In the trend of financial advice, I would love a video on, like, the hidden costs of renting. Like obviously there's rent, usually a security deposit, maybe some utilities, but what else you've found that you suddenly had to pay for. Things like insurance and security system and also, like, household things like cleaners and paper products and whatever else I'm unaware of at the moment. I feel like most advice on renting is strictly about rent and I'd be really interested in your take on the actual cost of renting your own apartment.

I actually no longer buy books! I still love to read, but I stopped buying books because 1) I have a huge TBR list, which means I have a ton of books lying around that I haven't read, 2) I don't have any space left to store them, and 3) Libby is amazing and I have realized that I really like reading digitally. I'm still a bookworm at heart, but I had to stop buying them for now. Once I get through my TBR list, I'll look at books again.

that bit about investing in quality, timeless pieces has basically been engrained in my brain since i was a kid! my mom will always go looking for things in the clearance section of department stores and buy them just because they're like under $25, but she always told me that it's way better to invest in clothes of higher quality and will never go out of style, like two decades before eco-conscious fashion became relevant. also, sewing is a handy skill to have so clothes can last even longer!
and speaking of sustainability, i recently purchased a menstrual cup and i actually like it! my parents have an aversion to things like tampons and menstrual cups (that's a whole 'nother issue), but the cost-effectiveness and reusability got me to switch over. it feels great not having to buy pads or tampons every couple months

I think it's so cool that people are starting to switch out single-use things to more sustainable alternatives - to save money but especially for the environment as well! I started using a menstrual cup a few months ago and I'm so glad I made that choice. I'm also thinking about getting a library card so I can borrow books rather than buy them all the time. And I'm really trying to use up all my cosmetics/shampoos/etc. because those are things that somehow get stockpiled so I'm not buying that for a while. I also don't buy makeup remover any more since I got a washable microfibre cloth that does the job just fine with a splash of water!

It also helped me work out that my want of a nutrabullet was actually a think I would use and would fill a gap. But I definitely hold with the nick nack thing. I will say that candles are a item that I often buy for both the smell and the container, so I have fun pot for pens or plants which is nice.

I guess one thing for me is I don’t buy food that I already have or already have something else that I could use for that meal. (LONG POST IM SORRY 😭)
I got this idea from But First, Coffee on TH-cam for meal prepping. One day, while high on my ADHD meds, I cleared out and organized my entire kitchen (just the food). I needed to get rid of expired stuff and stuff I wasn’t using. Then I organized my cupboards and fridge with those acrylic organizers and wire shelf thingies. That was everything I just had to do once, as long as I keep up my system.
Now, every payday, I take an inventory of the food I have, which actually doesn’t take long because it’s just me and also, if you do it multiple times, you start to remember what you have and what you don’t have. Like I have baking stuff, but if I know I haven’t baked for a while, my baking stuff won’t have changed. Then after taking an inventory, I sit down at my computer and think up meals I can make with the stuff I already have, then fill in the gaps at the grocery store. Like if I have meatballs and spaghetti sauce, I could meal prep spaghetti for dinner for a few nights, I’ll just need to buy some pasta and shredded cheese (I always put shredded cheese on my spaghetti lol). So I’ll have my list going on OneNote and I’ll have my grocery pickup site open and just search and add things as I go.
I swear to you, I pretty consistently pay $50 for groceries every 2 weeks just by using things I already have a little creatively and not buying doubles because I know what I have. And these are not gourmet dishes either, like I said, spaghetti is big. I made crockpot taco meat one night last week (just ground beef, salsa, and taco seasoning) and it lasted me for about 4 days. I pretty much always take a PB&J for lunch. I make it easy on myself because I know I hate cooking and if it’s not easy and good, I’m not gonna do it. I actually found I like this process too so that’s good lol.
Edit: I KNOW THIS IS HORRIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IM SORRY but I do take one day and prep things. Like putting them in plastic baggies so I can easily grab and go. That’s made packing lunches SO much easier. Even if I forget to make a sandwich for lunch, when I wake up, I can grab the rest of it and go. This has helped me either not go to the cafeteria at all or only have to go there for a main course (like if I forget to make a sandwich, I’ll go down there and get a sandwich or something, instead of getting a main course, a side, and a dessert). And I don’t have a dishwasher and I’m really depressed so doing dishes is something I’m not good at. For now, I need to be able to throw things out when I’m done instead of having to wash them (I do reuse things and try to get compostable bags though!)

I can relate to this entire video!!!!!! lol. What really helped me hone in my spending was establishing a BUDGET! Yes, about a year and a half ago I established a budget (TBM Budget by Paycheck). It really helped me change my mindset on EVERYTHING I purchase from food to textile and everything in between. I am SO guilty of buying way more organization items and stationary that I do NOT need! Like you, I like timeless clothes...and things I don't need but I like stay on the store shelves. Yes, I slip up and impulse buy on occasion but 1/2 the time I return or give in. My most guilty pleasure was buying a pop up camper...buying the pop up camper is one thing, but instead of using empty bins/totes, etc I bought all new...with that being said, I did and continue to squash the desire to add personal touches and glamour to my pop up (yes, Pinterest KILLS me!). This video was great! :)

@@bonk895 It's like the traditional shaving razor: a handle, a head that lies across it in a horizontal position, and a titanium razor blade squished between two metal pieces. I don't know if it's true, but it's also said to decrease ingrown hairs. It might seem very daunting and scary at first, but they are as safe as the women razor blades. They are also easier to clean (you can take the pieces apart), and where the women's razor blades cost like 20 euros a piece, this is just a one time investment in the metal razor itself (15 euros) and the blades (I got 5 blades for 3 euros, and they last me a long time). And: no plastic :D Good luck with your search!

I myself stopped buying batteries, candles, new books, tampons, coffee (I don’t drink that, used to buy for “people coming over”, that never come🤣)
And I came to the conclusion, I had to stop bulk buying food/shopping for 7 different meals for the whole week.. I used to waste so much food and snacks, because I didn’t finish anything before it went bad.. for this same reason I stopped buying soda/fruity drinks
So now I just buy, when everything I have is finished (except for dry goods of course)

I stopped buying things which are "in". I used to do this quiet a bit with clothes. But over the last two years or so I realized that I own more stuff than I need and therefore should declutter first and then state what I need. So for example I need curtains but until I know what I really want I'm not going to buy some. I'm looking at them when I'm at the shop to get inspiration but I won't purchase them.

Question about Vitamix, can I make pesto with it? or does it over-blend the pesto? Can I make pesto with an immersion blender...cause I have that? I just don't have a good big blender. I know this feels like I am promoting buying but I am not. If I can make a decent pesto with an immersion blender then I will but I do have a ton of herbs (esp Basil) that is just dying on the plant. I need to make food and stop buying a quick take out meal when I can't find anything in my house.
I also have been trying to just tell myself no when it comes to stationary. Which is a lot harder when your instagram and fb are filled with ads for new stationary and when you follow bujo youtubers and instagramers...I think one think I need to realize is that yes they do buy stationary but it is their job and also that a lot of it is sent to them.
I also need to switch my buying habits from a one time 'it looks awesome' to 'is this something I will use for 4-5 yrs min on clothes and at least 10 yrs on electronic'?
Another qns I ask myself when buying new stationary is what am I planning on making with said stationary. If I can't think of at least 3 uses and if I don't find myself putting the same item in the cart at least 7 times (I mean go all the way to checkout) then I won't buy it. This has been stopping a lot of the impulse buy stationary.
I also am doing wishlists and sharing with parents...so the stationary I really really want go there...that way I end up having to explain why I need said item and what I plan to do with it. So it will be a b'day or christmas gift and won't just sit on a shelf, as there is someone to ask 'oh did you make that thing you said you would'.

I no longer purchase clothes for a hypothetical size or occasion that may or may not happen. If it doesn’t fit me perfectly right now and I cannot think of an occasion to wear it in the upcoming weeks, I don’t get it.

I am trying to not purchase stationery items because I have what I use on a regular basis. It is difficult when I see other people using items, but I always look at what I have.

my worst spending habit (to this day) is buying coffee and eating out... any tips for that?

    • @zoedevine5531

I also struggle with this a lot! I think buying an insulated bottle and making your own coffee at home can help! I have no solution yet for eating out! Sometimes I’ll just go to a nearby grocery store and buy a sandwich or something cheaper instead!

it's not very hard to make your own coffee, especially with instant coffee. just get a double-walled insulated travel mug if you work or go to school. as for avoiding eating out, you're gonna have to learn some simple recipes that you can make at home. ask around if you still need help learning to cook!

What works for me on saving money on coffee or eating out is to literally spend ONLY cash - I decide how much I want to spend monthly on those two things, and then take out cash monthly and put into 4 weekly envelopes. Every time I think about buying a cup of coffee, i just have to look at the amount of cash in that envelope - really helps me decide!!

I really enjoyed the clothing talk, specially because I embarrasingly recently discovered the wonders of a ✨simple black turtleneck✨ I now have so many more outfit ideas, and I'm planning on trying to find some other basics I don't have. Either way, I think I've managed to (finally) get a sense of what my style is and what I like and don't like, and I've reached the conclusion that my favorite clothing items are the ones that make me feel either like a badass, like a cute anime girl or make me laugh (shoutout to my tie dye pomeranian crop top), so as long as i buy something on that line, I don't regret the purchase because i know I'm gonna wear it a bunch
Also, thanks for the videos, your channel is really fun and relaxing!

I stopped buying costume jewelry years ago because they always irritated my ear lobes and tarnished pretty quickly. I now probably have 5 or so staple pieces of jewelry that I rotate through all the time, and don’t even miss not having more!

I just don't "understand" air fryers.... Everyone I know was raving about them, so I bought one and used it ... I started with chicken wings, and get a MUCH better result just putting them on a cookie sheet in the oven... they get much more crispy than the air fryer and takes about the same amount of time. Someone enlighten me, please!
