I added a personal trainer to my budget in September. A long term big budget item. I have osteoporosis and am not willing to risk it side effects from the medication that my aunt experienced. I need a coach to keep my form on point and keep me from injuring myself.
I hadn’t been in an H&M or Zara for years and just went over the holidays. I was shocked at the horrible fabrics, poor fit and bad construction. Ive worked in the fashion industry for almost 20 years and it still shocked me! I want to teach more people how to do simple mends like sewing on buttons and hemming, or fixing a little rip. Continue to fall in love with the clothes you already have is my 2024 philosophy!
i stopped getting monthly manicures at a salon last summer. for years i was convinced i can't shape my own nails, however all it took was getting a decent pair of clippers. this will save me 120 euro a year which might not seem that much money, however this amount is approximately how much i spend on a weekend staycation in my favourite city by the sea so i'm more than happy to use the money to get a break i will actually appreciate
Yes!!! I learned from another TH-camr that u can use regular nail polish color on your nails, put a clear gel topcoat over the regular colored nail polish & cure it w/a UV lamp. If you’re careful, your nail polish will last longer & bc u used a gel top coat, it stays shiny & doesn’t fade after a couple of days. This technique also strengthens your nails too bc u can take the colored nail polish & the gel topcoat off w/regular nail polish remover. Another tip is to order a glass nail file off of Amazon for like $12. I absolutely love mine & u get such a nicer smoother filed nail. I hope this helps.
I agree with this but I also feel like in my 40s I've actually worked on kinda "being" my fantasy self more...like I used to have bohemian inspired dresses I never wore because when would I? Now I swap those out for shorts and tees in the summer, and actually go out to a 70s bar with friends where the dresses work and don't seem like too much after all. So fun!
When there's a sale on clothes I've started asking myself "would I buy this if it was full price?" that's really helped me realize that I would buy clothes because they were on sale/cheap not because I actually liked the piece of clothing. As a plus size woman it's hard not to have the scarcity mindset with clothes (there's only 2 stores in all of Ottawa that carry my size), but I'm trying to change that and play with pieces in my closet. In the summer I bought a swim pass from the city and while I initially was worried about how much it was, it has been 100% worth it. Swimming is my favourite form of exercise and I can't believe I made myself go to the gym when I absolutely hated it 😅
Swimming is great! But be careful. It's not a weight bearing exercise so won't help with bone density. It's very important for women to do some weight lifting to make our bones strong because post menopause our bones can become weak very easily
Thinking in general about what can be minimized for betterment is a great task every year. I recently got a new phone plan, reduced cable which saves me $$$ a month. I purchased less than 30 clothing items in 2023 (mostly secondhand) and have minimal beauty/skincare additions. It’s not just less money, it’s less time to manage. My time is valuable, maybe even more valuable than money.
Love this! Some things for me... 1. Subscription meal kits. This was super convenient when I worked at the office and got home late, but now that I WFH I have more time to cook from scratch since I don't have to commute, and its way cheaper. 2. Clothing for occasions I rarely go to. I used spend way too much on buying fancy dresses or skirts, when I don't really go out that much. And when I do go out I am much more comfortable in casual clothes, so I'd rather try to dress up something casual. Where I want to spend more is jewelry, like investing in a few timeless staples. I own very little jewelry and hope it can help me add some interest to my fairly minimal wardrobe.
I find the same issue with alcohol, I was wondering if it was just me! Drinks are really expensive where I live and I don't miss cutting a $20 cocktail from my dinner bill.
2 types of protein (chicken and type of seafood), 2 types of vegetables (sometimes we get creative here), 2 types of fruits, a starch (usually potatoes since we have many shelf stable options at home to go through), yogurt, and any pantry basics to refill. This is the general formula my boyfriend and I now use, and it allows us enough restrictions that we don't over purchase in a category and still allow us variety from week to week. I still find creative ways to jazz things up further with things we already have on hand.
Eating out....we always say to each other, "How much meat could we have bought with the price of this meal?" We keep our grocery budget very minimal -- meat, dairy, a tiny bit of veg. It makes life so much easier. Eating well can also help with spending on medical issues.
I also found myself quitting alcohol from one day to the next at the beginning of August. I was just fed up with it - unnecessary money and unnecessary calories. Since then, I've had alcohol twice on "special occasions" and... I wasn't particularly impressed, nor did I miss it. Never thought it would happen to me! 😂
Unlike retailers, where I agree the quality has been declining (more synthetic blends, unlined pants), you've just been getting better. I so appreciate your forthrightness. Being brave and showing up as yourself on your journey is a winning formula.
Fewer makeup and skincare products-definitely! I have found that the more junk you plaster on your face every day, the more problems you have to try to cover up later. My daily routine is nothing more than brow pencil, mascara and a dab of blush on my cheekbones and a swipe of lip gloss! The natural look. And people never think I’m as old as I am. Foundation, etc. clogs my pores and makes me break out. Then you have to cover it with more…It’s a vicious cycle.
I stopped getting my hair dyed at the salon when my first son was born. I don’t miss it AT ALL! I had myself convinced my hair was mousey or dirty dishwater-y & I HAD to get it balayaged 4x a year. Now I get compliments on my natural hair color all the time.
I’ve given up pedicures. I live in the south and wear sandals for most of the year but the price kept rising and the quality of the work diminishing. I watched a few videos and learned to give myself a pretty good one.
I have done this also. I read a book called Rescue Your Nails by Ji Baek and it helped a lot. I feel like it was a gamechanger for me and my nails have been so much nicer since.
We frequently order water with lemon as our out-to eat meal beverages & make coffee at home or the office. We often will bring lunches from home instead of ordering out Huge money saver there. 😊❤☕☕ Thanks, Christina, for these great tips.
The thing that a lot of people forget is the concept of value. Not monetary value but value to your life. Personal finance is not about not spending any money is about spending it mindfully in things that actually bring value to your life. And I think this is one of the ways we’ll beat consumerism. We’re not money making machines that live to feed even bigger machines. The world shouldn’t be a pyramid scheme.
This year will be my first attempt to a no buy/low buy year when it comes to clothes, shoes & purses. I practically purchased a whole new wardrobe over the last two years. I have the means to make these purchases, but it has become overwhelming and I really want to STOP! I want to learn to embrace what I have and become creative with styling my wardrobe pieces that I already own. Thanks for your inspiration.
Pretty much gave up drinking in 2020 and not missed it at all. Charity (thrift) shops are my mini department stores, swopped out to a budget supermarket and use every discount/loyalty scheme that I can find... this means that next year we should be able to move to a 2 bed place in the Scottish Highlands. We're 48 and all we really want to do is travel, see gigs and comedy shows and be "doing" rather than "having." Happy new year, Christina - really loved your channel this year 🎉🎉
My mother an father were so frugal. I grew up like that an at the age of 81 I am still frugal. Under these circumstances I have been able to support myself in my later years. I still will travel around town to save a dime😊 whatever you can do to save money do it. It's a challenge but we'll worth it when you see that extra $adding up.

Together with getting off the trendmill / away from fast fashion, food and reducing food waste is my passion. :) There's nothing wrong with recipe repeating, just as there's nothing wrong with outfit repeating especially if you're eating things you actually enjoy.
I find fast food makes me feel terrible, I think it’s all the sodium in the food. Alcohol really affects my sleep so I don’t drink it anymore. All your tips are terrific 👍🏼
I am similar to you. I haven’t had fast food for years and don’t miss it. I feel yucky after eating it and can’t believe how I lived on fast food as a child-I was an ultra-picky eater. My alcohol tolerance is practically zero. Easy ways to save money for both of us!
Love this! One thing I cut was supplements. I realized I don’t need a vitamin/powder for everything. I still use some but have cut it down to what I feel truly works for me.
You’re so right! Unless a supplement is medically prescribed by my doctor I no longer get sucked into the hype. Therefore I only take calcium, Vitamin D and Iron.

I gave up buying lots of stuff and in turn I spent money doing home renovations myself (cheaply). I even just finished painting the entire house for $200 (exterior) whereas the interior cost me a bit more. Proud of my learning to say ‘no’ to things.
I was always taught to eat at home, meal plan, homemade freezer meals and keep it simple. New and different means clutter and overflowing. The one time I eat out is a rare weekend/ holiday or a rare social occasion.
With regards to take aways/delivery foods: some of the delivery apps offer a discount on quiet weeknights, so picking a Tuesday as your "no cook treat" day can save you more money

These are all great, I’ll add - buying coffee take out instead of making your own, not setting a food budget (I am whole food/plant based), hoarding food (over stuffed pantry), I used exercise/relaxation as stimulation (walking, hiking, reading, beach going, tub soaking) as apposed to shopping/buying items
Going plant-based saved me so much money - and I'm so much healthier for it. I have also cut back almost completely on processed/pre-packaged foods and make most of our meals at home.

I stopped buying take away coffee on my way to work. The cost has really snuck up and I can make one in a keep cup at home for a fraction of the cost. Books. I found a great library app that has e books and audio books. It’s changed my life! Manicures. They cost a lot of money and my nails got wrecked.
I stopped going to a fancy salon and go to Fantastic Sam’s. I found a stylist I like and am getting better cuts than at the fancy salon for a huge savings. I also color my own hair and do not get professional manicures.
I have been working a retail job since the week before Black Friday and now only have five shifts left! I wasn’t supposed to be seasonal, in fact I was the full time assistant manager, but being the one whose job it was to convince people to buy more became so heavy because of my personal preferences around spending. I also started shopping more just because the employee discount on top of clearance was so good. Turns out I’m not a retail girly. My time budget is changing from working this job to finally expressing my creativity and submitting musical compositions to publishers. That, and I’m pregnant, so I’d much rather spend money on diapers than shoes I’ll wear twice!
I do love to try out new recipes (and like the challenge of using up odds and ends of ingredients) but I have a trick for keeping my grocery budget under control. I have a large chalkboard, which a local school was throwing out, where I write down EVERY SINGLE recipe I can make with what I currently have in the house. Even obvious things like tapioca pudding, pancakes, etc. That way, I don't feel tempted to go to the store yet when I can still put together tons of breakfast options, baked goods, dinners, and sweet treats. When I go shopping, I first write down the names of all the recipes I'm making in the coming week, with what I need to buy for each listed underneath. As soon as I get home from the store, I transfer the names of all those recipes straight to the Menu Board. So it stays up to date. This little routine helps keep me from always thinking I need to go shopping because I'm out of food!
Your list is very similar to mine. I've cut out cable tv and travel souvenirs. In 2024, I plan to reduce takeout/delivery, reduce coffee shop purchases by making it at home, stop buying smoothies and make those at home, and purchase no more than 20 pieces for my wardrobe. I'm more focused on reducing quantity, versus quality and cost. Looking forward to your content and new inspiration next year!♥
I'm with you on quitting alcohol! I've been finding the same, and have reduced my consumption to almost nothing (I've had 3 drinks in the past 8 months), and I definitely feel better all around. I'm also glad you mentioned fast fashion retailers and investing in quality and shopping second hand first. Some things I'm spending more money on are bottled salad dressings and take out 🙃 While this is not something I want to keep up long term, our family has had a busy year of building a new house while continuing to work full time and parent, so any short cuts have been worth the spend.
Most of these, I'm right there with you. Except food. We spend A LOT on food, and would gladly cut back in 100 other places before changing how we eat. And when I say we spend on food, I mean food for the house, not take out or restaurants. Food is what I live for, and it brings me a ridiculous amount of joy.
One of the biggest things I’m going to do this year is to stop watching haul videos as well as stop going to the stores. My clothes shopping has been out of control but I’m fine if I don’t see it. If I see it, I cant stop thinking about it until I buy. Perhaps that’s a bigger problem..😮 I love watching TH-cam videos so I’ll replace the hauls with videos like this as well as healthy eating and exercise. Thankyou so much for the inspiration. I’ve been using high end skincare since I was 16!! People thought that was ridiculous but here I am 45 and look decades younger than my peers. It pays off in the long run.
I wish I'd done this honestly!! No high end stuff for me til I hit 30 but at 47 I'm still pleased with my skin. I credit sunscreen and not smoking or tanning somewhat too though!
Great video! I will be doing my first low to no buy year in 2024. I don't need more clothes, household items or art supplies. I eat a simple plant-based diet with home cooked meals and rarely buy take-out. I don't buy beverages. Water is good enough and preferred. I just canceled my PO box rental. I'm sure there are more ways to cut out additional spending. My extra dollars will go toward travel and other fun experiences.
I've stopped shopping at Zara, H&M and low quality chain stores. Saving a ton and focusing on quality pieces I can have for many years instead. Much happier!
thank you, im not crazy, clothing in stores these days are more n more crap than they ever been. my mom is a taylor and she notices the same thing. its so incredibly frustrating. i try to buy from good companies that i can only really find online so i have to go clothes shopping online unfortunately, which is also frustrating. but then that makes me lean more into minimalism for a very good reason.
I really like this, I find that I cook all sorts of different foods throughout the week however I stick to 3 major cuisines...Caribbean, Italian and Korean/Chinese and the less-complicated Nigerian dishes. SO all my spices I have usually cover all these cuisines and I find myself using them A LOT and never having to buy other spices and herbs and fresh ingredients. Knowing this has helped me so much because I used to want to cook every cuisine in the world and waste so many ingredients because of it.
Great tips! I am definitely guilty of the “buying groceries for a new recipe I won’t make” dilemma! Thanks for making me mindful of that as we’ll head into 2024. One way I have been saving has been to quit paying for a gym membership and working out at home. It’s much more convenient and there are so many options out there now.
I'm with you on the alcohol. Any more, just one drink makes me feel terrible the next day, anxious and depressed. So I now abstain, and my budget thanks me.
Great video! I chunk of my monthly budget goes to my horseback riding lessons. It’s an expensive hobby, but I get SO much out of it. Worth every penny to me😍
My plan is to stop shopping for clothes for myself and instead get the two dresses on my wishlist from a thrift store this year. My money is going towards furnishing my apartment and things my babies need.
I hardly ever drank anyway but when I do my right arm aches so I don’t at all now. The issues I have is finding hobbies that keep me off the internet/social media and seeing all the stuff I need going to have to work on it

YES to not getting sucked into food blogs & recreating recipes every week! 🍲 I'm much happier now I've found a recipe book that uses the same base spices for many of the dishes, because of that simplicity my meals have become much more automatic & less stressful.
the biggest expense i cut was menstrual products!!! i invested in period undies and can’t believe how much i used to spend on feminine hygiene before them. also paper towels! we use cleaning rags for everything and im shocked more people don’t. i haven’t bought period products or disposable paper products in like 4 years and have saved so much!
Yeah! I invested in reusable pads a couple of years ago. It’S sure nice not having to buy a pack or two of supplies every month or two although it was an upfront investment. I also only used paper towels to sanitize my piano during CoVid when my students were switching…I haven’t used them since. I still have some rolls but they just sit collecting dust in my cleaning storage closet, and I might post them on a buy nothing group. I have a bunch of nice soft microfibre cloths that work great, and wash and dry well too. Little to no wear and I’ve had them years now and use them every week (different ones for counter vs floor for instance) or multiple times a week.
oh man, the thing about groceries and recipes really hits home. Recipe expenses can be completely out of control if i'm not paying attention. Our college-aged sons love to cook and they are great at budgeting--one of them suggested to me that our meal plan can just be eating the same things many days of the week. Dining out is insane now. We've taken that out. My husband and I love going out on dates, but we can cook and enjoy at home. Really good idea about the sample sized makeup when we need something specific! love that. Have been enjoying your channel very much as we navigate building up better habits and, as a result, building our savings.
Thanks for the great content in 2023! Midway through the year I quit buying books, even e-books. I now utilize the local library, where books are download for free. This also provides practice in patience as I wait for a particular book to become available. Now, I need to minimize clothing purchases (my nemesis!).
I totally agree I food shop once a week and treat myself to a lunch at a quality restaurant only once a month that way the food is better quality and not Pay full price. I shop a sale if I need a specific items like a belt for example after I damaged the thrifted leopard belt I tried before spending full price. Updating under garments on a yearly sale makes sense for quality items. No more random 4 dollar Starbucks. I buy a bag of whole bean coffee at Starbucks sale and freeze the bag to keep it fresh daily. They grind it for you. I save alot alot of money by replacing things I use daily and skip zara and h&m sales. I will thrift a trend I want to try and donate it if it doesn't work out. I save on car washes by keep the inside clean and wiped down and only go once a month. No more nail shop every 2 weeks once a month manicure pedicure. Saved alot. Now if I could just stop buying handbags I donated 5 but bought 3 more on sale but doesn't everyone need a leather coach bag? I didn't have one at all but it was half off of 495. 😊
Maybe bags are your money dial! It’s totally about spending where you see value guilt free and cutting mercilessly where you don’t. Meeting your financial needs (living, saving, investing, debts) and then allocating funds to what brings you joy! 🎉❤
I just try to get everything I really like and need second hand. From clothing to furniture... and it works! I get the best quality for almost nothing and it satisfies me so much 😂

I love coffee, but am perfectly capable of making it wonderfully for myself at home! I have 3 or so favorite types of coffee and 2 ways to brew it: cold brew (super easy) and drip into a filter cone. French press way is also easy! I just don't buy any when I'm out and save quite a lot across a month.
I am the same way. I get coffee out only when it's something special like catching up with an old friend or when traveling. I know for me, like many people, it can be tempting to grab a coffee "as a treat" in the afternoon when I'm working but I find having a selection of hot teas and coffee options on hand at the office is just as good and so cheap.
I appear to be alone, but I love wine! In moderation, of course. Otherwise, I agree wholeheartedly with the things you don't miss. I'm going to add shoes for myself. I rarely have the opportunity to wear dressy, beautiful shoes - no one sees them underneath a restaurant table. I have the smallest shoe collection in the world.
I also stopped really having drinks as well - very very occasionally I'll buy a single cooler/mixed drink at the liquor store to have at a barbecue/etc. in the summer, but I enjoy a fun soda or lemonade just as much if not more. I also love being able to drive home when the night is over!!
I spent less on specialty groceries, makeup/skin care, take out too!🙌. I spend more on taking small trips with my family, having a life coach and giving to others. Love your videos!

#1 🙌 so underrated as a budget cut/improvement, as well as lifestyle simplification! I live alone - so I eat variations of the same thing too, and then switch it up for a while when I feel like it, and I have little to no food waste while still enjoying my meals! But as for things I spend MORE money on now that I'm loving : that is BOOKS!
I am not buying anymore makeup unless I run out of something. I already know what shades work with my skin and I certainly don't need 10 versions of the same lipstick/blush/eyeshadow!!
These are such helpful ideas and the older I get the more I try to be mindful about how I spend my money. I'm pretty conservative by nature but I can easily get pulled into a "bargain" on something I really don't need. I have also stopped buying expensive skincare, manicures and luxury makeup. I spend more on travel and I do love niche fragrances so I try to be selective. I'm always fascinated by hearing what people choose to buy or not buy. Happy New Year!

I want to walk more for health and look put together, and I've been compromising on one or the other for far too long. Trying to spend less on snacks and hobbies, I have enough supplies at home and the small expenditures really build up. I would much rather spend that money somewhere else.
Agree with everything you said except for food/groceries. My husband and I are serious foodies that like a ton of variety, and we find cooking fancy meals at home save a ton of money compared to eating out at nice restaurants!
Alcohol. Don’t miss it at all. A conscious choice to quit, because it didn’t add to my quality of life. Better sleep, no anxiety and feeling terrible next day even after one drink. I don’t explain anything to anyone, just order sparkling water with lemon/lime. No judgement on people who enjoy it, because it’s such a social thing. I also significantly reduced coffee. I don’t buy it to go. Enjoy occasional cuppa with a friend at a nice coffee shop. Love your videos! Thank you!
Awesome video. I cut out wine during the week. I don’t miss it and save tons of money. But the sales on clothing were my weakness. I got a high off of “the deals.” I still love a bargain but I unsubscribed to all my trouble websites and I have been shopping my own closet. I wish I had the thousands of dollars back from all that craziness but all Incan is move forward!

I agree with this but I also feel like in my 40s I've actually worked on kinda "being" my fantasy self more...like I used to have bohemian inspired dresses I never wore because when would I? Now I swap those out for shorts and tees in the summer, and actually go out to a 70s bar with friends where the dresses work and don't seem like too much after all. So fun!
When there's a sale on clothes I've started asking myself "would I buy this if it was full price?" that's really helped me realize that I would buy clothes because they were on sale/cheap not because I actually liked the piece of clothing. As a plus size woman it's hard not to have the scarcity mindset with clothes (there's only 2 stores in all of Ottawa that carry my size), but I'm trying to change that and play with pieces in my closet.
In the summer I bought a swim pass from the city and while I initially was worried about how much it was, it has been 100% worth it. Swimming is my favourite form of exercise and I can't believe I made myself go to the gym when I absolutely hated it 😅

Swimming is great! But be careful. It's not a weight bearing exercise so won't help with bone density. It's very important for women to do some weight lifting to make our bones strong because post menopause our bones can become weak very easily

Thinking in general about what can be minimized for betterment is a great task every year. I recently got a new phone plan, reduced cable which saves me $$$ a month. I purchased less than 30 clothing items in 2023 (mostly secondhand) and have minimal beauty/skincare additions. It’s not just less money, it’s less time to manage. My time is valuable, maybe even more valuable than money.
Love this! Some things for me...
1. Subscription meal kits. This was super convenient when I worked at the office and got home late, but now that I WFH I have more time to cook from scratch since I don't have to commute, and its way cheaper.
2. Clothing for occasions I rarely go to. I used spend way too much on buying fancy dresses or skirts, when I don't really go out that much. And when I do go out I am much more comfortable in casual clothes, so I'd rather try to dress up something casual.
Where I want to spend more is jewelry, like investing in a few timeless staples. I own very little jewelry and hope it can help me add some interest to my fairly minimal wardrobe.
I find the same issue with alcohol, I was wondering if it was just me! Drinks are really expensive where I live and I don't miss cutting a $20 cocktail from my dinner bill.

I have the same. There actually is a thing called alcohol intolerance!
2 types of protein (chicken and type of seafood), 2 types of vegetables (sometimes we get creative here), 2 types of fruits, a starch (usually potatoes since we have many shelf stable options at home to go through), yogurt, and any pantry basics to refill. This is the general formula my boyfriend and I now use, and it allows us enough restrictions that we don't over purchase in a category and still allow us variety from week to week. I still find creative ways to jazz things up further with things we already have on hand.
Eating out....we always say to each other, "How much meat could we have bought with the price of this meal?" We keep our grocery budget very minimal -- meat, dairy, a tiny bit of veg. It makes life so much easier. Eating well can also help with spending on medical issues.
I also found myself quitting alcohol from one day to the next at the beginning of August. I was just fed up with it - unnecessary money and unnecessary calories. Since then, I've had alcohol twice on "special occasions" and... I wasn't particularly impressed, nor did I miss it. Never thought it would happen to me! 😂

Unlike retailers, where I agree the quality has been declining (more synthetic blends, unlined pants), you've just been getting better. I so appreciate your forthrightness. Being brave and showing up as yourself on your journey is a winning formula.

Fewer makeup and skincare products-definitely! I have found that the more junk you plaster on your face every day, the more problems you have to try to cover up later. My daily routine is nothing more than brow pencil, mascara and a dab of blush on my cheekbones and a swipe of lip gloss! The natural look. And people never think I’m as old as I am. Foundation, etc. clogs my pores and makes me break out. Then you have to cover it with more…It’s a vicious cycle.
I stopped getting my hair dyed at the salon when my first son was born. I don’t miss it AT ALL! I had myself convinced my hair was mousey or dirty dishwater-y & I HAD to get it balayaged 4x a year. Now I get compliments on my natural hair color all the time.
I’ve given up pedicures. I live in the south and wear sandals for most of the year but the price kept rising and the quality of the work diminishing. I watched a few videos and learned to give myself a pretty good one.
I have done this also. I read a book called Rescue Your Nails by Ji Baek and it helped a lot. I feel like it was a gamechanger for me and my nails have been so much nicer since.

We frequently order water with lemon as our out-to eat meal beverages & make coffee at home or the office. We often will bring lunches from home instead of ordering out Huge money saver there. 😊❤☕☕ Thanks, Christina, for these great tips.
The thing that a lot of people forget is the concept of value. Not monetary value but value to your life. Personal finance is not about not spending any money is about spending it mindfully in things that actually bring value to your life. And I think this is one of the ways we’ll beat consumerism. We’re not money making machines that live to feed even bigger machines. The world shouldn’t be a pyramid scheme.
This year will be my first attempt to a no buy/low buy year when it comes to clothes, shoes & purses. I practically purchased a whole new wardrobe over the last two years. I have the means to make these purchases, but it has become overwhelming and I really want to STOP! I want to learn to embrace what I have and become creative with styling my wardrobe pieces that I already own. Thanks for your inspiration.

Pretty much gave up drinking in 2020 and not missed it at all. Charity (thrift) shops are my mini department stores, swopped out to a budget supermarket and use every discount/loyalty scheme that I can find... this means that next year we should be able to move to a 2 bed place in the Scottish Highlands. We're 48 and all we really want to do is travel, see gigs and comedy shows and be "doing" rather than "having." Happy new year, Christina - really loved your channel this year 🎉🎉
My mother an father were so frugal. I grew up like that an at the age of 81 I am still frugal. Under these circumstances I have been able to support myself in my later years. I still will travel around town to save a dime😊 whatever you can do to save money do it. It's a challenge but we'll worth it when you see that extra $adding up.

I find fast food makes me feel terrible, I think it’s all the sodium in the food. Alcohol really affects my sleep so I don’t drink it anymore. All your tips are terrific 👍🏼
I am similar to you. I haven’t had fast food for years and don’t miss it. I feel yucky after eating it and can’t believe how I lived on fast food as a child-I was an ultra-picky eater. My alcohol tolerance is practically zero. Easy ways to save money for both of us!
Love this! One thing I cut was supplements. I realized I don’t need a vitamin/powder for everything. I still use some but have cut it down to what I feel truly works for me.

You’re so right! Unless a supplement is medically prescribed by my doctor I no longer get sucked into the hype. Therefore I only take calcium, Vitamin D and Iron.

I gave up buying lots of stuff and in turn I spent money doing home renovations myself (cheaply). I even just finished painting the entire house for $200 (exterior) whereas the interior cost me a bit more. Proud of my learning to say ‘no’ to things.
I was always taught to eat at home, meal plan, homemade freezer meals and keep it simple. New and different means clutter and overflowing. The one time I eat out is a rare weekend/ holiday or a rare social occasion.
With regards to take aways/delivery foods: some of the delivery apps offer a discount on quiet weeknights, so picking a Tuesday as your "no cook treat" day can save you more money

These are all great, I’ll add - buying coffee take out instead of making your own, not setting a food budget (I am whole food/plant based), hoarding food (over stuffed pantry), I used exercise/relaxation as stimulation (walking, hiking, reading, beach going, tub soaking) as apposed to shopping/buying items

Going plant-based saved me so much money - and I'm so much healthier for it. I have also cut back almost completely on processed/pre-packaged foods and make most of our meals at home.

I stopped buying take away coffee on my way to work. The cost has really snuck up and I can make one in a keep cup at home for a fraction of the cost.
Books. I found a great library app that has e books and audio books. It’s changed my life!
Manicures. They cost a lot of money and my nails got wrecked.
I stopped going to a fancy salon and go to Fantastic Sam’s. I found a stylist I like and am getting better cuts than at the fancy salon for a huge savings. I also color my own hair and do not get professional manicures.
I have been working a retail job since the week before Black Friday and now only have five shifts left! I wasn’t supposed to be seasonal, in fact I was the full time assistant manager, but being the one whose job it was to convince people to buy more became so heavy because of my personal preferences around spending. I also started shopping more just because the employee discount on top of clearance was so good. Turns out I’m not a retail girly. My time budget is changing from working this job to finally expressing my creativity and submitting musical compositions to publishers. That, and I’m pregnant, so I’d much rather spend money on diapers than shoes I’ll wear twice!
I do love to try out new recipes (and like the challenge of using up odds and ends of ingredients) but I have a trick for keeping my grocery budget under control. I have a large chalkboard, which a local school was throwing out, where I write down EVERY SINGLE recipe I can make with what I currently have in the house. Even obvious things like tapioca pudding, pancakes, etc. That way, I don't feel tempted to go to the store yet when I can still put together tons of breakfast options, baked goods, dinners, and sweet treats.
When I go shopping, I first write down the names of all the recipes I'm making in the coming week, with what I need to buy for each listed underneath. As soon as I get home from the store, I transfer the names of all those recipes straight to the Menu Board. So it stays up to date. This little routine helps keep me from always thinking I need to go shopping because I'm out of food!
Your list is very similar to mine. I've cut out cable tv and travel souvenirs. In 2024, I plan to reduce takeout/delivery, reduce coffee shop purchases by making it at home, stop buying smoothies and make those at home, and purchase no more than 20 pieces for my wardrobe. I'm more focused on reducing quantity, versus quality and cost. Looking forward to your content and new inspiration next year!♥
I'm with you on quitting alcohol! I've been finding the same, and have reduced my consumption to almost nothing (I've had 3 drinks in the past 8 months), and I definitely feel better all around. I'm also glad you mentioned fast fashion retailers and investing in quality and shopping second hand first. Some things I'm spending more money on are bottled salad dressings and take out 🙃 While this is not something I want to keep up long term, our family has had a busy year of building a new house while continuing to work full time and parent, so any short cuts have been worth the spend.
Most of these, I'm right there with you. Except food. We spend A LOT on food, and would gladly cut back in 100 other places before changing how we eat. And when I say we spend on food, I mean food for the house, not take out or restaurants. Food is what I live for, and it brings me a ridiculous amount of joy.
One of the biggest things I’m going to do this year is to stop watching haul videos as well as stop going to the stores. My clothes shopping has been out of control but I’m fine if I don’t see it. If I see it, I cant stop thinking about it until I buy. Perhaps that’s a bigger problem..😮 I love watching TH-cam videos so I’ll replace the hauls with videos like this as well as healthy eating and exercise. Thankyou so much for the inspiration. I’ve been using high end skincare since I was 16!! People thought that was ridiculous but here I am 45 and look decades younger than my peers. It pays off in the long run.
I wish I'd done this honestly!! No high end stuff for me til I hit 30 but at 47 I'm still pleased with my skin. I credit sunscreen and not smoking or tanning somewhat too though!
Great video! I will be doing my first low to no buy year in 2024. I don't need more clothes, household items or art supplies. I eat a simple plant-based diet with home cooked meals and rarely buy take-out. I don't buy beverages. Water is good enough and preferred. I just canceled my PO box rental. I'm sure there are more ways to cut out additional spending. My extra dollars will go toward travel and other fun experiences.
I've stopped shopping at Zara, H&M and low quality chain stores. Saving a ton and focusing on quality pieces I can have for many years instead. Much happier!
thank you, im not crazy, clothing in stores these days are more n more crap than they ever been. my mom is a taylor and she notices the same thing. its so incredibly frustrating. i try to buy from good companies that i can only really find online so i have to go clothes shopping online unfortunately, which is also frustrating. but then that makes me lean more into minimalism for a very good reason.
I really like this, I find that I cook all sorts of different foods throughout the week however I stick to 3 major cuisines...Caribbean, Italian and Korean/Chinese and the less-complicated Nigerian dishes. SO all my spices I have usually cover all these cuisines and I find myself using them A LOT and never having to buy other spices and herbs and fresh ingredients. Knowing this has helped me so much because I used to want to cook every cuisine in the world and waste so many ingredients because of it.
Great tips! I am definitely guilty of the “buying groceries for a new recipe I won’t make” dilemma! Thanks for making me mindful of that as we’ll head into 2024. One way I have been saving has been to quit paying for a gym membership and working out at home. It’s much more convenient and there are so many options out there now.
I'm with you on the alcohol. Any more, just one drink makes me feel terrible the next day, anxious and depressed. So I now abstain, and my budget thanks me.

the biggest expense i cut was menstrual products!!! i invested in period undies and can’t believe how much i used to spend on feminine hygiene before them. also paper towels! we use cleaning rags for everything and im shocked more people don’t. i haven’t bought period products or disposable paper products in like 4 years and have saved so much!
Yeah! I invested in reusable pads a couple of years ago. It’S sure nice not having to buy a pack or two of supplies every month or two although it was an upfront investment. I also only used paper towels to sanitize my piano during CoVid when my students were switching…I haven’t used them since. I still have some rolls but they just sit collecting dust in my cleaning storage closet, and I might post them on a buy nothing group. I have a bunch of nice soft microfibre cloths that work great, and wash and dry well too. Little to no wear and I’ve had them years now and use them every week (different ones for counter vs floor for instance) or multiple times a week.
Very helpful - I can relate to buying the same clothing items.
I love to spend on food and experiences so I save it for the weekend or when I’m hanging out with a friend.

oh man, the thing about groceries and recipes really hits home. Recipe expenses can be completely out of control if i'm not paying attention. Our college-aged sons love to cook and they are great at budgeting--one of them suggested to me that our meal plan can just be eating the same things many days of the week. Dining out is insane now. We've taken that out. My husband and I love going out on dates, but we can cook and enjoy at home. Really good idea about the sample sized makeup when we need something specific! love that. Have been enjoying your channel very much as we navigate building up better habits and, as a result, building our savings.
Thanks for the great content in 2023! Midway through the year I quit buying books, even e-books. I now utilize the local library, where books are download for free. This also provides practice in patience as I wait for a particular book to become available. Now, I need to minimize clothing purchases (my nemesis!).

I totally agree I food shop once a week and treat myself to a lunch at a quality restaurant only once a month that way the food is better quality and not Pay full price.
I shop a sale if I need a specific items like a belt for example after I damaged the thrifted leopard belt I tried before spending full price.
Updating under garments on a yearly sale makes sense for quality items.
No more random 4 dollar Starbucks. I buy a bag of whole bean coffee at Starbucks sale and freeze the bag to keep it fresh daily. They grind it for you.
I save alot alot of money by replacing things I use daily and skip zara and h&m sales.
I will thrift a trend I want to try and donate it if it doesn't work out.
I save on car washes by keep the inside clean and wiped down and only go once a month.
No more nail shop every 2 weeks once a month manicure pedicure. Saved alot.
Now if I could just stop buying handbags I donated 5 but bought 3 more on sale but doesn't everyone need a leather coach bag? I didn't have one at all but it was half off of 495. 😊
Maybe bags are your money dial! It’s totally about spending where you see value guilt free and cutting mercilessly where you don’t. Meeting your financial needs (living, saving, investing, debts) and then allocating funds to what brings you joy! 🎉❤

I love coffee, but am perfectly capable of making it wonderfully for myself at home! I have 3 or so favorite types of coffee and 2 ways to brew it: cold brew (super easy) and drip into a filter cone. French press way is also easy! I just don't buy any when I'm out and save quite a lot across a month.
I am the same way. I get coffee out only when it's something special like catching up with an old friend or when traveling. I know for me, like many people, it can be tempting to grab a coffee "as a treat" in the afternoon when I'm working but I find having a selection of hot teas and coffee options on hand at the office is just as good and so cheap.

I appear to be alone, but I love wine! In moderation, of course. Otherwise, I agree wholeheartedly with the things you don't miss. I'm going to add shoes for myself. I rarely have the opportunity to wear dressy, beautiful shoes - no one sees them underneath a restaurant table. I have the smallest shoe collection in the world.
I also stopped really having drinks as well - very very occasionally I'll buy a single cooler/mixed drink at the liquor store to have at a barbecue/etc. in the summer, but I enjoy a fun soda or lemonade just as much if not more. I also love being able to drive home when the night is over!!
I spent less on specialty groceries, makeup/skin care, take out too!🙌. I spend more on taking small trips with my family, having a life coach and giving to others. Love your videos!

I live alone - so I eat variations of the same thing too, and then switch it up for a while when I feel like it, and I have little to no food waste while still enjoying my meals! These are such helpful ideas and the older I get the more I try to be mindful about how I spend my money. I'm pretty conservative by nature but I can easily get pulled into a "bargain" on something I really don't need. I have also stopped buying expensive skincare, manicures and luxury makeup. I spend more on travel and I do love niche fragrances so I try to be selective. I'm always fascinated by hearing what people choose to buy or not buy. Happy New Year!

Alcohol. Don’t miss it at all. A conscious choice to quit, because it didn’t add to my quality of life. Better sleep, no anxiety and feeling terrible next day even after one drink.
I don’t explain anything to anyone, just order sparkling water with lemon/lime. No judgement on people who enjoy it, because it’s such a social thing.
I also significantly reduced coffee. I don’t buy it to go. Enjoy occasional cuppa with a friend at a nice coffee shop.

I got a high off of “the deals.” I still love a bargain but I unsubscribed to all my trouble websites and I have been shopping my own closet. I wish I had the thousands of dollars back from all that craziness but all Incan is move forward!
