I have visited Barnsley a few times. It's a lovely place to visit, certainly looks fresh and clean. I love the pavements, it feels refreshing, a mixture of old and new. Feels like a calming place. Definitely worth a visit.

Barnsley looks like it's had lots of investment, the difference between Barnsley town centre and Rotherham town centre is like chalk and cheese. Thanks for another excellent upload.

Barnsley is close to Cannon Hall Farms! I love their videos and all the doings on the farm. The animals, the grazing land, the RESTAURANT & farm shop. They show a lot of real good food.

Barnsley & Rotherham I'd ever heard of either.
Barnsley has had alot of investment & new Shopping Malls & seems to have an abundance of Retailers!
Looks like you need a few days to have a good look around Barnsley.
The massive indoor Market looks amazing & a rarity!
You don't see many indoor Markets as big as that nowadays!
What a difference from 2021 too Neil the last time you visited.
You must of been pleased with all the improvements that have been made within the year!

Barnsley is my home town and looks at least 100% better than it did before The Glassworks was completed. The group of statues, by Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson, was built to commemorate those affected by Covid. The small sculpture by the Alhambra entrance was of Billy Casper, by Graham Ibbeson, in the film Kes. Sad to see the Peel Square underground toilets have been covered over. They still had the original Victorian fittings. As you reached the top of George Yard, the Old George was formally the VERY exclusive cafe behind the international fashion house Pollyanna. Had you walked further along Hanson Street, you would have come to Mandela Gardens. Up Market Street, beyond the 'Portland stone' town hall with its fossils in the stone work and the tarn's museum, you would have reached the Cooper Art gallery and St. Mary's Church. Behind the church is the Cricket umpire Dicky Bird's statue and, across from the Barnsley Chronicle offices, one of two coal mining statues; the other, at the corner of Victoria Road and Huddersfield Road, outside of the NUM building and miners' hall. Down to the left, is Old Mill Lane. Just beyond Barnsley College, on the right, is the Quentin Blake sculpture. He did the illustrations for Roald Dahl's books.

Another great film Neil, many thanks for sharing. I'm originally from Rotherham but spent a couple of happy years in Barnsley. Friendly people. A good night out doing the pub circuit too! I left just as they had started on the markets. Definitely a big improvement although a tad too stark in places?? A couple of comments below mention this and I tend to agree. Large swathes of grey blockwork and strange little raise curbs etc. (seem like a trip hazzard to me). Definitely could do with a bit more greenery! That said, I love Barnsley and the surrounding villages and I'm definitely going to go back for a mooch around sometime. A better mix of shops large and small. How long will the latter last? Let's see. Cheers

OMG last time we went to Barnsley was about 15 years ago and i didnt think much of it, the indoor market was about the best thing there but have to say it has completely changed. Looks very clean & tidy with every shop you could need in a town centre.

Just to the left of the entrance to the Alhambra shopping centre is the Billy Casper sculpture. Modelled on local actor Dai Bradley, who played Billy, the is captured kneeling and has Kes perched on his hand. The sculptor is local man Graham Ibbeson. Graham also created the Covid memorial sculpture you see at the start of the video.

Call me a skeptic, but ... ... I think I see beyond what they are doing here. I have been to places that have 'Indoor' and an 'Outdoor' shopping areas and they really cause a divide. The mall owners (conglomerates like Norwich Union who used to own the mall in Ilford, Essex) charge, at first, low rents to get the well known larger shops to take leases, then once they become popular the rents go up. The smaller shops outside are literally 'left out in the cold'. When the rents (and I have seen all this happen over the years, by the way) get too high and leases run out, a lot of the shops close down.
Of course, at present there is a concerted effort to make town centres and cities very attractive because they are going to charge you to enter these areas under the "ULEZ" banner. I think smaller hubs of small individual shops will start to open once these charges come in, outside of these central locations. I for one simply cannot afford to pay to go to the shops.
Thanks for taking us around the area in Barnsley as I have never been there (and now not likely to go any time soon !!).

A vast concrete jungle for sure, with scant regard for greenery in the form of trees, plants, flower beds and flower boxes. Nothing individual about it or the characterless buildings....it could be any modern town anywhere in the world really. Even the Christmas tree was a triangle of modernism. Alas it’s not the sort of town I would want to visit. Too modern. Too angular. Too stark. Too many chain stores. Not much individualism anywhere. Thank you for letting us have a look at it all.
