    Wow, this video was great, it totally made my day! Regarding the time travel issues with Hitler, my idea was that Thor accidentally sent Hitler forward to 1985 in the end instead of killing him, so it's the same scene as you see in the beginning of the movie, only this time with an iron eagle. So it's a time loop, and every time Kung Fury goes back in time to kill Hitler, he makes it worse. That was the idea, but I totally understand if that's not obvious. Thanks so much for the praise and taking the time to put together this video, it means a lot!

      LaserUnicorns HOLY FUCKING SHIT YOU WATCHED AND SHARED MY VIDEO!? I feel fucking honored haha. That makes total sense, I just couldn't see it in the movie. But now when I rewatch it I'll take that into account. Shameless self-plug here too: if you need any help making the next one hit me up man. I'm a film graduate who is not too bad with After Effects and stuff. But tbh I'd do anything to work on Kung Fury! Thanks so much for watching, really really appreciate it.

      Film Rant I'd love to see what would happen if a good youtube film critic (You, CinemaSins, YourMovieSucks, etc...) was involved with the editing of a movie.
      "Hi, welcome to Cinema Sins for [MOVIE]! Lets get started.... This scene contains a lapdance.... And that concludes a cinema sins movie. Score: -1 sin. Join us next time!"

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I feel honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence as CinemaSins haha. Their stuff is rad. I do aspire to be a film editor, I'm quite good at editing (the crudeness of the edits in these review videos is intentional), in Uni I was always editor on my projects. I made a short Star Wars green screen vfx film when I was in Uni called Star Wars: The Last Apprentice, if you search for it on TH-cam it should be the first result.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LaserUnicorns Yes, to me the time loop idea was obvious on my very first watch through, and i watched the movie on a phone with noise blocking headphones within minutes after it came out, i wasn't at home. People around me probably thought i was a lunatic having a seizure.
      I wonder what is necessary to make the idea more obvious to people who haven't caught it? I'm afraid the ideas will need to be a lot more readable for the feature movie release, but i'm also afraid that the insane intensity of it all would go away.

      The fight scene is clearly inspired in the kind of "Street Fighter" game that you could see in Arcades in the 80´s. I think you can even say that the film is like one of those cheap holywood movies made about a character/hero of one of those games. As if the hero "Kung Fury" had appeared first in a arcade videogame and only after he had been brought to the screen with this movie. And the funniest of that is that, in a crazy way, it gives logic to all the "apparent" nonsense.

      @@FilmRant The fight sequence was all Mortal Kombat. The splits, the ripping out of the spine, kicking heads clean off, quadruple kicks, back flips with kicks, plenty of blood and gore, and especially the linear effect of the sequence. All Mortal Kombat. Gottah love it!

      ***** Slowwwwwly stretches out his arms. My pal at work says that's his favourite part of the movie, just that one bit of the fight. There's a flip he does too where he knocks the guy over on the lading, like he jumps over a guys head and lands doing the splits and the tip of his left foot touches the guys leg and he just crumbles over. Brilliant.

      +Film Rant The continuously shooting in the dick sounds so cheesy, and it is, but's a great gag in this movie; every time it happened it became funnier and funnier. But agreed on the fight scene, I think I rewatched it at least 4-5 times in a row on my first run of the movie; somehow I also think that the pacing-break with Hitler just before was also intentionally, to represent the short introduction animation of a new level in an 80s videogame (and contrast at the same time). My single complaint would be the Thor introduction as well, it felt like a Godzilla/Powerrangers-gag, but somehow still under delivered ...

    I believe the references during the fighting Nazi scene wasn't a based on a contemporary or modern movie. I think it is more likely that it is a reference to 80's 2D video fighting games. In those games they always had NPC's milling about in the background just as this one does. Also a BIG thank you for playing the entire fight scene w/o commentary so people can see just how awesome it is.

    one of my favorite moments was when Tricerocop was shooting nazis in their junk, so one nazi covered his crotch with his hands to avoid getting shot there. Triceracop shot his left arm out of the way, then his right arm, then shot his crotch, and then the nazi got eaten by a t. rex. i had to rewind to show my friend what had happened because it was so quick.
    i appreciate that despite the craziness the film had a solid moral and character building for the lead, with the lesson that even the greatest can need help and that impossible odds can be surpassed if people stand united. unless you’re a nazi. then you’re screwed.

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I'm not sure i can agree with you with regard to pacing. I mean, the pacing is obviously very haphazard, but i think it comes with the mission and the format, and i can't see it being done any better. There are sections which are very reference and pun dense, and i doubt could be any different lest they lose their impact, so i truly appreciate the slower moments, they allow the consumed to seep in a bit. Without them, my mind would overload and explode, or more realistically just blank out for a while, because i know this movie is reference heavy, so i need to tie those things together in my mind while watching. It's a challenging production to consume.
    The moment without music when Fury crashes a tank into the bunker and enters is a great buildup to the beat-em-up scene. I think the silent part where thor and crew teleport themselves in where the music starts with "Kill them!" also works well for suspense. It can't just be loud all the time, or the loud sections would cease to have an impact.
    If i can draw a parallel, i think these ups and downs are important, but American moviemaking culture seems to neglect them. You notice some 80ies/early 90ies dubs of Anime would replace the music and make it play throughout and cut down the slower sections. You will notice movies by European directors being cut denser for US release. Of course David is not beyond criticism, as i believe some major points need to be spelled out better for part of the audience, but there's so much that this short movie gets right that gets neglected these days, which truly makes it a standout artistic piece in line with canonically great movies. Merely throwing together all the pieces of "awesome" could just as well result in a catastrophe that this isn't.

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Siana Gearz You raise some very valid points. With pacing, it's not the slow parts I was criticising, it's how KF transitions between them, just some of it I think is a little jarring, but it's still brilliant to watch.
      Maybe the music thing is just personal preference for me? I agree it doesn't need to be loud all the time, but I'm a fan of leitmotifs, so would have loved some badass music when Thor appeared.
      Thoroughly agree with that third paragraph. Yeah, KF is just a movie by some Swedish guy and some talented skeleton crew, but it's just as entertaining and well created as any major blockbuster. Your point about "throwing together all the pieces of awesome could just as well result in a catastrophe" just makes me think of Jurassic World. You're right, Kung Fury gets so much right, and it really deserves a bigger place in the major films scene.

    I don't know if anyone has addressed this, but the reason for the synch issues with some of the actors speaking (mainly Thor and Katana), if you notice the credits, there's a credit for Thor (the actor), and also Thor's voice actor is credited beneath. The same goes Katana. And te reason for it, I believe, is a nod/homage to old Chinese kung fu movies that were dubbed in English, but were completely off, being that they were in a different language.

    It would hit 80s action movies on the head if in the feature film they use those ugly monster costumes that look super rubbery. Like the ninja turtle costumes or the monsters in the super mario brothers movie.

    Fight scene was def Mortal Kombat, especially when he gets to the last guy in "passive stance" and does a finishing move on him. That spine rip is staright from MK

    I noticed the lip synch go off in a few scenes. I believe it's intentional because if you ever remember watching your VHS tape screw up and go fuzzy on TV, sometimes the lip synch didn't go with the AUDIO!! I can also relate to some dubbed shows in the 90s and the EDITING WAS LAZY that the lips would NOT even go with the voice actors/audio!! Now imagine if Western films were TRANSLATED/EDITED so that SWEDEN fans could view? Even worse!
    Another film that comes to mind that parodies this is KUNG POW ENTER THE FIST. Also the TV show KUNG FAUX(used to love watching this as a highschooler!)

    That epic linear fight scene immediately made me think of an old game called "Viewtiful Joe" on the PS2. I wouldn't be surprised if it inspired that scene. It right away put me in mind of an old school side scrolling beat 'em up.

      also the use of layers, as in one basic side-scrolling character foreground against a moving flat background, feels like any old beat 'em up.

    this review was awesome, as a graduate of 3d animation and sfx i know the crazy crazy amount of work that went it into this. and it boggles my mind, it truly is just ridiculously amazing; and it annoys when people hate on it.Im like if you truly understood the effort you would praise its glories like you have :D

    I think the fight deserves a shout out for one more thing than you mentioned. There are only 3 cuts in the entire thing. And contrary to modern "fight scenes" I totally believe they are just different angle shots of the same fight to show cool stuff, rather than cuts to make the actor look like a competent fighter.

    17:31 is golden 1. for glorifying the headbutt as intimidating as fuck in a fight, highlighting by the literal intimidation of the following opponent, and 2. the baddies in the background just milling around like the old games

    The fighting scene is not a homage to Oldboy, but to the 2D sprite fighting arcade games with the moving characters in the backgorund...Even when he took hi spine was direct reference to Mortal Kobat, the move was a FATALITY...

    The fight scene that ends at about 19:00 is... ALMOST perfect. But one major thing went wrong. It would have been an easy fix in post, too.
    Good guys ALWAYS go Left to Right. It's a thing in Movies(The good guy was framed facing to the right almost always, where the bad guys were to the left), it's a thing in beat-em-up games, which this scene is trying to recreate, so this missing detail is... a problem.

    My opinion is that the other reason the Nazi fight scene was on a one dimensional fight stage was to mimic 80s fighting videogames (he wonders about this @ 20:20). What film, other than Oldboy, did he say he thought that scene was inspired by @ 19:12?

    19:20 - this was based on several Games, especially Mortal Kombat since a lot of signature moves were taken from the game, including Sub-Zero's fatality with extracting head along with a spine (which had been influenced by "Predator" beforehand)

  • @Gwalchgwyn
    @Gwalchgwyn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I felt that the flat effect of the 'Old Boy' scene was reminiscent of eighties coin-op side-scrolling button-mashing beat-'em-ups. The characters in the background appear to be a nod to repetitive crowd animations and graphics seen in video games, even today, but could also be a reference to the seemingly ineffectual/random actions of extras in crowded movie scenes in general.
    Fair analysis, though. Choosing to consider all mistakes absolutely intentional, therefore utterly genius. :)

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WhiteHawkUK Yeah I'd agree that probably is what Sandberg was going for. But for certain cinephiles that Oldboy fight scene is very iconic. I'm very much into games too, but I think old arcade beat-em-up sidescrollers are a little before my time. I like retro games, but I absolutely SUCK at beat-em-ups so I usually avoid them.
