I have arachnophobia (if I see an arachnid IRL) and I believe I remember watching Peter say that he also did in a previous Sci Show Talk Show. I think that's awesome and very brave of him to hold Fluffy like that (and stay in the same room without screaming/crying/fainting/anything else). I probably would not have been able to do so.
I love spider, they are truly fascinating, and also have really cute face, if you look close enough Please tell me I am not the only person who thinks like this
Peter winkler is a vampire, For one he is very covered up clothing wise from the beanie to the double shirt including a long sleeve (sounds like someones hiding from the sun) to the two bite holes on his neck you can see at 7:13 and lastly the fangs you can clearly see after he rejoices in response to holding to spider at 11:07. To many signs add up be careful Hank.
Please do not be racist, being a vampire is hard enough without the persecution. Also he can make explosions at will as seen near the end of the video. So being mean to him would probably not be wise.
Isn't Peter Arachnophobic? Why do you do this to him, like, He's your editor, you need him hahah. However, That massive enthusiasm when he held Fluffy, was pretty awesome.
Yeah - I noticed that they had the guy with arachnophobia on for both arachnids so far... Makes me wonder if he's trying to overcome his fear and they're helping by letting him face it in a controlled environment.
david4dervy He would (in his own words) probably never get the chance to hold a spider like that again. Even if you are deathly afraid of deep water, the inner scientist within you would be begging you to go on that one submarine to the sea floor.Simply because if you don't do it then, you will never get another chance.
Makes me sad you guys didn't mention some of the cooler parts of tarantulas of various kinds. For example, some species actually rub their abdomens and expel their "hair" into the air as an irritant to mammals and other than get the hairs in their eyes and noses. Also, spiders move not with muscles, but by increasing and decreasing the blood pressure in their legs. It's awesome.
I wish my pet tarantula was that laid back. She's twice the size of Fluffy, easily agitated, and has one inch long fangs and enough strength to bite through fingernails.
"Soul" is a BIOLOGICAL concept, which was stolen by the mystics, to turn it into anything (which is their sole purpose in mind and matter). The term "animal" is derived from the Latin term "anima" which means breath, and "anima" is translated "soul" in English. A mule is an animal; which is a thing with an "anima" (a soul). What is a mule, unlike other animals, - a hybrid of a jack (male donkey) and a mare (female horse), equine family - is its soul. Therefore: a mule has a soul!! But wait, since the mule is a sterile hybrid, you could say that has a soul of two halves; good job choosing a hybrid animal to make the matter more complicated (HAHAHA).
Spiders are my favourite Arthropods! I live in Melbourne Australia, we don't get any mega dangerous ones (red backs, for example) here, but loads of common brown house spiders and daddy long legs! I just love feeding the ones who claim a window corner the blowflies which bother me ('feed' them by catching fly in a glass and 'tossing' the fly into the web). Fluffy looks amazing and Jessi was, as ever, sweet, entertaining and informative on a simple level! Lovely Episode!
You sort of got it right with sinkholes, I live in Florida and have grown up here. Limestone is calcium carbonate and when water flows across it it does erode it but the main thing that eats away at it is the carbon dioxide dissolved in the water which acts as an acid. Now how sinkholes form is due to the water table. When the water table is high it helps support the land and limestone above it but once it drains away that support is gone causing weaker sections to collapse.
Sound is a compression wave that is picked up by the eardrums, much like Light. Even if we're blind, there is still light, such as even if we are deaf, sound still exists. If there's no one to hear it, it still makes a sound.
Hey John and everybody that is involved in this! Thank you so much for making those videos! I love them! The guest animals are great! So far I liked the porcupine best, the sounds were super funny! I'm going to send the link of this one to my best friend, she likes spiders a LOT. She owns several tarantulas (little ones). The show is very interesting so please don't stop making it! Hugs from Germany! Have a nice day =)
AAAH Winkler! hey guys, Louisiana resident and grandson of Louisiana geologist here. The sinkhole in Bayou Corne is not a "frack out" or some such, but a collapsed gas storage cavern that was carved by a Texas company--Texas Brine, Inc. Gas, oil, etc are stored in naturally-forming salt domes. Salt domes are awesome formations that rise from geologic pressures to form big mushroom-like formations under the earth, check them out!
One more way for sinkholes to form (the most common where I live) is for areas with granular stone like sandstone, to be a near a water source that's dried up. So when the water that had been between the grains is no longer there, that area collapses since it can't hold up the ground above it anymore. (That's going on all around the Dead Sea currently)
4:10 correction: the DARPA mule is gas-powered, not electric. From Boston Robotics' video description: "This lab prototype is powered remotely. AlphaDog will draw power from an internal combustion engine, which we designed to be 10x quieter than BigDog. The field version of AlphaDog will have a sensor head packed with terrain sensors." The system uses a combustion engine to power compressors that provide the pressure to move its appendage actuators.
Live in New Orleans - agree about the 100 years. Btw, the sinkhole (80 miles from New Orleans) has explosive gasses, is probably somewhat radioactive, and is growing (now the size of the Superdome)
Hank, I remember when that dealership got swallowed up in the sinkhole. That happened when I was a kid in Orlando, too. I remember seeing the sinkhole behind the park/playground there in Winter Park.
I wish they would have talked more about what a tarantula's defenses are. It's really cool! They release a bunch of the hairs from their exoskeleton, which are an irritant, leaving the poor creature who tried to eat them with a very itchy mouth!
A sinkhole just happened in Chicago... 3 cars fell in, 2 were parked and one was being driven. The driver of the car went to the hospital, luckily without any life threatening injuries...
(3:29) Why in gods name would we build a soulless automaton that has no feeling or concerns... THEN ON TOP OF THAT GIVE IT THE ABILITY TO KILL!? ...DARPA is secretly Skynet!!!!
As one with experience as a shipping clerk, I can tell you a warehouse environment is really fun and as long as one doesn't work for Amazon it can be a fine job for a human to have. I would like to vote it doesn't go in to automation soon.
yes if it falls and no one is around to hear it there will be sound in the form of a pressure wave which vibrates your eardrum and your brain interprets it as sound
i like how they were like of you’re a guy who’s terrified of arachnids like tarantulas and scorpions well lemme surprise you with tarantulas and scorpions
I wonder if anyone would miss me if a huge sinkhole opened up beneath me. I live in a suburb of New Orleans, after all. Death by sink hole might be my destiny. I hadn't realized in how much danger my home is in from the sinkhole menace, until I saw this show. Thanks so much Peter and Hank. Now I have something else to live in fear of!
Regarding sink holes Washington and Oregon have limestone in the coast range but trees roots are able to grow through the cracks in the lime stone and make the ground more stable so sink holes don't occur
Good for Peter. Seemed like he didn't want to do it, but he realized he had to seize the opportunity he'd never get again. My hat goes off to you Peter, because I would never have touched her.
It seems to me that it wouldn't be too difficult to go round local universities and find science department members who would be willing to talk about something awesome that they are properly experts in rather than stuff that staffers are kinda pretty interested in.This is why Animal Wonders is the best segment, because you have somebody whose life revolves around this explaining it.
according to the wiki on "Big Dog" it runs on a two-stroke, one-cylinder engine that runs hydraulics through actuators and it has been around for at least four years
you missed liquefaction which is where water or some other substance separates the dirt/sand grains and causes it to give way. This can happen one of many ways one is earthquakes causing vibration, separation, and collapse. The other is a sudden rush of a fluid acting substance as said before it is not required to be water it just has to separate the grains enough for there to be a loss of stability and support ability.
Fun fact: In some species of tarantulas, if they feel threatened by something, they'll flick their hairs at it as a warning. It doesn't hurt too bad, but it causes a rash and ichyness that can last for a day or two. The More You Know
The one in my classroom is named Rose, and she shed her skin at the beginning of the year. The "fluff" isn't soft, but the feet are. She doesn't spin a web, though. Maybe we haven't given her the right kind of environment to build on.
The one and only time I ever held a tarantula it took all of my willpower not to recoil my hand lightning fast or shake the thing off. It's a weird sensation to say the least, but I probably wouldn't do it ever again.
My friend had one of these, along with a pink-toed tarantula, and they were really tame and nice and actually kinda cute. (they're slowly helping with my arachnophobia) She used to drive around with them and take them to parks to teach kids about them. They're pretty neat. c:
I love Peter's triumphant, "Yeah!" when Fluffy leaves his hand.
Me too, enlightened my day.
Jessi seems to be such a caring person, the way she interacts with the animals. Thats adorable.
"Do Mules have Souls?"
Anything capable of the emotion of *Love* has a soul.
I have yet to meet a high order mammal that was not capable of love.
9:56
They film a bunch of them at once.
Not surprised, but I had no idea before I heard this adorable background noise of Kemosabe.
This is the first time I haven't been creeped out by a spider! I just thought it was cute, and thats progress coming from me :)
I have arachnophobia (if I see an arachnid IRL) and I believe I remember watching Peter say that he also did in a previous Sci Show Talk Show. Nope, I sometimes think like that. Though I'd think the tiny jumping spiders are even cuter.
whats everyones obsession with tiny jumping spiders?
Tiny things are cuter than bigger things? I think that's the safe assumption here.
Miles Siegfield They are cute... until they eat your face off
they dont do that :-) although the still may inject venom strong enough into you which can cause paralysis or even death.
I love how Hank thanks all the animals politely and with respect regardless X3
Mule's do technically have souls. Like gingers, they steal them from their parents.
As a ginger myself I can assure you we have no soul...
Greater98er I know, you have your parents (or another suitable host's) soul, like I said.
"Graphics, GO!! Heh, nothing happened.." He is so funny xD
yes they do have souls, JUST LOOK AT THEIR ADORABLE FACES!!!!
I love Peter's triumphant "YEAH!" when she takes the spider back.
I like how Jessi is so invested in everything she bribgs in. Like she's kind of in love eith each and every one of these cool creatures :)
i would faint at the mere sight of that tarantula i have what you call arachnaphobia
what about jumping spiders they are so cute
yeah no if i see a spider like that i would probably be the first human to make a photonic boom with only my legs XD
but their eyes are so cute
can't say that i think the same way as you.
they are all like uguu im an anime spider
"thank you for making the graphics"
BOOOOM!

all my tarantulas are arsey little arachnids too.
Only tarantula keepers would use "little" to describe our pets. Especially the face sized ones.
Graham Hunt ....how do you know that she can bite through- never mind, I don't want to know.
she says everything so sweetly. like, oh, it's going to suck up its insides like a slurpee... and it still sounds sweet

Joel HC soul is a mystical concept for which there is no evidence.
For some reason, out of all your show, I like this one best.
Please make episodes more often.
As a severe arachnophobe, I ask myself, why did I click on this video...
Cheesus I bet you sit when you piss.
+Jordan E you're actually right! 3 guesses as to why?
+Jordan E tbh I'm more of a man than you by the sound of it so I'd stick with your original rebuttal 😉

Seriously I love Jessi from Animal Wonders. She is so excited about animals and is so cute!

I'm glad Peter came out of his shell to do it huge was so happy when he did it
This guy needs to be in more videos. He's awesome.
Peter is adorable..I'd be shaking like a leaf too---I really like that outlook on life
"Well, I probably should, i'll never have this chance again."
I love this guy that is with hank for this talk!

Congrats Pete for holding that despite your fear, considering how you freaked at the King Scorpion I didn't think you'd manage a spider. Well met sir.
I used to own a Chilean Rose Hair. She was beautiful. You guys need to bring some more exotic animals on the show.

The sink hole section was really interesting! My Edible Wild Foods class was just talking about them here in southern Indiana!
this is like my favourite program ever.
They have the best faces in this episode! Thank you, Fluffy, for giving me a laugh

Hey Hank, you should do a show on the behavioral theory of phobias.
This is an excellent example of extinguishing a classically conditioned response
Hank, I remember when that dealership got swallowed up in the sinkhole. That happened when I was a kid in Orlando, too. I remember seeing the sinkhole behind the park/playground there in Winter Park.
So much respect for Peter right now
Mule perked out with a whole bunch of nerf guns. Ultimate baby sitter. Id pay it to watch my kids.
I really enjoy the chap you have as a guest star.

'Humanoid robot with lethal force' SO ROBOCOP! Basically what you just told me is Robocop is gonna happen
yes if it falls and no one is around to hear it there will be sound in the form of a pressure wave which vibrates your eardrum and your brain interprets it as sound
These are always awesome!! keep up the good work guys!
She's probably been fed recently enough that she's metabolising her meal and not hungry. Plus, most spiders spend most of the day 'just chilling'.
Jessie was awesome. I love her scientific terms. "Goodie stuff that makes her alive"
I make a deep bow to Peter. Overcoming your fear is a big thing. Applause!
i like how they were like of you’re a guy who’s terrified of arachnids like tarantulas and scorpions well lemme surprise you with tarantulas and scorpions
I've seen those robots in person! They're awesome.

At first I was wishing it was Henry Winkler, but Pete... you did not disappoint!
Noticed that too, but don't see the graphics he can do much anywhere else. And he held the spider.
i'm reminded of a proverb "killing is easy, living is the hard part"

The talkshow is pretty rad :) All it needs is a little background music so it doesn't get too silent
according to the wiki on "Big Dog" it runs on a two-stroke, one-cylinder engine that runs hydraulics through actuators and it has been around for at least four years
From NOLA, we love you too! Thanks for helping me get smarter. I'll be tuning in untill Louisiana sinks.

Always wonder who done the graphic! Already fell in love with his work lol
I am really proud of Peter, that has great!
I really enjoy these shows.
The robot mules are called 'Big Dog' from Boston dynamics if anyone wants to check it out.
Fun fact: In some species of tarantulas, if they feel threatened by something, they'll flick their hairs at it as a warning. It doesn't hurt too bad, but it causes a rash and ichyness that can last for a day or two.
The More You Know
I like Jessi. She brings in cool animals, and always has a smile on her face/
You simultaneously have both top comments. congratulations.
Way to go Peter! I'm fine with Tarantulas three feet away from me but holding one would be tough. And I'd be afraid of moving suddenly and hurting it.
Love this channel !
Fluffy and Jessi helped a lot!
The 17 year periodical cicadas are coming out this year in the northeast. You should do a scishow about that!
The project has advanced since, they are using an electric engine now and adding new equipment like high range radars and things like that.
Wow, this show is full cute things. Hank, cute. His graphic designer, cute. The girl, cute. The spider, cute. This is a super cute video. :)
i think he wanted a video about it, because it makes the subject much more fun
I live in the New Orleans area.. happy for the props, scared to death now by me dying 😂
Funny, I'm the exact opposite! I had a pet tarantula as a kid, and I think they're just the cutest things.
These are my FAVORITE
you are so freaking brave to hold Fluffy
The one in my classroom is named Rose, and she shed her skin at the beginning of the year. The "fluff" isn't soft, but the feet are. She doesn't spin a web, though. Maybe we haven't given her the right kind of environment to build on.
Am I the only one who wants to hang out with these guys and talk about science?
I think my argument would be that sound is the wave itself, HEARING is our perception of it. Sound can exist without being heard.
The one and only time I ever held a tarantula it took all of my willpower not to recoil my hand lightning fast or shake the thing off. It's a weird sensation to say the least, but I probably wouldn't do it ever again.
Do you think you could do a SciShow about the cicada brood II that's supposed to happen this year?
Mules have beautiful souls
Obviously the Sergeant robot has to shout at the Private robot, "WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION, SOLDIER?!"
Spiders are BEAUTIFUL. I'm also terrified and can't look at them in the eyes.
My friend had one of these, along with a pink-toed tarantula, and they were really tame and nice and actually kinda cute. (they're slowly helping with my arachnophobia) She used to drive around with them and take them to parks to teach kids about them. They're pretty neat. c:
I lost it at "She thinks you're the ground."
