    As a Parisian, I mostly agree with your point of view.
    Except for transportation. Really convenient inside Paris. But very awful for suburbs. I can't tell how many times I had to walk because there were no trains or buses anymore at midnight. And taxis are incredibly expensive.
    And I really don't understand why so many shops are closed on Sunday. Come on ! One of the most visited place in the world !

      Oh man, that stinks that the suburbs aren't very well-served. Taxis are definitely not a cost-friendly option 😳 I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future!

    I'm reflecting after my commute in London today - London is definitely more crowded during the week/at rush hour - as all the people rush in from the outskirts of London into the city. You never see the metro as crowded as it is in London at rush hour!! Phew it was intense - I'd forgotten!!

    I lived in Paris for four years and yes! You summed up quite a lot of my same feelings as well. I'd also add bureaucracy to the dislikes and great cultural experiences at a low cost as one of the likes. Thank you so much for allowing me to revisit my Parisian life!

    I totally agree about the fashion thing! In France in general people wear more classic things, which I looooove, but when I compare it to the US, that is something that chocked me (I am a French citizen living in the US), a lot of people wear pajamas or sweatpants to class, or they wear crocks, they mix different pattern between their pants and shirts and as a French person, and I think European in general, this was something I was not used to and that I still, after 3 years, cannot get used to!

    finding products like spices or tahini is pretty easy in Paris if you know where to look. Just go to some épicier, often kept by Arabs or African immigrants, or to a Chinese supermarket. They have most you'll ever need and then some.

    • @NonStopParis
      @NonStopParis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amozmusicmaker but why is it not more mainstream?

    • @Amozmusicmaker
      @Amozmusicmaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not enough mainstream demand I suppose, or maybe other cultures are a bit less assimilated in France than in the US or the UK. I think most people enjoy various ethnics foods but wouldn't necessarily think of making them at home, and so it's only the community itself that provides it (also considering cooking is often more important among immigrant populations than the native french. And also keep in mind Paris doesn't have the same immigrants as cities in the US and the UK do; London has a very large Indian population and Indian food has made its way into British culture, whereas Paris doesn't have a big Indian population. The other way around we do have a very significant Vietnamese and north African population, and foods and spices for those cuisines can more often be found in supermarkets.

    • @Amozmusicmaker
      @Amozmusicmaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And since there's already shops held by the community itself, people buy it less easily from a supermarket if they want to. Why go to a supermarket that will provide you with few and mediocre products, when you can just walk 5 minutes to a shop that has everything you'll ever need. That would decrease demand from supermarkets even further

    regarding the indian restaurants, I would recommand going behind the Gare du Nord train station (boulevard de la chapelle). the area is not very pictureque but after a few hundred yards on Boulevard de la Chapelle you have an area peopled by the Tamul community. they have quite a few places where you can have a good meal. they sometimes look rustic but several of them are very good. There is one place at a corner of the Boulevard, particularly, that used to be a typical french café and that has been turned into an Indian restaurant (the owners didn't bother changing the decoration) I've had an excellent meal there and pretty cheap.
    also, first time I went there I noticed all these indian people drinking something in an iron tumbler. I asked what it was. the waiter said it was tea. actuallu it was Tchai, a mix of tea, cream and spices. Be sure to taste that.
    Be sure to taste the snacks

    For the metro, totally not the experience I had. First, you can't even compare the cost of Paris metro with London. London is so expensive vs. Paris. Another, the people were never rude to me. You need to approach people nicely and they will be pleasant and helpful. You want rude, try my city of New York, the rudest place on the planet. On fashion, people in Paris wear what works for their particular body types. They don't blindly follow trends, specially silly trends that don't work for everyone. I love the food, the wine the cafes in Paris. I love the fact at after work, the Parisian hang out by the Seine have wine relax and enjoy life.

    It is normal for a monthly metro pass to work only on the month you buy it, and not a month starting from the date of the purchase. Most companies actually pay half of the cost to their employees, and when they get their MONTHLY salaries, it's included.
    If you are visiting, you don't normally get the weekly or the monthly pass. You have a special metro pass for tourists and you can also get cheaper metro tickets if you buy them in 'carnets', which is 10 or 20 tickets (usually each ticket is 1.90 euros and with the 'carnet' you can get them for 1.45 each)
    Metro staff can be rude sometimes, I agree. But normally they have shitty work conditions and shitty contracts, and everyday all of the tourists ask them the same questions again and again. Put yourselves in their shoes. Wouldn't you be a little tired or angry?
    A lot of people wear black, yes. But because it is mandatory in most jobs to wear that color, and if you go from your house to work and viceversa, you end up wearing the same outfit all day long. It's the wekend when you get to wear something different than that. The fact that big fashion houses are from here, doesn't mean anything to the average person. The will never get to buy an 8000 euros bag from Chanel.

    • @backintimealwyn5736
      @backintimealwyn5736 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no it's not normal , it's ridiculous , I've been wondering about that for years and i think it's about reaping of people from more money. Paris is the most visited place in the world , it is absurd to not have a 5 or 7 day pass.

    Holidays in France are mostly Saints days. They fall on the calendar date. But the French have a principle that if a holiday falls on a Thursday, there is not much point in going back to work on a Friday. This year, fuel tanker drivers called a strike for that very reason. Just to make it official. The next one is All Saints (Toussaint) on 01Nov.Which is a Wednesday. I am stocking up for the week, just in case.

    There are no dumpsters in Paris, just regular garbage bins. Every Monday (perhaps the day changes based on where you live) people just dump on the streets odd items that are too large for a regular garbage bin. Depending on how upscale your neighborhood is or not, the pile can look like a waste dump. That being said, there are also dirty places in major US cities. Oh, I also forgot the frequent dog poop on parisian streets!

    As an almost native Parisian (even though I was born in the United States), I don't pay much attention these expat videos -- particularly since I don't need to -- but I will admit that your videos are a cut above most of the crap that is online.Nevertheless, I must disagree about the quality of Indian food in Paris. I imagine that neither of you are aware of the Little India section of Paris where I live. It starts just north of Gare du Nord and goes all the way to Place de la Chapelle (actually, it starts before then and goes on after then, but the section I mention is the heart of the area). This is actually my part of town (considered a "no-go" zone by Fox News) , and I'm sure that you would find it quite surprising from what I have seen of your videos. Some of the comments by 'locals' on this thread are a bit disturbing, but also quite predictable, considering the sort of people who click on this type of video. "Oh good, a list of things to hate:"For my own views about Paris, you can find quite a bit at Any Port in a Storm, where you are very welcome.

    I think most of the foreigners don't really get what makes parisian style so different. It's not really about the clothes we put on, but it's about the effort. I fully agreee with both of you parisian style is very classic and is basically different shades of grey and black, but what makes parisian women a bit unique is that they are always "dressed-up".
    When I lived in Sydney I had a chat with a friend, we talked about her time in Paris. She told me that although parisian style wasn't that impressive or flamboyant, parisians seemed always on their way to an important event even though they were only on their way to.... the supermarket.
    I think this is where the difference is, parisian are for most almost "overdressed". I lived in the UK and I noticed how different the same person can look either she's going to a date or to the bottle-o to grab some booze. A woman wearing high heels at the supermarket in the UK (or even in Australia) is very likely to be a business women at the end of a day of work or a women about to go party with her friend, in Paris there's almost no difference .
    Something a 50yo lady from Peterbrough told me still bugging me today, she asked me how come french women still
    Oh and I may have an explanation for the very dark parisian style . I think it's about the price, although parisian can buy cheap shirts, trousers or even underwear, we tend to spend a lot more of money for coats , so we trying to make sure it will match with the rest of our clothes, so black or grey it goes... ^^

    Ah well....
    Indian food? it seems logic to me, UK has a past of Indian colonies, so I guess immigrants from there brought their recipes with them?
    As for France, we have a past with north african colonies, black africa colonies and asian colonies... so instead of indian food, you'll find so many marvelous places with arab recipes, black and creole recipes aswell as asian recipes.
    Same goes with Germany, I think, with the turkish diaspora.
    On another topic, shops closed on sundays? well.... we aren't focused on trading and money/profit, but also on lifestyle and personal lives. Of course customers would like shops to be open all days, why not even 20 hours a day, but would this be against familly living? you open your shop on sundays... then what, you won't see your kids or familly because you are at work? We have a choice to do. Personal life or professional life?

    • @hidenname541
      @hidenname541 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats bs. Its just a tradition to close on sunday since it was established that every employed had to have at least 1 day to rest

    • @nellyishtari
      @nellyishtari 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's a tradition, from religious background... it became a rule and written in work laws.... though, it starts to change, companies want it to be voided. Of course, you can still keep a mandatory day off to allow people to rest, but...
      If, depending of the branch you work in, you are set off work on mondays, your wife/husband is off on thursdays, your familly members or friends on some other day?
      Social interraction will be just harder "oh can't come.. working!"

    A Metro story. Ticket gates on the Metro are high. You can't jump over them. Ticket dodgers wait for some unsuspecting traveller to go through and then squeeze in with them. I have a fairly fast reaction time. I had some fool by the throat before I realised he wasn't trying to mug me. As for staff, noticeable by their absence much of the time.

    Indian restaurants may be better in London than in Paris but I'm fairly sure both are still owned and operated by Indian families. Most ethnic restaurants in Paris are not operated by French natives. So, the difference in quality isn't so much a UK versus France issue, aside perhaps that the food has been adapted to local culture in the same way that Chinese American food is very different (less tasty, more sugary) than Chinese cuisine available in Paris.

    YES YES YES to your point about Parisienne style. Americans have this stereotype of Parisian style that it's so high fashion and chic, and in reality it's a lot more simple than that. Any American fashion blogger trying to put together a Parisian look would probably go for a striped shirt and tulle skirt and wedges, but in reality I see most younger women on the metro and around town wearing a black dress with sheer tights, oxfords, a coat, and a big scarf. And bedhead. Gotta have the bedhead hair.

      No more. It is particularly unfeasible in countryside, according to the work laws (you cannot afford a 7/7, 365d/yr staff if you are even a relatively small shop in an area without competitors...)
      But there are some bread-specifics laws, like the composition and making of the "tradition" bread (no additives notably), and the price on the "baguette" is deregulated since 1987 only.

    The reason Paris is so amazing is that they avoided getting bombed by the Germans.

      But are we talking about the restaurants in the Indian quarter, or just random Parisian restaurants? 'Cos I ate in a few Indian restaurants in Paris, and the ones in the Indian quarter have a much different food, more spicy and traditional.

    Complaining about the food in Paris when you come from England is frankly ridiculous. I'm a Frenchman who lives in London and I can say the food here is a million times worse and more expensive than back home in Paris.

    That's not really true, there are some places in Paris that are not beautiful, I mean the city is not like a museum it's a unique city its true but there are homeless people, poor neighborhoods like any other
