This drum is a 14" x 5" Slingerland Aluminum No. 140 Student Model snare drum. It has Stick Saver hoops, and features all original hardware and components.

I believe I have the 8 lug version of this snare and it is the best sounding snare I own out of 13 snares. Used mine had no snare beds somehow so I filled them in and it sounds absolutely perfect to me!
I was so surprised how much I liked this drum after fixing it up. I'm def using it in rotation of my snares.

Are you using smaller snarewires on this drum?
I believe I’m using the original snare wires on this drum, and I think they are maybe 12-16 strand? It’s def under 20.

@@tReShertReSh I don’t think so, but I did just reset the ones that were on there when I got it. In either case, maybe I busted some secret to a great snare sound.
Not enough of what the drum sound like. More playing less talking.
Well, for me this video was more about the restoration, but I at least wanted to include some sort of sound sample. The entire backing track was also recorded with the snare.

I recently purchased an identical snare but with 8 lugs. The comparable drums back in the day were the Ludwig Acrolite which now sell new for $450 and up. If they were still produced I don't think they would be marketed as student model like they were back in the day. They really do sound great.
Agreed, though this and the most recent Gretsch aluminum snare I restored have a much thinner shell than an Acrolite
Picked up same snare love it sounds incredible but I was kind of shocked at the seam mines Exactly the same doesn’t line up either so I guess it’s good at least they’re all the same and mine is not defective but surprised how this seam is so ugly besides that put vintage Ambassador sounds incredible I can’t say enough good things about this snare
I know, I had the same exact shock when I finished this, expected it to be out the door, but I love it. It's certainly an underrated vintage snare.
I was about to ask you about the shell. It’s quite unique, the edges are orally bend, not the typical 45 degrees. Does it have a snare bed?
I think so, just not as dramatic as the standard as the drums with more traditional construction

Would you say the aluminum slingerland lighter weight than a wood slingerland with the same hardware?
For sure, the aluminum shell is so thin that it weighs next to nothing, a wood shell can be fairly light (depending on the density of the wood) but would all be heavier than this shell.
Think the aluminum slingerland would be suitable for jazz?

You can weld aluminum but its famously fussy and easy to damage and burn, but welded aluminum snares absolutely exist.

There aren't NEARLY enough Slingerlands in circulation in the UK
Same with vintage Premier kits in the US.
@@malonedrum Mate I almost shed a tear now thinking about all those (at the time; new) vintage Premier kits that were knocking around the schools I went to. I grew up about 5 miles from the Premier factory so they used to supply all the local music departments new gear. I think now about the gorgeous kits that students scratched their names into, set on fire, jumped on like a trampoline to break the skins. Oh boy. Youth is truly wasted on the young!

A friend of mine gave me one of these. It's the 8 lug version. It has the exact same issue with the seam. When I got it, it was bent out of round. Since there's no flange on the inside, I just bent it back into shape and it sounds great.
Interesting they made multiple lug variations on it. But I know back then that was really the determining factor on quality in a snare
Great drum and you can weld aluminum. It's called TIG welding. That's how they make aluminum boats.
That makes total sense! I’ve heard of tug welding but obviously I’m familiar with aluminum boats. I wonder Slingerland opted for this seam which seems so flimsy or hobbled together instead? Must have been cheaper or less labor intensive.
Score! Just picked up one of these from an estate sale and it needs some TLC, so I'll be studying this video carefully. Mine's an 8 lug version with reinforcing plates inside for each lug, except for the lug that is on top of the shell seam. At that location, there is a welded piece of ribbed aluminum, shell material it appears, instead of the backing plate. I think I'm going to retro-fit a small plate to the snare throw to secure the snare cord, I don't like the idea of tying those either. Thanks, great video! Google search brought it right up.
