but perhaps not for a while yet.
And there was came Wimbledon 2019, a moment the Fed will get over but that his fans may never live down...unless, of course, he improbably wins another slam. Now if he reaches his 2019 fitness level, I'd back him for another slam...but that's a big IF, isn't it?
I love the second point of the video. It's literally ALL of Fed's history against Nadal saying, hit it to backhand, hit it to backhand, hit it to backhand. And it worked.
This match was federer In his TOP form !..the 2020 Australian open he was on 50% of his capabilities !..this match was the best tennis we all wil ever witness for ages to come ,maybe even never to see anyone playing this level of tennis ever again !
Fed has always been a clutch player, his matches are always exciting cus he creates score lines that keeps you on your toe, he comes up with the goods when matters and kind of relaxes other times which keeps the score always ineteresting

It's hard to say who is the goat, Federer is 38 and Rafa and Djoker are 5 and 6 years younger respectively. I'd say that both Raf and Djoker have a few more years left, Fed doesn't. Nadal is only 1 slam behind Fed. Djoker is 4 behind but is about to play in an AO Final which could bring his tally to 17.
My heart hopes he will finish ahead of his 2 rivals but it's likely that he will finish behind them in GS count. No matter what, I think most would agree that he plays the most beautiful brand of tennis, and he is most loved and admired around the world.

Best set ever, greatest performance in the history of tennis, props to Rafa for pushing Roger to his limits.
Why you gotta do nadal's wifey like that with the thumb? haha
she's cute
@@BOZ_11 at least not as annoying as Federers wife....
@@danielkandi4582 she can't annoy since she stays out of the press

Roger is not only legend but also God in tennis, he has special magical tendency for come back games, i love my Roger 😘😘😘😘😍
I remember watching this live! Absolutely legendary clutch performance by federer. Fed went total god mode
This was fedrers best match.
Shankar Das Most epic win at a grand slam. It was incredible
Then you haven't seen him play against world number 1 Sampras at Wimbledon!
@@KrishnenduKes jeje , ok.

Que persona más admirable es Roger Federer..una verdadera leyenda humana...
L'un des meilleurs moments de ma vie !j'étais kom un fou devant cette finale ! Merci Federer ! Is Back !
I couldn’t tell how many times I have seen this 5th set
Diego Bm me too, was a great january day!
Same.
I believe im on my 15th..maybe..lol...love both guys now..but was a roger fan
I couldn't tell how many times I went in tears upon seeing that last championship point
#GOAT
Nothing will ever top this. He went into a superhuman mode. He was playing at an unconscious level.
1000 match of all players is equal to that one set ......u watch everything..backhand forehand...drop shot with technicaly......god mode on federed
Simplemente el mejor de todos los tiempos. Dicho incluso por sus mismos adversarios en la cancha. Grande Roger y tu legado casi inalcanzable !!!
Exacto
Only true Federer fans understand the emotions of this match. I can watch this any number of times!
BEAUTIFUL! So proud of Roger. I knew he still had the fire.
Nadal must of been thinking in that last set "but I'm hitting it to his backhand why am I not winning?!"
Nadal couldn't generate enough topspin. People actually believe Federer had found cure for nadals top spin just because 5 matches
Should watch the women’s final for the Australian open then. Ash Barty pulled out a lot of Federer esque shots
I'm a little too young to have seen MJ play in person. Bummer. I'm emotional all over again! Thanks for the reply.
@@thesoccergod I'm referring to her backwards and away DTL forehand, and the way she glided around the ball to hit inside out winners. There was a lot more to compare to Fed than just her slice.
Still get goosebumps . Love Roger 💕

Poor Xisca I felt for her, as a Federer fan that was my face through most of the fourth set -___-
When Fed is in the Fed mode, he makes pros look like kids
When Rafa is in Rafa mode, he finishes a slam final in 90 mins.
French open 2008
He really looked relaxed here without letting those expectations and cheering from fans get into his mind. He simply needs to shut himself away from world and focus on match and he can win every where over every one except for Rafa on clay.
Roger’s backhand was on fire this match
Thanks for sharing this moment...this was out of blue..I recorded the tears of Roger at the end
Seen this last set so many times, still amazes me, this was his best ever tournament win, no question.
I have missed tennis and Roger so much. I love would for nothing more than to see Federer win another slam in 2021. We bel21ve
That's the best tennis I've ever seen Federer play in that final set. His backhand was so consistently good.
This was needed in Wim 2019.
but in this match he faced with menthal giant Djokovic.
Rog didn't play it bad. He was nervous at the end. He knows he's 38 and the fact that the Next Gen. is coming and it will be harder to win more slams (and he was also tired, 5h+ playing).
But on the other side is Terminator!
His body betrayed him badly there. Usually he closes most matches at Wimbledon with aces as featured in that 100 Wimbledon wins video but didn’t do it there when it mattered the most. I don’t know about him but I have lost mental strength to watch Wimbledon anymore now.
His backhand was on fire
He never missed a single shot
Hard and deep pin point accuracy
Even down the line
The best ever
What a match
What a game
What a beautiful array of shots
Federer
Classic example of 'In The Zone' Stunning performance.
Fue un partido muy hermoso... Que privilegio para mis ojos el poder disfrutar de un alto nivel de tenis.
Federer y Nadal los dos mejores que he visto en mi vida.
Ojalá sigan vigentes por muchos años más. Muchas gracias 👏👏👏
Federer's backhand in that match.. Oh my god.
This tournament was absolutely splendid from Federer! What a comeback this was... miss seeing this man on the court!
My only regret in life is not having bought a ticket to see Federer play! Fingers crossed he recuperates behind the scenes and comes back for 1 more season then wins a grand slam event, that would be my wildest sporting dream along with Messi returning to Barca then winning the league and champions league
Man I watched this whole match on my phone laying on the floor in the living room of my apt, in the late/early hours of the morning on the east coast. I had to work a couple of hours after the end of the match. Gave up a good night’s sleep to watch this match. It was awesome. The best his backhand has ever been.
That final set was the best tennis I have ever seen
Pure magic from both players but Roger was possessed
Сколько раз просматриваю эту игру.....И каждый раз восхищаюсь мастерством этих феноменальных гениев современного тенниса.Браво!
by far the best match I've ever seen in my life.
1:10 It is VERY rare to see Nadal give the "wtf am I supposed to do?" face
No se puede negar la clase y exquisitez del Más Grande jugador de la Historia del tenis ROGER FEDERER.
That 2017 backhand was something special
Federers winning reactions are the best.
Such emotion even after all these titles, what a bliss to witness this
Still have good memories about this match... nadal asked a lot of questions and federer gave a lot of answers... eventually nadal ran out of questions to asked
The last set is why we love the sport! these 2 men have made the sport what it is today! I cry everytime i see this set!
Not to forget Novak.
Nearly repeated this vs Nole in Wim 2019. Hurts so much.
3:04 look the muscle difference between right and left hand.
Damn
These 2 were "put on earth" to bring smiles and joy into people's heart and homes. Period ❤️😇 #Respect
Had the pleasure to be at this great match, amazing day.
That rally on 40-40 on 4-3 Games. OH GOD
The Most Beautiful Match and The Most Beautiful Final Ever, I will always remember that Magic and WondeRFul Day!!!
2 absolute titans of the game going all out. you love to see it
I don't see this kind of backhand anymore from roger in 2019
Nicholas Poh you know what, Roger's abilities cannot be explained that easily.
It's still not bad
u gotta see matches at Madrid Open. Backhand is as solid as it can be. Just below the IW 2017.
Rajeev Singh i agree, his backhand looks pretty good right now. He got quite a few winners with it.
Then you got watch Roger Federer vs S Wawrinka Roland Garros quarter final match 2019
The fade-away inside-out forehand is a Federer classic. Perhaps his most clutch shot ever. It's what saved him against Haas on his way to the RG title.
Rogerَ s backhand is extraordinary !
Wow what a high quality tennis played by genious Roger federer best in the world.
Most top rated tennis duels feels like a boxing match. This was pure poetry in motion.
I remembered youtube didn't block this live game.
Happy old days.
I will never forget that Grand Slam from Federer! It was pure perfection!!! 🤍🤍
Hope Fed wins a second RG title this year!!

That's a motherfucking king right there
Fed has always been a clutch player, his matches are always exciting cus he creates score lines that keeps you on your toe, he comes up with the goods when matters and kind of relaxes other times which keeps the score always ineteresting
Just one word to describe this man G.O.A.T.

Roger is "The Goat", the best ever.
@RATAN SHIL also do watch 2006,2007 and 2017 wimbledon matches .
My heart hopes he will finish ahead of his 2 rivals but it's likely that he will finish behind them in GS count.
No matter what, I think most would agree that he plays the most beautiful brand of tennis, and he is most loved and admired around the world.
I love that neither one ever holds back when playing each other. Even though they are such close friends.
THAT DOWN THE LINE FOREHAND WOULD GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME
This is the best of Roger Federer the way he this year it's make me crying because his win I always like this when he losses I cry too when he played I always want him to win I don't want him to losse I hope you get well soon look after your knee before the Tennis start wish you all the best God Bless take care and all of yous stay safe from the Corona virus
