The main differance between your reviews and others found on TH-cam is you give them as if you're advising a close friend. Thanks again.

I bought those following your suggestions over the years:
    -10.5mm fisheye
    -20mm 1.8G
    -35mm f2
    -60mm 2.8 macro
    -85mm 1.8G
    -180mm 2.8
All excellent. Only the 85 mm 1.8 g does not use that much because I prefer the Tokina 100 mm Macro, which I also have thanks to your suggestion, because it is simply better for portrait.
Would like to buy also a long beast but cannot afford
    Love prime lenses.

Hi Ken. I'm looking to buy my first dslr, but I'm not sure what to buy. I'm living in South Africa and I don't have to drive far to get close to amazing wildlife, so I was thinking of a second hand Nikon d7100 or 7000 to save some money. Which lenses would you recommend, keeping in mind that I won't have that much money to to throw around?

I remember that you said the 85 1.4D is not worth is compared to the 1.8D. Now it’s confusing. Also it seems to be 105mm f2 DC instead of 100mm

Curious whether you think the Nikkor 100mm f/2D is superior to the 100mm Tokina you love, money aside? Also, finally picked up a 60mm f/2.8D on your recommendation. $200 used. Great little lens on my D750. Wonderful color.

check out for this one, Ken: th-cam.com/video/3x7As-85U7E/w-d-xo.html explaining:
    - micro-contrast is a trade-off against resolution
    - there is no such thing as absolute resolution of a lens
    - 100% contrast a lens might show until15 linepairs/mm only, while same lens shows (let's say) 70lp/mm still with 10% contrast (10% is the international standart to judge resolution)
    - if you want a lens keeping high (close to 100%) contrast far up to (let's say) 30lp/mm, the lens designer necessaryly has to trade it against the high frequencies (explained at 12:30 - yellow line has a bigger amplitude up to high frequenzies but then brakes down suddently showing no signal anymore - while pink lowers contrast (amplitude) already at much lower frequencies but fades out slowly, reaching to higher frequencies
    - none of both is better or worse, it's a choice to be made by the lens designer
    - in the 60's and 70's for BW-fotography fading to higher resolution by giving up high micro-contrast was chosen
    - lenses of the 80's and 90's were made with higher micro-contrast but less maximum-resolution for slide-fotography
    - current lens-designs are sold according to there resolution-values, so bad for micro-contrast
    - at 15:30 he explains: high resolution survives slight unprecise mounting and so it is much more forgiving with plastiky, pressed lenses. While micro-contrast needs absolute (!) precision and will never be found in a cheap lenses. The glas and the calculation of SIGMAs are wonderfull, and so is their resolution, but they save money on absolute precise mounting...

      @tw6530 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@KenTheoriaApophasis for that reason I summarized the keypoints in English. Hope, my writing together with the drawings on the blackboard in that clip make things clear... You are one of the very few to talk about something like micro-contrast, which's existence is even denied by so many on the internet. For those, a lens either is sharp or it is not. MTF for them is absolute. But actually it is two-dimensional: Sharpness is a function of contrast and vice versa. Lens A shows 95% on the MTF for 50 lp/mm but 0% for 60lp/mm (to overstate it), while lens B shows 100% on the MTF only up to 15 lp/mm, 40% at 60 lp/mm and still 10% at 70lp/mm. Since 10% is the international standard, lens B formaly has the higher resolution and is measurable sharper. Lens A instead has less maximum resolution, but appears sharper to the eye (3D-Pop) thanks to the higher contrast in the fine detail (micro-contrast). Which lens will be the winner in a sharpness-test? Which lens would you prefer?

thanks :) I still might pull the trigger on the Zeiss. Shrugs. I've been using the Voigtlander 58mm and the old Nikon 105 F2.5 for portraits and sometimes the Nikon 80-200mm but wanted to either upgrade the 105 or get an 85mm.

    • @MichaelCantwell
      @MichaelCantwell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

One last question if you don't mind. I already have the Nikon 105mm F2.5 manual lens and love it. I know the Nikkor Dc F2 is auto focus, but is there really that much of a difference in sharpness and Bokeh between the two lenses? Would you spend the cash for the upgrade if you weren't making money with the lens? I do like having good lenses but I'm having a hard time justifying shelling out $650 or so for the DC lens. I know in one of your videos you suggested the older 135 MM 2.8(which I own) was as good as the 135 DC. Does the same apply between the 105 2.5 and the 105 F2 DC in your opinion? thanks

Love your videos, dude. I'm planning to convert my Sony A7R II to retain maximum information texture in the high frequencies.
Since it's easy to adapt any lens to use with the Sony A7R series, what would be your most recommended lenses regarding micro contrast of all times (excluding Leucas because I can't afford 5k on a lens and I don't think they would play well with the sensors micro lenses removed)?
Also, what's your opinion on the Hasselblad X1D and it's lenses? 🤔

Greetings, undisputed master of camera lenses (no sarcasm intended).
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I probably missed the part where you mentioned why you don’t really review Canon glass or cameras in general.
On the topic of modern lenses, I just wanted to ask if you had the opportunity to play around with the 2 new Canon Lenses: 50mm F1.2 and the 28-70mm F2
I’ve seen some great feedback on these particular lenses and wanted to hear your unbiased opinion.
    Cheers from London

Hi Ken, so I do not see the 24mm f2.8 D as not in the best lenses.
I am looking for an inexpensive wide angle, and if I refer to the list (and tks to @laz arus to make is in the comments) then it should be the 35mm?
I was looking into your old videos and saw various things but you brought all that today ;-)
Both 24mm and 35mm on ebay from Japan are "same" price (35 more expensive), so this is why I am asking, just to be sure to make the good choice.
I would love the 20mm 1.8, but not now...
