I'm reading this book in a classroom setting right now (I'm taking a whole course at college on Toni Morrison) and it's incredible!

I read this in February too, and still I find myself thinking about it. Definitely not an easy read, but a beautiful one, I loved her writing.

ReadingMartin I love her writing too. She has such a poetic flow that's pretty and soft and unexpectedly walls a sentence that makes it uncomfortable enough to remind you she's tell a story for as much truth as possible.

Don't forget society's responsibility for the condition of this little girl and her family.

Of course, I touched on it a bit, but it's important to think about what they did and didn't do (and how that responsibility translates to today).

I just picked this book up a couple of months ago. Along with paradise. I was excited to dive into them. But I couldn't get past the 1st three pages and they've been shelved. But I am not a quitter. I am going to start again. I am watching book reviews to get perspectives 💡Thank you!

This is a really great review! Thanks so much for sharing. The only Morrison I've read is Beloved, and it was back in high school for an AP class, but I remember it being so difficult and painful to get through because of the harsh subject matter. However, I also remember it being extremely thought provoking and well written. I'd definitely give that one a try. It's her most famous and critically acclaimed novel, I believe. The Bluest Eye has been on my to read list for a while and I'm intrigued to pick it up now after your review. :)

I'm reading this for my AP lit and comp class. I really like the structure and the plot. I never knew this was Morrison's first book OMG

I just bought this book and Beloved too by her and I've heard so many great things but I've also heard about the heavy topics she talks about. Just trying to work up that courage to pick them up. I'm sure once I do they will be great, but I also wish that I could have read them for a class and gotten a full appreciation for them

Also, could you possibly review Girl, Interrupted? I'd love to get your thoughts on that!

Great review! I've been thinking about picking this up for awhile and this review has definitely inspired me to do so sooner rather than later!

    I absolutely loved this book!
Sula, The Bluest Eye, and Song of Solomon are my favorite Morrison books.
I read The Bluest Eye as part of a class, and we discussed the purpose of the "Dick and Jane" narrative. I'm not well-versed in African-American culture, so I'm not sure if it has any specific cultural importance, but I felt like it represented disorder/madness, possibly caused by not fitting in socially. Think about it: there are specific "rules" of society--especially the one stating that you're supposed to fit a certain mold in order to be considered beautiful. Grammar has rules as well: punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, etc. When all that is taken away, a sort of incoherence can result. There's a loss of meaning, and humans can feel like they lose "meaning," or importance, when they don't fit into to societal expectations. Pretty long-winded explanation, but this just shows how much I absolutely loved this book.

Thanks for diving into that - it was, to me, the most confusing part of the novel. I knew it was there for a reason, but I couldn't really understand why. Your theory seems like a good one.

I felt the same way when i read Beloved. I was hoping that the Bluest Eye would be a smidge easier but maybe not! Nothing wrong with a challenging read though.

Lol yeah i thought the book was about Claudia at first but then you get an omniscient narrator to explain from Pecola’s perspective and you find out that’s it’s really her story. This is a story of generational trauma, the parents have issues, which in turn travels down to the children. Especially the sexual/emotional trauma Cholly experienced, he gives it to his daughter in the worst way possible. This was an interesting read because the worst scene in the book I had to re-read like “OMG is this happening? this is happening.”

I really like, that you talk slower. It gives me time to take in what you say. It's not a problem at all. It's a really good pace! Also I like your fine arguments and explanations. You booktubes also makes ME think! And that's a thousands times better, than a booktube with someone who just babbles at the speed of light. That's just empty. Best wishes from Denmarkj, Europe, Peter
