  • In this long overdue video we take a look at Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, a prequel to Breath of the Wild that went under the radar. Was it actually any good. Let’s find out.

    I think the biggest mistake Nintendo made was marketing it as a prequel to Breath of the Wild, when really it was basically a time travel fix it fanfic where a character from the future goes back to the past to change things, only for it to result into an alternate timeline. It's a fun game and I enjoyed it a lot, but due to its marketing I went in with the expectation of it being a prequel and thus it having a not happy ending that would lead to Breath of the Wild.

      Wait, it’s not a prequel!? This comment is the EXACT reason I never got the game, I didn’t want to relive Mipha's death.

      @@setpimusneither did the developers 😅 the game averts catastrophe at the last minute so you see how she could have died but in this timeline she has more help than in the original timeline.
      I loved the game but I get that a lot of folks were disappointed that it didn't hold to the depressing backstory.

      @@setpimus now that you know, I really hope you get it and play it. Just getting to see and interact with all the cool BotW characters in all these scenarios was great. It's very cinematic, so many cutscenes. It depends everyone, I think. And it along with the Champion's ballad really raised my affection for the BotW world in a way that I didn't expect when I first played BotW. Mipha is so fun to fight as, get the game!

      It wasn't a mistake; it was a deliberate lie. Look at the sales numbers: Age of Calamity is the best-selling game in the entire Warriors franchise, entirely thanks to the hype built on the false idea that players would be getting a prequel to Breath of the Wild and not just another Warriors spin-off.

    • @Zombieworm98

      To be fair, the fact that it's not a prequel is the twist. If they said literally anything about it NOT being a sequel would spoil the game.

    Of course it was good. "What if the Breath of the Wild timeline didn't have a miserable beginning where nearly everybody was dead, but instead, advance warning allowed every big player in Hyrule, even the KING himself, personally put a stop to the evil that would have otherwise spelled doom for the kingdom?"
    A fun, cathartic second lap, as it were, laying waste to hundreds of enemies, preventing tragedy, and hoarding cooked apples. Also Zelda commits vehicular monstercide.

    I know this is an unpopular opinion, but age of calamity is better than botw, not by a ton but by a little bit, I just love how you can control the divine beasts and the champions get so much more screen time!

    ...my mother saw a Wii thingy with Zelda on the front and gave it to me for Christmas because it was Zelda.
    Shoutout to all the parents who buy stuff because a character is on the front. Btw, I was in highschool at the time, haha.

    I think it was a pretty fun game. But...I still hate that they did this time travel stuff to create a different timeline for this game to take place in. If it had legitimately been a game about the Calamity and milked that drama to fullest it would have been truly special. Could have taken advantage of the weaknesses of Botw in having its best story only seen briefly in flashbacks and made that the story of this game.
    Oh well, that didn't happen. On a technical level it was fine. There was certainly fun in playing various characters and wiping out waves of enemies. And they at least had fun in getting a bit crazy with the direction the plot went. But it's still such a shame. This could have been a game that would be remembered for a long time. Instead it was just a game that took good advantage of the Botw hype and showed the power of deceptive marketing. Glad for the video for the sake of some nostalgia since there's just no way I'd actually pick this up again.

    I wanted to like it but not a fan of the time travel stuff at all. I would not have minded at all if it was just a well told story that tells the events prior to botw faithfully. Even if we know the ending, if it was well told I would have loved it.

    I'm not a fan of the gameplay myself, but I picked it up because they marketed as the prequel story to BotW. Well, it wasn't that, it was some BS alternate timeline crap. Once I found that out, I didn't finish it and mentally berated myself because they got one over on me.

  • @VeiledArctic

    Age of calamity should've been like Xenoblade Chronicles 2's dlc, torna.
    Torna goes into the backstory of some characters, and they end incredibly tragically. You get to see and experience this tragedy and it worked perfectly

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Torna isn't the only example of that. Halo Reach, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Ys Origin, and Shadow of the Colossus are all highly acclaimed tragic prequel games. Nintendo marketed Age of Calamity as being one of these, and the fact that it wasn't was a missed opportunity and it meant that Nintendo blatantly lied about the game's premise.

    • @VeiledArctic
      @VeiledArctic 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      @@matthewmuir8884 I know there's plenty of examples, torna is just what came to mind, I just wish that age of calamity wasn't lying to its fans because I would've loved to see what actually happens to the champions

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@VeiledArctic I agree; it would've been good to see an actual prequel to Breath of the Wild like Nintendo promised. It would've been good to learn more about Hyrule's past and experience the Great Calamity, Link's last stand protecting Zelda, and Zelda fighting the Calamity Ganon and sealing it away for 100 years. I can even think of the perfect ending for it:
      "Open your eyes. Wake up, Link."

      @matthewmuir8884 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@fluffynator6222 There's a difference between hiding spoilers and lying about the game's premise; Age of Calamity's marketing was the latter, not unlike Final Fantasy 7 "Remake (actually an alternate-timeline sequel)".

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      I completely agree; the marketing was blatantly anti-consumer and the overzealous defense of the marketing was egregious. When the game released, I only criticized the marketing (not the game itself, just the marketing), and then, for two years, I received relentless bile from defenders of the game. It was a truly awful experience.

    Age of Calamity is Breath of the Wild’s story done better. Instead of it being “avenge friends who I barely remember” like in BotW, AoC is like “Got to save my friends and defeat Ganon”. And I HATE the durability system in BotW and TotK. I hated durability systems since the Giant’s Knife in Ocarina of Time 3D.
    I prefer the game that was the best selling one before BotW came around: Twilight Princess. It has everything that BotW and TotK lack like Cinnamon Noir said in his video about Twilight Princess.

    Honestly I respect Age of Calamity so much for what it did. The story was way more than I expected, but it still expanded on BotW’s past in ways that interested me. The character writing is SO much better imo, and even if it’s just because we see them more, it makes me so happy to see them utilizing the characters they set up in BotW, and the new ones are… hit or miss, but I think the good is SO good. The gameplay is a little mindless but tbh I think it’s perfectly fine, especially since we get to play as so many characters and they make them all feel so unique without making relearning them a super big chore (usually). I can see why people were disappointed, the marketing was. Bleh. but the game itself is really cool and I think deserves more love

    I love age of calamity the only thing the game had so much potential but I feel like it was lacking a lot I mean there are so many weapons play styles in breath of the wild they could have carried it over into the game they could have also expanded upon the story more with the characters from the future I mean missed opportunity not adding Paya among the ones brought back in time and I swear the customization could have gotten a lot better like impa using yiga weapons and link using champion weapons they could have had an alternate costumes or skins for the champions maybe have Zelda where outfits from the other timelines or Mipha turning into princess Ruto like I said before this game had a lot of potential but sadly it just wasn't realized

    I really would have loved to see what this developer could do if Nintendo allowed them to make it more Zelda like and less Dynasty warriors. Also, the story taking place in an alternate timeline just feels sooo safe. And I get it, if it really was a prequel, we the players could never get a positive ending.

    • @AnthonyDGreen
      @AnthonyDGreen 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not just the ending. The calamity was a pretty decisive and immediate loss for everyone. The gameplay wouldn't be like the movie 300, with heroes valiantly fighting a battle that they're fated to lose. It was more like the end of Alderaan in Star Wars where it just blows up.
      I'd be happy to hear an alternate take on how they could have given fun gameplay while sticking to the story though.

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      Except we could've gotten a positive ending in a prequel to Breath of the Wild by ending on Zelda fighting Calamity Ganon using her sealing power and sealing Ganon away for 100 years. The game could've then ended on the iconic line, "Open your eyes. Wake up, Link." That would've been a fantastic ending.

    Great video! Mostly agreed with every point and I mean it’s crazy that the hack and slash spin-off title arguably has the best character development and arguably story of the wilds era games and even when retconning a lot of botw’s lore it still had more respect for that game’s lore and story than the actual “sequel” we got
    I gotta say while yeah Astor is pretty simple, it’s honestly much more acceptable for him to be this way than like Ganondorf in totk, he’s a deranged lunatic who worships an evil god, his actions and character perfectly suit this role, it would’ve been cool to see what got him to be this way, but it’s easily inferred and not the focus of the story, whereas for Ganondorf, the origin of the blight that cyclically haunted the kingdom for untold millennia, all we get is “well he was evil just cause power and shit”, like give us something here, what drove his hatred, or lust for power, this dude has less character than the actual fucking calamity
    But yeah I absolutely loved age of calamity and I get why they chose to go the alternate universe time travel shenanigans route, even if it was kinda disingenuous marketing, it was still more accurate than calling totk a sequel lol and I can’t deny that the cutscenes where the new champions come to the rescue of the old was unbelievably hype at the time
