San Lorenzo Mini Layout | Foam Scenery

- Let's head back down to the border country for another installment of the On30 San Lorenzo Mini-Layout! This time out, I'm building some rocky desert scenery from high-density polyurethane insulation foam, then finishing it up with Sculptamold, joint compound and flat latex paint. San Lorenzo was originally an award winning diorama built by my friend, the late Verne Niner. Now I'm bringing it back as a tribute to his Estrella & Sonora Grande with this 2' x 4' On30 mini layout.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

I know its impossible for you to completely realize the impact you have on all of us. Thank you for taking the time. Your videos give me great incite towards idea on my own track. Its therapy as well to just come and relax and enjoy the video. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you
It really does help me
Keep up the work thank you again
I can see Clint Eastwood running around plotting the Rojos and the Baxters against each other on this layout!
My five year old is now watching your videos with me. This weekend we disassembled the layout I began when he was a baby so he can “build the Gruesome Gulch.” After watching today’s video, he said your mommy is going to be so proud of you. Haha. I love it! Thanks!
I 😂 really enjoyed your video as it really helps with my recovery from my brain tumor and stroke as I try to get back to my modellin
I mentioned my illness so to tell you who is watching and why thank you 😅
There's something deeply touching about executing anothers vision in such detail after they pass
Thanks for sharing your technique! I can’t wait to try this out
Another fantastic video Dave! Greetings from snowy southern New England!
Dave have you ever looked at using 20 minute joint compound instead of premixed spackle compound. You can mix as dry or wet and as much as you want. It stores indefinitely.
Excellent foam tutorial! Really looks great. Thanks for sharing!
Looking great!
Nice work Dave. I always enjoy these videos. Either name is fine 😊
Dave, another great video. I'm lovingthe evolution of the build. I look forward to your next instalment.
Interesting episode, thanks from Orlando 🐭
Ok! Super cool layout and tutorial!
Dave, this is another great video. It's great to watch the evolution of the art of Dave-Meek-desert-rocks. Early rock formations used a lot more Sculptamold. You pioneered the wire brush foam scratch + heat gun with Gruesome Gulch, and now the combination of the two with lightweight spackle perfects the technique. Also, the white foam-board backdrop effectively hides the elephant in the room. Your modeling skills are inspiring, and your video production skills are first-rate.
Thank you so much
Some great progress. I love watching you work your scenic magic Dave.
Loo incredible 😊😊😊
great work mate !!!
You are correct sir, "Arroyo de los Burros" translates to "Donkey Creek" in Spanish" looking very good too!.
Dave, I'm so happy to see you working on this and bringing Verne's vision back to life. I have a question, I assume you'll use diluted glue to hold down the grout. Would sprinkling it on the wet paint also work? I guess since you didn't there are disadvantages to that?
Awesome video as usual I always look forward to when you post!!
really good stuff I'm seeing here keep up the great work.
Great update and looking phenomenal as usual! Always enjoy it when you post new videos! I learn something from each of them.
Always interesting and informative!
Love it 😍. You always teach me and inspire me. Thank you!☺️
enjoyable and enlightening
I actually learned something from this. Just need to put it into practice.
Awesome thank you for sharing
For foam cutting, something like a Proxxon could be something up your alley there. A more stable thing with a lot of options for larger things while sturdy enough to do a lot of work
And you, probably, should have painted the fascia board for the switches before wiring them...
As I mention in the video, I have a plan for the fascia.
Hi Dave, looking good.
-Arroyo del burro- translates: Donkey's creek (just one donkey). -Arroyo del los burros- translates something like this: The creek of the donkeys (in plural, many donkeys)
Si
That switch throw looks really close to the spot where the road is going to go. Will you have enough space?
It is a little close, but I think things will work out fine.
What train set is that? I have a big HO layout in the garage, would like to do one like that in the house. Thanks 😊
It's not a train set you can buy off the shelf. All of the pieces have been assembled from various sources.
Where is this Mission actually from? Is it still there?
Verne said that the mission was based on San Xavier Del Bac near Tubac, AZ. Of course it had to be greatly compressed. The mission still stands and you can see the influences and the obvious differences: sanxaviermission.org/
@ThunderMesaStudio Thank you for sharing. It also looks similar to the one in Puerto rico. It too has a fountain in front. Both are Amazing structures.
I’m not sure how you get such working time out of sculptamold! When I’m using that stuff, I swear it goes off in about 30 seconds! I’m mixing color in with mine, just garden variety water-based acrylic paint, but I don’t think that would make it dry any faster. But I really need a good working time. I use Celluclay. It’s sort of the same thing only it takes like two days to dry! With about a one hour working time. But I really feel like with sculpture mold. I only have about 15 minutes of working time. You seem to be getting much more than that.
Maybe there's something in the water here, lol. I only make small batches at a time, usually one or two cups, so that might help. If it does start to set up too fast I sometimes will mist it with water.
This was a project for me to give positive feedback back to you hobbiest youtuber to see what effect your work has
