Niger Military Coup Explained.
Elite troops in Niger have announced a coup on state television. They said they had dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the nation's borders. President Mohamed Bazoum has been held by troops from the presidential guard since 26th July He was promised Washington's "unwavering support" in a call from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. After the coup announcement, Blinken called for the release of President Bazoum.UN has also expressed grave concern.
Niger is in the Sahel region of Africa. It has been a victim of the Islamic State’s terror. Bazoum was a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militancy in West Africa.
