Yes, I was a young kid but I do remember when Elevator Action and Jungle Hunt/King were brand new in the arcades. Some arcades in that era still had several older 70s games that were black-and-white. It was really cool to come up in that time because every month new games were coming out that demonstrated greater and greater technical capabilities, as well as seeing the establishing of what would become major genres. For quite some time these were the most powerful computers you could see and experience in person. Now in retrospect I am in awe of the designers and coders who were working within extremely limited systems!
@@VideoGameEsotericaI played the 2nd violin part of Night On Bald Mountain in high school for an All-State audition, but I didn’t make it in to the group that year. I got in the year after that playing Beethoven’s 5th!
I remember playing Elevator Action and Jungle Hunt at the arcade when I was 10, fond memories. Looking forward to having time this weekend to play them again on my MiSTer.
I remember playing Elevator Action at a Stop-N-Go liquor store in Brea California. They ended up replacing it with a Ghosts and Goblins cabinet. My quarter lasted longer in the Elevator Action machine.
I was not born when this came out but looking forward to giving some of them a go. So glad I bought a mister before the chip shortages and the price going nuts, such an amazing project
Night on bald mountain for the Galaga clone. I think arcade speakers in a cab can add a low pass filter effect they have a sound setting in mister to mimic that.
Nice! Looking forward to playing some of these in the near future. I grew up playing Elevator Action and Jungle Hunt in the arcades until it was ported to the C64. Pirate Pete looks like just a reskinning of Jungle Hunt. Can't say the others look familiar to me, but maybe I was just drawn to those two games in particular.
Yes. I've played in arcades: Elevator Action (a lot), Jungle King and HIghway Race (although I was 6-7 years old). and Bio Attack is like a non-licence game of the movie "Fantastic Voyage" (because the start in an arm and finished at the head)
Pretty sure I only played elevator action back on this board back in the day. Interesting to see Jungle King and how close it plays to Jungle Hunt. Definitely playing Bio Attack! Love trying super creative/weird games Great video! Thanks for the update!
8:45 *"Leave me a comment down below if you know what that song is, I would be curious who can tell"* It's called 'Night on Bald Mountain' and was composed by Modest Mussorgsky.
@@VideoGameEsoterica It's been used in a lot of stuff. I first clocked it as regognisable in 'What the Heck?' - a stage from the original Earthworm Jim.
Oh wow, I remember playing Pirate Pete (or a rip-off of it maybe) on my dad's TI-99 when I was little before I got an NES, haven't thought about that game in a long time. Never realized that was originally a Taito game
It’s fun to see what was going on from before we were around. Slower viewer video today though and I bet that’s because the nostalgia for this era / my audiences overall she lacks cross over. Which is actually good for me to know research wise
If I remember correctly there's a really interesting and well done remake of elevator action for the PS3. It had different playable characters and a bunch of other cool options
Remember playing Jungle King and Wild Western growing up. Don’t recognise pirate Pete, but looks like they reused the rope swinging mechanics - if you’ve written the code shame to waste in just one game
I had Jungle King for my 2600 and played it to death. I'd say I tolerated the 2600 rather than enjoyed it a lot because I'd had a C64 before which died. Nobody had NES where I was living so it went right from that to Mega Drive. I never saw any of these games in the arcade as I was born in '83. The only early 80's stuff I saw was Qix, Defender and Pac Land.
I've always imagined Ronald Reagan playing Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja. 😁 It's the first arcade I've played and completed when I was 8 or 9, so I might be biased. I remember I actually thought it was official and was made by the White House or some shit. So it was not like the other arcades for little kids, this was serious business. Now that I think about it, I was probably 6 or 7 yo actually. lol
Gamer Reagan is my spirit animal
I’m pinning this comment lol
Excellent breakdown. Loved the video.
It was a fun one to make. Now I will end up playing Elevator Action too much again
@@VideoGameEsoterica by the Reagan definitely had an arcade machine

Oh man seeing the transition from that to color just have been a fun time. Like 2D to 3D
Played Elevator Action and Jungle Hunt/King in the arcade growing up. Elevator Action was a great value for a quarter.
Elevator Action still 100% holds up as a great game
Nice. I don’t have a MiSTer, but I’m still enjoying these games on my my Taito Egret II Mini.
I’ve heard those are a fun time
Jungle Hunt was one of my old favourites back in the day, its still fun
Now you can play it again on MiSTer :)
The music from Space Cruiser is 'Mussorgsky - Night on Bald Mountain'. I was curious and looked it up.
One person knew it. Just a weird curiosity of mine who would recognize it

Shoulda let you in first time! Because I said so lol
Elevator Actions and Elevator Action returns are two of my favorite arcade games. This is great news!
They are seriously two “couldn’t improve them if you tried” games
I used to play Elevator Action in the arcade in the early 90's whenever the Street Fighter II cabinets were too crowded. Always a good time.
Yes my arcade had a cab too back in the day. Long after it was new but I still loved playing it

Enjoy it! Especially Elevator Action. Game is just a straight 10/10
25k subs congratulations keep it up with the awesome work 🙂
Thanks so much :) next stop 50K!
@@VideoGameEsotericano problem anytime 👍 🙂and then 100k 😃😃😃
I can only hope :)
I'm glad you are enjoying the core!
Great core. Anything that runs Elevator Action is awesome in my book!
Oh, I was most definitely born and hanging around in arcades as much as I could get away with in 1983. I was 15 at the time.
Got be beat by some years. I didn’t see the inside of an arcade till the late 80a
I love that anime intro for Returns. They are so intense about the elevator action returning.
It has returned! From the grave 😂
I remember playing Elevator Action at a Stop-N-Go liquor store in Brea California. They ended up replacing it with a Ghosts and Goblins cabinet. My quarter lasted longer in the Elevator Action machine.
I mean if you are gonna replace a great game…they replaced it with another great game!

Yes. It’s def been worth the cost of admission
Night on bald mountain for the Galaga clone. I think arcade speakers in a cab can add a low pass filter effect they have a sound setting in mister to mimic that.
its fun when they use old music; same with Parodius repurposing classical tracks
I immediately recognized the song as also being in the second level on Earthworm Jim, had to look up Musorgsky after that.
That’s right I was in earthworm Jim wasn’t it
Night on bald mountain - the piece I'm convinced was inspiration for the ghost house music on Super Mario World.
Now that you mention it that checks out

Yes Pirate Pete seems like Taito was in the double dipping mood
The first time I played Jungle Hunt was in the mid 80s on the Atari 5200. It's nice to have the arcade original on Mister.
Yes it seems like a lot of people today first placed these on an Atari system

Bio Attack is so weird. In a charming way
Love Elevator Action. But its sequel is an S tier game. Hope that version makes its way to MiSTer some day.
Jotego has mentioned F3 support one day. Fingers crossed

I played Elevator Action on NES but didn't know it was an arcade game until recently
Yep. Got it’s start in arcades then got ported everywhere
