I do have a question. If I was to release music it will probably be through distrokid, because they upload music to all the stores at once, would there be 1 target to aim for in terms of lufs?
I just started back with music production after a 10 year break. It’s almost like I’m starting over. Everything has changed so much. This video is 5 years old and I’m trying to learn from it.
Your RMS after after the limiter has changed everything for me. I can finally settle on a mix that isn't perfect and be somewhat satisfied. This one of the most important mixing videos I've ever came across. I wish more mixers were as honest as you. Thank you, thank you and thank you. Devine is what your are dude. Peace!
This is a great explanation. Thank you for delivering quality content Sean! It's so helpful. I've been an active viewer for a while now. Maybe like 5 years. And I return these videos frequently to help my grow my engineering skills. You are appreciated!
I always use three loudness meters: RMS (usually for low frequencies, bass notes), LUFS_short for control mix with&without vocal, calibrated K12. And sometimes VU meter.
Great! You are explained very understandable manner. I am new to audio editing. I have a spec for loudness/peak. How to achieve this. Loudness Guidelines: All audio work must meet the following requirements 1. The targeted loudness should be -16 LUFS 2. Short form programming (Less than 60 sec) shouldn't exceed -14 LUFS 3. The True Peak Level shouldn't exceed -3 dB TP to prevent clipping when using lossy encoders All measurements should be taken for the whole program
YOOO deadass thank you for explaining the difference between RMS and LUFS so clearly and detailed too in this video. Watched a lot videos about the two and never could wrap my head around it.
Thanks to you man that we as amateur producers can learn a lot of things in this industry through your tutorial, learned a lot over the years but not so as i do now from your videos.
Great vid thanks. Still not sure I understand what should I look for or what number to target the RMS for (when producing and mixing, not for mastering if it makes any sense)
Great video! Thanks a lot! But i have a question! Do you release a video about how to deliever your music to a target LUFS and RMS? If it`s there please link the video! Thanks!
For clarification @ 8:40 the -11.1 is fair or should it keep going to -14? I understand but I don't understand the numbering. Is -11.1 lower or Louder then -14. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for this video I found it helpful, even though I’m just starting to understand what all this means and apply to this all my tracks, it’s great to have a guide and I just downloaded levels and Expose, to get my mixes ready for other streaming services like Spotify and sound cloud again, as I feel there at that professional stage before release
My problem is when i finish producing & mastering my song at the average of -14LUFS and comparing my track to my references song and also others songs , seems very quite and very weak any solution!!!!!
Interesting video. I never heard of LUFS until I watched it. Ok. Question... If I have two identical speakers except one is rated at 100 RMS watts and the other is rated at 250 RMS watts, will there be a difference in LUFS? Thanks!
Sir Please Reply the Question - How can I set the lowest true peak? in my case I target 0.1 But its always goes 2.5 DB, So tell how i can get lowest peak... Or 2.5 db peak is good or bad ? Please reply soon....
I'm really enjoying the videos dude. One Q: So what's the difference between Peak and True Peak? I see there's the option in that level meter to have different levels. Thanks, Sean!
thanks Elliott! True peak is a more accurate peak reading that takes into account the conversion from digital to analog (which can result in overs that peak doesn't detect)
Hi, Sean! As always, your tutorials are awesome! I just need to clarify something? If I have a -6dB headroom on my master output, and the mix should be at -12dB to -10dB RMS level while maintaining the peaks of -6dB to -3dB Peak level without clipping, is that situation good for a mix before sending it for mastering? Thanks for the help. Cheers, Ivan
Hi, I have a question. I play a lot of different music (multi-genre, from 1980 to 2020) on hi-fi soundsystem as a DJ, and i would like to adjust my song's volume (but not changing anything regarding their dynamic) - (Of course, the platinum notes software is usefull, but it also often change the dynamic and i do not want that). Otherwise, I noticed that normalizing through "true peak" on random software is not very helpfull neither (most of the time, the high frequencies peak at one moment of the song but it does not represent the entire volume of the song) - I would prefer to diminish all my songs volume based on low & low/medium frequencies (representing bass & kick) in order to preserve enough amplitude and space for the high & medium/high frequencies expression and respecting the dynamic. Do you know any software, tool, or have you any advice ?

Spotify - Minus 14 RMS - Root Mean Square Measuring a short term average (mean). Gives a something like a perceived loudness but not as accurate as LUFS. @@SeanDivine Thanks! I am working in Digital Perfomer, they seem to have no sufficient metering options in this matter though. Actually quite a disappointment here ;-) I also noticed some differences in the accuracy between the Waves WLM Plus you reviewed in an other video, and the Ozone metering within the maximiser...
GREAT video Sean, thank you. Quick question.... I am trying to set the levels on drum sample patches for live use, trying to get them all as unified in level as possible so they dont jump out of the FOH and monitor mixes... What way of measureing would you recommend before tweaking the output levels accodingly?
Hey Maurice, I would use True Peak and set the levels for all samples to unity -6dB or so. That will give you some headroom in the analog conversion to work with and as long as it's below 0 TP, they shouldn't blow out the monitors :)
Love the tutorial super helpful!🙏 new to all this so I apologize ahead of time if my terminology is off I have my Intergrated Lufs sitting at a cool -14 but my true peak is at -3.3 db TH-cams recommendation is -1 db do I need to get this as close to -1 db as possible or as long as I’m under the -1db I’m okay?
TH-cam will NOT raise the master level, only reduce it. My advice would be to master competitively at -1dB (not recklessly) for consistency and let the DSPs reduce it.
Hey Sean, cheers for the content as always. My favorite mixing/mastering resource by far... So I have one question on this topic... I have an album that is in the later stages of being mixed. I want to get all of the tracks at the same perceived loudness so that I can be sure I have a cohesive sound and balanced levels throughout the album. To do this, would I just choose an LUFS level to set all of the tracks to? Then for example, if they are all set to the same LUFS, but one tracks snare is way louder than all the other tracks snares, that would be a trustworthy reference to turn that snare down to create a cohesive sound throughout the record?
hey Keenan, personally I rely more on true peak and RMS values for this while keeping an eye on LUFS integrated to measure overall dynamics. I think you'd be much better off with a short term reading like RMS for consistency with snares, kicks, etc. LUFS integrated is best for long term readings (overall loudness of the entire song)
So in simple terms, would this be a good way to get an overall consistent sound on my drums throughout the album? 1. First, make sure all tracks have the same audible loudness 2. Second, balance drum levels to be consistant throughout all tracks, while maintaining the same audible loudness 3. Lastly, shoot for having all tracks at the same audible loudness as well as a consistant drum level
So, when measuring Integrated LUFS for a song per say, You would have to let the whole song play in order to get a true reading of what LUFS its at? I'm currently trying to Master my tracks, but have only really been looking at short term LUFS at the loudest point in the song? Should I be looking at integrated LUFS for the whole song or certain sections to get the right reading? I've looked everywhere for this answer btw! :) Sam.
I record classical music and am struggling with balancing the fidelity of the overall dynamics (specially with orchestras) and the "listenability" of the mastered recording, much in respect to, as I see it, the perceived loudness Any ideas?

If it's a video for TH-cam, you should stick with -14 LUFS.
You can show all your clicks at first ? I can't find same window's on my project. It's hilarious lessons bro

True peak is a momentary peak reading. Integrated LUFS is a long term measurement for perceived loudness.

thanks Ivan! Yes, as long as you have 4-6 dB of peak headroom, that's usually more than enough (unless the mix is totally off)
Hi Sean! Thnx for the clear video, really helpful. Question: what software brand are the Level Meter and the LUFS Meter you pull up at 0:13? Thnx!
So basically -1db peak is the new standard for delivering a record to Streaming Services?
essentially just below 0dB TRUE peak
