    Hi Twentyone twos
    Good question and you are also correct the Timber Framing Code states that the birdsmouth should not exceed 1/3 of the RAFTER width. Also the amount left on the Hip has to match the amount left on the rafter otherwise it will sit higher than the rafters

    I hope this is not a silly question as I love your videos.
    The rule for cutting a birds-mouth is that it should not exceed 1/3rd of the width.
    The question is: Does it only apply to common rafters?

    I was taught that the hip rafter sits up above the thickness of the roof batten to maintain the 1/3 rule and also the top and bottom roof battens are then fixed into the hip rafter (if timber of course), then the two hip battens are fixed into these

      Trent Cowie Hi Trent I have seen that done in some roofs that i have renovated however i have never done it that way my self. Every one has there one methods i guess.
      You could still use this method you would just need to mark the thickness of the batten on the Hip and treat that mark as the top of the Hip

      @@Buildsum I live and work in the UK, Middlsborough tech college. You have a unique skill and a great gift in sharing knowledge. having been taught technical drawing pencil and paper I now see the need to use sketchup is there any way I could down load your sketch up material?

      Hi David, Thanks for letting me know, it is great to hear that my videos have some use in other places as well as here in Australia. As for my SketchUp material, I do share some of my models in the 3D SketchUp Warehouse, 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/search/?q=Buildsum,
      however, there is not much there. if there is something in particular that you think you could use let me know and I will see if I still have it, unfortunately, I have lost a lot of my original drawings due to Harddrive crashes etc and only have the videos on TH-cam left.

    I've seen tradesmen cut through the birdsmouth to save time with the handsaw, and it really annoyed me 1/3 is MAX allowed for a birdsmouth
    I like the channel keep up the good work

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mate, yeah you see it all the time, I'm not sure why they all seem to use 1/3 as the standard depth and then over cut when they could just use something less and then the over cut would not matter.

    hi mate , love the videos and the way you explain stuff , is there a video explaining how to calculate the length of a broken hip with the bevels explained

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, no sorry that is one I will have to put on the to-do list. The bevels are all the same a the full-length hip

    • @michaeltomlinson9803
      @michaeltomlinson9803 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Buildsum ok great thanks, from my research to find the length of a broken hip length is it a major hip length hip less a minor hip length would this give you its length

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, Yes essentially that is it, however, depending on the length of hIp that you use to start with you may also have to make reductions for 1/2 the thickness of the centring rafter and 1/2 the mitre thickness of the valley as well.

    Doesn’t the hip end need to be notched max. 1/3rd?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aniton, No, that rule applies to rafters not Hips, the notch or Birdsmouth in the hip has to have the same amount left on so all members are on the same plane.

    Does the scribing method work for a bastard hip that's not 45 degrees

    • @Buildsum

      Hi Mate, I have never tried it but I cant see why it wouldn't work. Let me know how it goes.
